POLLITZER, M.D. Division of Epidemiology, World Health Organization Manuscript received in April 1952 RODENTS AND LAGOMORPHA Reviewing in 1928 the then rather limited knowledge available concerning the occurrence and importance of plague in rodents other than the common rats and mice, Jorge 129 felt justified in drawing a clear-cut distinction between the pandemic type of plague introduced into human settlements and houses all over the world by the " domestic " rats and mice, and " peste selvatique ", which is dangerous for man only when he invades the remote endemic foci populated by wild rodents. Although Jorge's concept was accepted, some discussion arose regarding the appropriateness of the term " peste selvatique" or, as Stallybrass 282 and Wu Lien-teh 318 translated it, " selvatic plague ". It was pointed out by Meyer 194 that, on etymological grounds, the name " sylvatic plague " would be preferable, and this term was widely used until POzzO 238 and Hoekenga 105 doubted, and Girard 82 denied, its adequacy on the grounds that the word " sylvatic" implied that the rodents concerned lived in forests, whereas that was rarely the case. Girard therefore advocated the reversion to the expression "wild-rodent plague" which was used before the publication of Jorge's study-a proposal it has seemed advisable to accept for the present studies. Much more important than the difficulty of adopting an adequate nomenclature is that of distinguishing between rat and wild-rodent plague- a distinction which is no longer as clear-cut as Jorge was entitled to assume. -

Utilising a family-run hotel on the outskirts of the ancient city of Arles as our base, the itinerary provided an easy opportunity to look for flamingoes, herons and wading birds using the shallow waters and reed-fringed lagoons as a breeding area or a suitable stop-over for migrants. The mountainous areas attract different and more localized species and we located special birds such as Wallcreeper, Rock Sparrow and Booted Eagle, together with a selection of other stunning species that call the Camargue home. Day 1 Monday 19th November Arriving in the early evening, leaders Neil and Matt met 15 of the 16 clients at Marseille airport, before collecting the minibuses and beginning the journey to the hotel. French protests and road blocks meant the route was more cross country but after just over an hour or so we arrived at our destination, Hotel des Granges. We were greeted by Bruno and Marie-Jo, our wonderful hosts and owners of this classically French Hotel, and a lone Black Redstart, the first bird for our trip, sat roosting over the entrance porch. -
Hungary & Transylvania
Although we had many exciting birds, the ‘Bird of the trip’ was Wallcreeper in 2015. (János Oláh) HUNGARY & TRANSYLVANIA 14 – 23 MAY 2015 LEADER: JÁNOS OLÁH Central and Eastern Europe has a great variety of bird species including lots of special ones but at the same time also offers a fantastic variety of different habitats and scenery as well as the long and exciting history of the area. Birdquest has operated tours to Hungary since 1991, being one of the few pioneers to enter the eastern block. The tour itinerary has been changed a few times but nowadays the combination of Hungary and Transylvania seems to be a settled and well established one and offers an amazing list of European birds. This tour is a very good introduction to birders visiting Europe for the first time but also offers some difficult-to-see birds for those who birded the continent before. We had several tour highlights on this recent tour but certainly the displaying Great Bustards, a majestic pair of Eastern Imperial Eagle, the mighty Saker, the handsome Red-footed Falcon, a hunting Peregrine, the shy Capercaillie, the elusive Little Crake and Corncrake, the enigmatic Ural Owl, the declining White-backed Woodpecker, the skulking River and Barred Warblers, a rare Sombre Tit, which was a write-in, the fluty Red-breasted and Collared Flycatchers and the stunning Wallcreeper will be long remembered. We recorded a total of 214 species on this short tour, which is a respectable tally for Europe. Amongst these we had 18 species of raptors, 6 species of owls, 9 species of woodpeckers and 15 species of warblers seen! Our mammal highlight was undoubtedly the superb views of Carpathian Brown Bears of which we saw ten on a single afternoon! 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Hungary & Transylvania 2015 www.birdquest-tours.com We also had a nice overview of the different habitats of a Carpathian transect from the Great Hungarian Plain through the deciduous woodlands of the Carpathian foothills to the higher conifer-covered mountains. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. Chapter 1 PHYLOGEOGRAPHY OF FINCHES AND SPARROWS Antonio Arnaiz-Villena*, Pablo Gomez-Prieto and Valentin Ruiz-del-Valle Department of Immunology, University Complutense, The Madrid Regional Blood Center, Madrid, Spain. ABSTRACT Fringillidae finches form a subfamily of songbirds (Passeriformes), which are presently distributed around the world. This subfamily includes canaries, goldfinches, greenfinches, rosefinches, and grosbeaks, among others. Molecular phylogenies obtained with mitochondrial DNA sequences show that these groups of finches are put together, but with some polytomies that have apparently evolved or radiated in parallel. The time of appearance on Earth of all studied groups is suggested to start after Middle Miocene Epoch, around 10 million years ago. Greenfinches (genus Carduelis) may have originated at Eurasian desert margins coming from Rhodopechys obsoleta (dessert finch) or an extinct pale plumage ancestor; it later acquired green plumage suitable for the greenfinch ecological niche, i.e.: woods. Multicolored Eurasian goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) has a genetic extant ancestor, the green-feathered Carduelis citrinella (citril finch); this was thought to be a canary on phonotypical bases, but it is now included within goldfinches by our molecular genetics phylograms. Speciation events between citril finch and Eurasian goldfinch are related with the Mediterranean Messinian salinity crisis (5 million years ago). Linurgus olivaceus (oriole finch) is presently thriving in Equatorial Africa and was included in a separate genus (Linurgus) by itself on phenotypical bases. Our phylograms demonstrate that it is and old canary. Proposed genus Acanthis does not exist. Twite and linnet form a separate radiation from redpolls. -

The work is based on the materials of our surveys of rodents and insectivo- rous mammals conducted in Mordovia using both trap lines and pitfall arrays using traditional methods. THE BUG RIVER VALLEY FOR NATURE LOVERS Eastern Poland with a difference By Olivier Dochy, Belgium From 21st until 25th of June, I got the chance to join a study visit to the valley of the Bug river on the border of Poland and Belarus, in the far east of Poland. The purpose of this visit was tot evaluate local initiatives for sustainable tourism, oriented to "riverside & country- side" tourism. This visit was organized by a Flemish-Polish exchange project with the prov- inces of West-Vlaanderen en Lubelski (Poland), but also the flemish initiative vzw De Boot (www.deboot.be). My task was to evaluate which topics in the region could be interesting for nature-lovers in general and keen nature-specialists in particular, such as birders. Well, there is a lot ! It is not like the wild expanses of the well-known Biebrza valley or the untouched forests of Bia- lowieza, but rather a small-scale (agri)cultural landscape. But it still has all the biodiversity that once flourished in Western-Europe and now all (but) disappeared. Here follow a number of tips voor those who want to visit the region. There is a lot of in- formation great and small on the internet about the region, but you have to surf a lot to find it all. Anyway, there certainly is a lot to discover for naturalists with a pioneer drive ! Johnsgard (1986) synthesised available data, came up with similar groupings of taxa, and produced a dendrogram indicating that turkeys (Meleagridinae) were the most primitive (outside Cracidae and Megapodiidae), with grouse (Tetraoninae), guineafowl (Numidinae), New World quails (Odontophorinae) and pheasants and kin (Phasianinae) successively more derived. Genetic evidence (DNA-hybridisation data) provided by Sibley & Ahlquist (1990) suggested Odontophorinae were the most basal phasianoids and guineafowl the next most basal group. A basal position of the New World quails among phasianoids has been supported by other genetic data (Kimball et al. 1999, Armstrong et al. 2001). A recent analysis based on morphological characters (Dyke et al. 2003) found support for megapodes as the most basal group in the order, then Cracidae, then Phasianidoidea, and within the latter, Numididae the most basal group. In contrast to the above genetic-based analyses, Dyke et al. (2003) found the Odontophorinae to be the most derived group within the order. A recent analysis using both mitochondrial ND2 and cytochrome-b DNA sequences, however, reinforces the basal position of the Odontophorinae (Pereira & Baker 2006). Here we follow a consensus of the above works and place Odontophorinae basal in the phasianids. Worthy & Holdaway (2002) considered that Cheeseman’s (1891) second-hand record of megapodes from Raoul Island, Kermadec Group, before the 1870 volcanic eruption has veracity. -
