Culturesinterface 2014 CULTURES INTERFACE MUSTAPHA AZEROUAL 1 CulturesInterface Portfolio 2014 Mustapha Azeroual CULTURES INTERFACE Created in 2010, CulturesInterface is a private company which produces and distributes contemporary art from North Africa and the Mediterranean. As well as using its own gallery walls in Casablanca, Morocco, CulturesInterface has resolved to become an itinerant gallery travelling throughout Africa, Europe and the Americas. This concept allows us to provide a multitude of services adapted to various places and art works. Through its mobility and flexibility, CulturesInterface participates at biennales and fairs as well as it collaborates with international struc- tures and art galleries having common goals. As such, we promote artists internationally by offering turnkey exhibi- tions through our curating services and by commissioning works of art for both public and private exhibition. 2 CulturesInterface Portfolio Mustapha Azeroual MUSTAPHA AZEROUAL Born in Tours, France, in 1979, Mustapha Azeroual lives and works in Paris, France. An engineer by training, Azeroual’s work is based on observation and experimentation, combining historical shooting and printing techniques with contemporary issues regarding photography. Between installations, objects and sequences, his works multiply the scope and dimensions of photography. Through his photographic work, Mustapha Azeroual attempts to give back to the spectator what the photographer traditionally removes when they impose a point of view, a frame and a defined subject. Mustapha Azeroual has been represented by CulturesInterface since 2014. That same year, the MACAAL (Musée d’art contemporain africain Al Maaden in Morocco), acquired a photographic installation by the artist. His latest project as a photographer, ELLIOS, led him to the residency program in Oukaïmeden, Morocco with CulturesInterface in May 2015, as well as a partnership with LESIA (Solar Observation Department at the Observatory of Paris-Meudon). 3 CulturesInterface Portfolio Mustapha Azeroual Radiance #1 - 2013 M1_1 Polychrome gum bichromate print Constant height: 35 cm; variable width between 40 and 45 cm Edition of 3 + 1 AP Courtesy of the artist The series Radiance #1 and Radiance #2 focus on how color is recorded in photography based on the premise that, according to the medium, the photographer only has limited control over the colors that they capture and photographically reproduce. In the Radiance #1 series, M1 questions the very nature of color in photography. Indeed, in this series, the photographer builds upon his black and white shots, which he reinterprets during the gum bichromate printing phase, a pigment process allowing him to colorize the image. This research is conveyed through several devices, which dissociate the image and its format and experiment with the industrial production methods of images as well as photographic representation methods. In the two three-dimensional works from the series, Mustapha Azeroual decided to use drapery as a reference to the sculptural as well as a way to aesthetically play with the concept of soft images*. Indeed, the printing process used, gum bichromate, is a long process during which the image appears by superimposing successive layers of pigments. Here, Brusan© aluminum is used for its extreme fragility as well as its capacity to take shape. With every manipulation that alters the aluminum, the work bears traces of its experience and becomes, through this process, unique. 24 CulturesInterface Portfolio Mustapha Azeroual Résurgence #1 - 2010 Arbre #1 Tree-shaped mobile composed of 200 gum bichromate prints on porcelain plates 1,50 m x 1,50 m - Height: 3,10 m Single edition By using the image of the tree as an element of the collective memory, Mustapha Azeroual questions, in the Résurgence series, image fragmentation and its appropriation, by making the spectator recognize, fragment by fragment, a familiar image. In perpetual motion, the mobile’s 200 contact prints on porcelain plates thus make the spectator integral to the discovery of the image.

Here’s another nugget of dependable veracity… in my experience, gum bichromate printers are the most passionate and hard-headed of all alternative process artists when it comes to their particular way of performing the process. I can just imagine so many of my friends reading that last sentence and saying, "I just know he’s talking about me!" © Christopher James, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes: 3rd Edition, 2015 When the gum bichromate process is broken down into its three component steps, and explained in the most elementary way possible, it appears to be amazingly uncomplicated. However, to nearly every one of my students who has been taken with the process, and for those artists who are dedicated to it for life, gum bichromate slowly reveals itself to be one of the most complex in the alternative process genre. The gum bichromate process is ridiculously seductive. This is primarily due to its very limited chemistry, oh-so-simple water development, unlimited color palette using the watercolors of the artist’s choice, and very flexible ability to be coupled with a wide range of other alternative and graphic arts techniques such as platinum / palladium, cyanotype, all forms of printmaking and artist’s books. I think of gum as the photographic ambassador to the fine arts. Because of its pigment and substrate options, and brush application, gum bichromate printing is one of the few photographic processes capable of achieving that wonderful element I refer to as gesture - gesture being the evidence of the artist’s hand in the creation of an expressive and graphic mark.

    Alison Nordström The Pictorialist Object Lecture on November 21, 2013 on the occasion of the symposium “Inspirations – Interactions: Pictorialism Reconsidered” The context of this paper is a reconsideration of Pictorialism, a turn-of-the-last-century art movement that we historians of photography seem to reconsider on a regular basis, with each reconsideration bearing a reflection of its own times, particular interests, ideologies, and concerns. Today, our times are characterized by an enthusiasm for multiple perspectives and multiple points of view in photographic studies. Today, as was perhaps not the case at the turn of the last century, or even a generation ago, there is no singular aesthetic manifesto, not one dominant journal, no towering leader whose favoritisms and fallings out are legendary. I am just as happy to be moving forward without relying on a solitary arbiter like a Stieglitz, a Newhall, or a Szarkowski in what is today a larger, infinitely more diverse photographic community, but we must acknowledge their influences on how we were trained, and how we think about photographs, especially Pictorialist photographs. I am not an art historian; my work on Pictorialism reflects my training and interest in the discipline of cultural studies, specifically the study of material culture. I have spent my career working in museums, and my research and teaching have generally been with collections’ objects rather than with images viewed on a computer monitor, as projections on a screen, or on the printed page. It goes without saying that I think of photographs as things. I know from my own experience as a collections manager that they take up space and must be moved and handled in order to be used.

    Preservation of PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIAL Preservation of photographic material Introduction Photographs are housed in libraries, archives and museums all over the world. Practical photographic conservation treatment provides an option for photographs that are damaged or have deteriorated. However, it is also possible to prolong the life of a photograph through good preservation practices in handling, housekeeping and storage. This booklet describes the most common historical photographic processes, outlines the causes of deterioration and provides guidelines on good preservation practice. It is aimed at people working or volunteering in libraries, archives and museums whose responsibilities include working with photographic collections. Whilst the booklet focuses on historic black and white or monochrome photographs, much of the information is applicable to colour photographs and other imaging materials such as microfilm, x-rays and motion picture film. What is a photograph? A photograph is an image produced by the action of light. The light initiates a chemical reaction which leads to a long-lasting chemical change in a light-sensitive compound bound to a support. The support is usually made of paper, plastic, glass, or metal, but is sometimes made from other materials such as leather or cloth. Photographic images are usually continuous in tone, meaning changes in shading between light and dark are gradual and no patterns are seen, such as the regularly spaced dots or grids found in photomechanical printing processes. History Photography was officially invented in 1839 with the public announcement of Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre’s daguerreotype process in France and William Henry Fox Talbot’s photogenic drawing process in England.

And I have corrected some misspellings and some typos, but I've probably introduced others that didn't exist in the original text. Additionally, I have found that the passage of 40 years has made parts of this "how to" guide obsolete, but I haven't changed those parts for two reasons: First, I see this guide as having historical importance, and second, some of the seemingly obsolete parts still have practical value. While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note will appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photograpned, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.
