In his preface to "A Tale of Two Cities," Dickens claimed he got the original idea for the novel from this story, which he and Wilkie Collins adapted for their amateur theatrical group. I have read elsewhere that the two men collaborated on the prose tale also. Although, this book was beautifully written as I had expected, the story never built up to more than a very predictable conclusion.Since Wilkie Collins has so many wonderful books to his credit, I would go to one of them before The Frozen Deep.The Woman in White, Basil, The Moonstone, or A Rogue's Life all presented more reading entertainment.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. -

PRESS RELEASE 5 February 2021 for immediate release: PRE-RAPHAELITES: DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS Opening Spring 2021, (dates to be announced) Following the dramatic events of 2020 and significant re-scheduling of exhibition programmes, the Ashmolean is delighted to announce a new exhibition for spring 2021: Pre-Raphaelites: Drawings and Watercolours. With international loans prevented by safety and travel restrictions, the Ashmolean is hugely privileged to be able to draw on its superlative permanent collections. Few people have examined the large number of Pre-Raphaelite works on paper held in the Western Art Print Room. Even enthusiasts and scholars have rarely looked at more than a selection. This exhibition makes it possible to see a wide range of these fragile works together for the first time. They offer an intimate and rare glimpse into the world of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the artists associated with the movement. The exhibition includes works of extraordinary beauty, from the portraits they made of each other, studies for paintings and commissions, to subjects taken from history, literature and landscape. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882) In 1848 seven young artists, including John Everett Millais, William The Day Dream, 1872–8 Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, resolved to rebel against the Pastel and black chalk on tinted paper, 104.8 academic teaching of the Royal Academy of Arts. They proposed a × 76.8 cm Ashmolean Museum. University of Oxford new mode of working, forward-looking despite the movement’s name, which would depart from the ‘mannered’ style of artists who came after Raphael. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) set out to paint with originality and authenticity by studying nature, celebrating their friends and heroes and taking inspiration from the art and poetry about which they were passionate. -

Terrell, Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Caernarven-Smith, Patricia. Gladstone and the Bank of England: A Study in Mid- Victorian Finance, 1833-1866. Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 378 pp., 11 tables, bibliography, 275 titles. The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone’s measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone’s measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time. -

Covert Female Power Mediating Identity in Wilkie Collins’ The Moonstone Sydney Wildman Wilkie Collins’ text The Moonstone is a quintessential detective story which involves the theft of a precious diamond within a dynamic and complex family. The tale is recounted through shifting the narration between numerous characters. On the surface, the story is simple: the infamous Moonstone diamond has been stolen from Rachel Verinder, the heroine of the story. Her love interest, Franklin Blake serves as the hero, acting as the catalyst for the mystery’s narration as he asks the characters to recount “the story of the Moonstone… as far as our personal experience extends, and no farther”.1 He is responsible for piecing the narrative together, while also providing a substantial portion of the novel from his perspective. Indeed, Blake seems determined to solve the mystery. However, the detection work within the novel becomes more complex than a singular search for the diamond. Anne-Marie Beller argues that while “detection is a necessary quest to find the truth, meaning, and stability”2, the detection is not “merely concerned with finding out the truth about others, but more crucially about oneself”.3 Therefore, with Blake at the forefront of the detection, the process develops into a trajectory of self-discovery. Considering Blake’s contradictory sense of self, the mystery instead becomes a narrative about Blake’s identity shift from hero to thief. However, he is unable to uncover his identity alone. Instead, it is the covert forms of power that lower- and upper-class women hold – Rosanna Spearman and Rachel Verinder, respectively – that mediate Blake’s identity shift. -

This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. -

CHAPTER EIGHT Caroline AT the age of thirty-five Wilkie Collins seemed to have settled down to the life of a bachelor in premature middle- age, or so our limited knowledge of his private circum- stances would suggest. Most of his time, apart from an occasional yachting expedition or holiday abroad, had been spent in the comfortable surroundings of his mother's house. He liked to dine out, even more to entertain his friends; he was a keen theatregoer and liked to listen to music. In fact he enjoyed the normal pleasures of Victorian middle-class society, and above all he enjoyed work. As for his emotional life up to this point, any attempt to outline it must be based largely on conjecture. There is no direct evidence. Mention has been made of a serious attach- ment some ten years earlier as the possible genesis of Basil, but the details remain a mystery. If indeed Wilkie was involved in a love-affair that bore some resemblance to Basil's violent passion for Margaret Sherwin, this would only be consistent with a strange infatuation of his child- hood. When he was only twelve years old he conceived a passionate affection for a married woman three times his age. So intense was his jealousy of the woman's husband that he could not bear to be in the same room, and ran away whenever he saw him approaching. The story is told in a brief critical study of Wilkie Collins published in Germany in 1885.f Since Wilkie was alive at the time and \Wilkie Collins: Ein biographisch-kritisch versuch. -
