GISMO And The Telescope - Mapping the Young Universe from Greenland

Thomas R. Greve What is the GLT? - A brief history

Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) • The GLT is a US prototype antenna for ALMA.

• Designed and built by VERTEX.

• Awarded to Academica Sinica (Taiwan) and Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (US) in 2012.

• Brought to Thule in 2016.

• ALMA and GLT are radio telescopes

• Observe at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths

• Study cold and dusty objects in the Universe What is the GLT? - Currents partners & budget

The GLT in Thule • NSF: ~22M$ (local infrastructure)

• SAO: ~10M$ (support buildings)

• ASIAA: ~14M$ (telescope facility) What is the GLT? - Currents partners & budget

Year ‘zero’ Sep 2018 • Renewed Danish interest in the GLT, sparked by DTU Space pitch for GLT science sent to IDA (Instrument center for Danish Astrophysics). Jan 2019 • Talks with Johannes Staguhn (NASA) about bringing the GISMO camera to the GLT Feb 2019 • DTU-DAWN and NBI-Starplan arranges GLT meeting in Copenhagen with participation of TW and US partners. • Talks with Jørgen Peder Steffensen on moving GLT to Greenland Summit • Danish GLT Steering Group is formed • www.greenlandtelescope.dk is launched

Apr 2019 • Press conference at DTU Space on EHT / M87 black hole discovery. Lots of national media attention on the EHT and GLT • The next day the (then) Danish Minister of Research requests a personal briefing on black holes. Aug 2019 • Paul Ho visits DK to discuss Danish involvement (logistics, instrumentation). Agree to formulate an official Letter of Interest between the relevant Danish, Taiwanese, and US partners.

Jan 2020 • Carlsberg Infrastructure Grant awarded to bring GISMO to the GLT.
