												  Church and Theology in the Modernist CrisisCHURCH AND THEOLOGY IN THE MODERNIST CRISIS The first task that our subject presents us with is one of definition. According to the encyclical Pascendí dominici gregis published by Pius X in September 1907, modernism is a coherent system. Although it manifests itself in a variety of spheres and disciplines, the key to its strength and its destructiveness is its philosophy. Its two basic doctrines are "agnosticism" and "vital immanence." Their implica- tions count for most of what is distinctive in modernist theology, history, biblical criticism and apologetics. What helps to make the proponents of this system "the most pernicious of all the adversaries of the Church'" is the fact that they operate not outside but within the community of faith. They include priests and members of religious orders and they present themselves to the unwary as Church reformers. They claim to form no coherent movement but to be responding as conscientious individuals to con- temporary needs and scholarly developments. In fact, however, the encyclical ar- gues, their theories consist "in a closely connected whole, so that it is not possible to admit one without admitting all." The system represents "the synthesis of all heresies." It means "the destruction not of the Catholic religion alone, but of all religion."2 There can be no doubt about the seriousness with which the authors of the en- cyclical view the movement. It threatens "to destroy the vital energy of the Church" and "to subvert the very Kingdom of Christ."3 The pope's pastoral re- sponsibilities and in particular his task of guarding the deposit of faith do not allow him to remain silent.

TALAR The historiography of Modernism has concentrated on the doctrinal issues raised by partisans of reform and their condemnation, to the relative neglect of social and political aspects. Where such connec- tions have been made the linkage has often been extrinsic: those involved in social and political reform subscribed to theses articu- lated by historical critics and critical philosophers. The connections, however, run deeper, reaching into issues surrounding authority and autonomy, ecclesiastical control of not only Catholic intellectual life but also Catholic political and social activity. This article revisits the Oath against Modernism and brings these connections into sharper resolution. “The atmosphere created by Modernism is far from being completely dissipated.”1 T MAY WELL HAVE BEEN THE CASE, given the defects of human nature Iand the effects of original sin, that ecclesiastics on more than one occa- sion violated the second commandment when they considered the effects of Roman Catholic Modernism. The reference to the motu proprio Sacrorum antistitum in my subtitle, however, indicates that a different kind of swear- ing is of interest here. As its centerpiece, the motu proprio promulgated an Oath against Modernism, prefaced by the republication, textually, of the final, disciplinary section of the antimodernist encyclical, Pascendi dominici gregis. Following the oath was an instruction originally addressed in 1894 to the bishops of Italy and to the superiors of religious congregations C. J. T. The name of the “conservative reform Pope” Pius X (1903-1904)1 has been linked to a ‘modernizing’ increase in efficiency of the Roman Curia and of the entire pastoral organisation of the catholic Church – with a decidedly anti-modern tendency.2 With the goal of a Christian restauration of society (Omnia instaurare in Christo; Eph 1:10), the Pope ‘reformed’ especially the church of Italy by implementing a rigorous visitation.3 Not content with the slow workings of the Roman Congregations of Index and Inquisition, Pius X envisioned new ways of control also for the church around the world in his fight against ‘modernism’.The pope’s Encyclical Pascendi dominici gregis,4 which appeared in September 1907, defined ‘modernism’ as the sum of all heresies, a kind of super-heresy of modernity.5 1 Aubert, “Pius X.”. 2 Cf. 												  Loisy's Theological Development Valentine GLOISY'S THEOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT VALENTINE G. MORAN, S.J. Campion College, Victoria, Australia N DECEMBER 1903 the Congregation of the Holy Office added five I works of Alfred Loisy to its Index of Prohibited Books1 and made their author widely known. Up to this time the Abbé Loisy had written most of his articles and books for seminarians and priests, or for scholars engaged in his own field of biblical studies. He was hardly known to the general public of France; even the Catholic public had only recently begun to hear of him. He wrote about the Scriptures and the questions that critics, particularly in Germany, had been asking for over fifty years about their truth, authorship, and inspiration; and his readiness to accept many of the answers which the critics offered had put him squarely among a small group of Catholic scholars in Europe who wanted to adapt the Church's teaching to the contemporary world, to have the Church absorb, not reject, the results of scientific research that had a bearing on religion and especially on Christianity. Loisy's writing had caused trouble with his superiors before 1903. He had been forced to resign his chair of Scripture at the Institut Catholique of Paris in 1893; in 1900 the Archbishop of Paris forbade the Revue du clergé français2 to publish anything he wrote.3 By that time what had reached the clergy, especially the younger priests, was through them beginning to reach the laity, and the publication by Loisy of several radical articles between 1898 and 1903 caused controversy in the Catholic press.

												  The Enduring Tensions Between Catholicism and ModernityIntegritas 6.1 (Fall 2015), pp. 1-22. doi: 10.6017/integritas.v6i1p1 The Enduring Tensions Between Catholicism and Modernity Julian Bourg1 This essay intervenes in the ongoing debate on the place of the Church in the contemporary world by returning to older discussions of Catholicism and modernity. After revisiting the role of anti-Catholicism in the classic account of modernity as well as the tradition of Catholic anti-modernism, I focus on how the Vatican II spirit of aggiornamento unhappily coincided with a more general crisis of modernity in the 1970s–1990s. The moment witnessed both the retreat of modernity as a meaningful concept and “postmodern” religious revival. In our new century we confront the challenge of articulating living traditions amidst global complexity. Rodkey, 2015 ii Abstract The life of Magda Arnold (1903-2002)—best known for her pioneering appraisal theory of emotion—spanned the 20th century, and as a result she witnessed the rise and fall of many of the major “schools” of psychology. Arnold had an unusual perspective on these theories of psychology, due in large part to an event that occurred in 1948: her conversion to Roman Catholicism. Throughout her life, but especially following her conversion, Arnold rejected reductionistic theories of the human person, instead articulating theories which emphasized human agency and telos, and which held up the human experience as the primary source of psychological knowledge. Arnold’s conversion significantly affected her career, as she made professional sacrifices to teach in Catholic institutions and was open about her religious identity in her academic work at a time when Catholic scholars were suspect. Arnold’s conversion also shaped her psychological thinking—she later credited her conversion and her resulting exposure to scholastic philosophy with inspiring her appraisal theory. Although there were other Catholics active in psychology at mid-century, Arnold was unusual even in that cohort for her seamless integration of her faith and her science. Arnold’s involvement in psychology (1935-1975) roughly corresponds with a period in academic psychology in which there was very minimal investigation of religious topics (1930-1976)—they were generally considered taboo or unscientific.
