ABSTRACT Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media
ABSTRACT Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation Yueqin Yang, M.A. Mentor: Douglas R. Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting major stereotypes concerning Asians and Asian Americans found in the U.S. media, the “Yellow Peril,” the perpetual foreigner, the model minority, and problematic representations of gender and sexuality. In the U.S. media, Asians and Asian Americans are greatly underrepresented. Acting roles that are granted to them in television series, films, and shows usually consist of stereotyped characters. It is unacceptable to socialize such stereotypes, for the media play a significant role of education and social networking which help people understand themselves and their relation with others. Within the limited pages of the thesis, I devote to exploring such labels as the “Yellow Peril,” perpetual foreigner, the model minority, the emasculated Asian male and the hyper-sexualized Asian female in the U.S. media. In doing so I hope to promote awareness of such typecasts by white dominant culture and society to ethnic minorities in the U.S. Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation by Yueqin Yang, B.A. A Thesis Approved by the Department of American Studies ___________________________________ Douglas R. Guidelines for Television Criticism
09-O’Donnell.qxd 2/13/2007 10:27 AM Page 199 9 Guidelines for Television Criticism Introduction Now that you understand the various aspects of television as a business, pro- duction procedures, television style, narrative, genre, elements of rhetoric and cultural studies, representation, and postmodernism, you are ready to do an in-depth analysis of a television program or an episode from a series. Whether you select fiction or nonfiction programming is entirely up to you. Select a program that you can record and will not mind viewing several times because you will need to examine several aspects of it. Select a program that you want to question or one with which you are familiar. As stated in Chapter 1, it is perfectly acceptable to analyze a favorite program or one that suits your inter- ests and tastes. Your goals are to understand the various elements of a televi- sion program, to analyze it, to interpret possible meanings, to judge the quality of the program, and to communicate your assessment in writing. This chapter brings together the elements of the previous chapters into eight sections: (1) critical orientation; (2) story and genre; (3) organization; (4) demographics; (5) context; (6) the look of the program and its codes; (7) analysis; and (8) judgment. Each category includes questions that you can ask about a television program. Depending on what you want to know about the program, you can select a few or all of the categories. Not all the questions will be relevant to the program you have selected, so you can 199 09-O’Donnell.qxd 2/13/2007 10:27 AM Page 200 200—— Chapter 9 choose the questions that are most pertinent. -

Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television
Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen. -
Entertainment Media Narratives and Attitude Accessibility: Implications for Person Perception and Health Communication
Entertainment Media Narratives and Attitude Accessibility: Implications for Person Perception and Health Communication DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Parul Jain Graduate Program in Communication The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Michael D. Slater, Advisor David R. Ewoldsen Michelle Ortiz Janice Raup-Krieger Copyrighted by Parul Jain 2011 ABSTRACT Recent research has posited the influence of narrative message portrayals on message recipient’s intergroup attitudes. This study furthers this line of inquiry in three ways. First the influence of exposure to narrative messages on people’s perceptions regarding ―model minorities‖ is examined. Second, by examining the mechanisms behind some of the narrative effects, the theory in this area is furthered. Finally, unlike previous research, this study examines the issue in the context of health communication thereby bridging the gap between media effects and processes, person perception, and health communication research. One-fourth of all physicians practicing medicine in the U.S. are considered international medical graduates and the majority of these physicians come from South Asian countries. Entertainment media’s portrayal of this group of physicians could influence message recipient’s affective and cognitive perceptions regarding international physicians as previous research is suggestive of unintended influences of entertainment portrayals. Asian Pacific American Activism and the Racialization of Sophistication
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: DISSEMBLING DIVERSITIES: ON “MIDDLED” ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN ACTIVISM AND THE RACIALIZATION OF SOPHISTICATION Douglas S. Ishii, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Directed By: Professor Christina B. Hanhardt Department of American Studies Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Program Professor Janelle Wong Department of American Studies Asian American Studies Program Dissembling Diversities: On Asian Pacific American Arts Activism and the Racialization of Sophistication interrogates how contemporary Asian Pacific American (APA) arts activism and representation has been shaped by the bureaucratic administration of “diversity” after 9/11/2001. Through close readings of texts, it specifically examines Asian American representation within scripted network television programming, graphic novels and comic strips, and indie rock as iterations of panethnic activism in media advocacy, graphical storytelling, and the independent media arts. It understands these cultural forms and diversity itself through the framework of middlebrow culture, which is constituted of texts disseminated through popular culture that normalize the accumulation of cultural capital – or non-financial embodiments of class status such as education and literacy – as cultural citizenship. Dissembling Diversities makes evident how the elevation of these texts through discourses of “Art” and “diversity” relies on the association of cultural capital with whiteness, particularly through the racial exclusivity of their representations and through -

I Soprano E Gli Altri
