I had had occasion frequently, during my residence in the town of Huntington, to consult the book of records of the original proprietors, and had traced a copy of the proprietors' plan of the town for my own use, as occasion might require in my professional work in the neighborhood; but it had never occurred to me to write a history of the town, nor to institute investigations in that direction. Some time after the organization of ''The Connecticut Valley Historical Society" I promised to write a sketch of the town of Murrayfield, in a single paper, to be read before the society; but several years transpired before I felt sure that I had found the start- ing point. The more I investigated, the richer the field proved. From the proprietors' records, from the registry of deeds, from the records of courts, from the records of the Colonial General Court, from original documents in the office of the Secretary of the Com- monwealth, from the records of the old town and of the old church, and from inscriptions upon headstones in the old cemetery, I gathered together a greater array of facts than had at first seemed possible. -

Text of Lecture Re: Willard Museum 30 th Anniversary © Written from outline used for the lecture Introduction: I had the great honor to be asked to give an address at ceremonies recognizing the thirtieth anniversary of the opening of Willard House and Clock Museum. That was in June of 2001. In July of 2009 Dr. Roger Robinson celebrated his 100 th birthday. He and his late wife Imogene (1901–2004) founded the museum. Both Dr. and Mrs. Robinson attended the ceremonies, and Dr. Robinson gave a fascinating and witty recount of events leading to the opening of the museum. In honor of Dr. Robinson’s centennial the staff of Willard House decided to publish the remarks below. I have written the text from the outline I used at the ceremonies. It fairly closely follows the original remarks as I remember them. I have added some personal footnotes where I think they might add to the text. John C. Losch August, 2009 Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. This is a wonderful gathering, and it is encouraging to see so many people interested in both the existence and history of the Willard Museum. I think it is appropriate to ask why we are celebrating the Willard Museum. Why not the Smith, or the Robinson Museum? The simple answer is that the Willards were, and remain, the most prominent clockmaking family in the history of American clockmaking. During a period of over 100 years there were numerous Willard family clockmakers. Here are a few reasons why the family has remained prominent for so long. -

Please do not use without permission.] Poverty, Mobility, and Revolution 25 May 2015 Nian-Sheng Huang California State University Channel Islands The nature and extent of poverty on the eve of the American Revolution have long intrigued two groups of modern scholars who hold opposite views. Believing that the number of the poor is insignificant in a predominantly middle-class society, one group has stressed America's great promise, abundance, opportunity, and mobility. Meanwhile, the other group-convinced of having found so severe a conflict between the haves and have-nots as close to the brink of a class w a r- has underscored America's glaring inadequacies, limits, inequalities, and inconsistencies. These conflicting views are further compounded with another tendency of casting eighteenth-century poverty into the unmitigated mold of rich against poor-a dichotomous approach often silent about the manifest distinctions between the middle and the upper classes on the one hand, while downplaying many crucial differences between the laboring classes and the poor on the other. In recent years Ruth Wallis Herndon's Unwelcome Americans (2001), Jacqueline Barbara Carr's After the Siege (2005), Barry Levy's Town Born (2009), Seth Rockman's Scraping By (2009), and Cornelia H. Dayton and Sharon V. Salinger's Robert Love's Warnings (2014) have filled some of the gaps and addressed some of the weaknesses in earlier investigations. This new output of scholarship in the post-revisionist era advanced two salient changes. First, more sophisticated understanding and more sensitive delineations of class stratification and class relationships than before came to light as a result of these new publications, which significantly broadened 1 the narrowly defined class antagonism and class consciousness revisionist history had tried to demonstrate since the 1960s. -

American Watch Papers With a Descriptive List of the Collection in the American Antiquarian Society BY DOROTHEA E. SPEAR O LIBRARY or museum in the country, so far as we N know, had attempted to gather a comprehensive collection of watch papers until the American Antiquarian Society became interested. In 1948 the Library had an opportunity to purchase twenty-six early papers which originally were in the possession of Dr. Samuel A. Bemis, of Boston. Bemis, whose father, Samuel Bemis, was a watchmaker, was apprenticed to the trade in Boston about 1810, but in the hard times following the War of 1812, young Bemis realized that the making of watches was not a lucra- tive business. He therefore decided to become a dentist and practiced very successfully in Boston for man)'- years until the i86o*s when he removed to Hart's Location in New Hampshire. It is believed that he gathered old watches to melt for the filling of teeth, removed the watch papers, and carefully preserved them. During his entire life. Dr. Bemis had the reputation of not throwing away even the smallest items and for this New England thrift we are most grateful. The little lot of papers, including his father's handsomely engraved advertisement as a watchmaker, formed the nu- cleus of the Society's collection which now numbers two hundred and fifty-eight examples. The Bemis watch shop, consisting of partially completed watches and clocks, small tools, and work benches, was acquired in 1929 by the Edison Institute Museum at Dearborn, Michigan. 298 AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY [Oct., There are large collections of English watch papers in London, at the Guildhall Library, and in English private collections such as those of John Eliot Hodgkin and Edward Heron-Allen. -

Their children were Theodore Thomas and Alta Adele. Theodore was my husband’s father. Oscar’s father was Thomas Lawrence McNelley who married Sarah Amelia Lamb, grand-daughter of Joseph Lamb and Clora Willard. The Lambs and the Willards have been traced back to eighteenth-century Vermont in the years following the American Revolution. Joseph Lamb was born in Rhode Island in 1763 and served in the Revolutionary War before settling in Vermont. His Lamb forebears had settled in New London, Connecticut in the late 1600s. -
