It incorporates five hospitals in East London and the City (Whipps Cross, Newham, The Royal London, St Bartholomew's and Mile End) together with community health services for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. With a turnover of more than £1.3 billion and 16,000 staff, the Trust is committed to delivering high quality and effective patient care to a diverse population of 2.5 million people who rely on it for both general and highly specialist services. Three of the hospital sites offer full 24 hour, 7 day a week emergency care. The Trust also delivers specialist and tertiary care, including Trauma, Cardiovascular, Cancer, Renal and Neurosciences. Earlier this year the Trust opened the new Barts Heart Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, combining services from St Bartholomew's, The London Chest and The Heart Hospitals. Over the course of a year the Trust conducts over 50,000 operations, delivers over 15,000 babies, treats 450,000 people in its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Departments and sees around 1.4 million outpatients. The Trust’s contribution to the local economy is vital to east London’s population – Barts Health sits at the heart of the local communities.     For immediate release Ensuring a healthy future for Whipps Cross and local people Whipps Cross Hospital has taken the first step towards ensuring a future of safe and sustainable local health care. Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, is appointing a team of experts to undertake a review of the hospital estate and services, and begin to plan improvements. With a population that is growing and getting older, the Trust is working with local partners to provide a thriving, affordable local hospital fit for future health needs. The district general Whipps Cross Hospital treats more than 1,600 patients every day, providing a wide range of health services to people in Waltham Forest and beyond. However the existing buildings are old, with almost half the estate predating the founding of the NHS in 1948. The layout can be confusing for patients and visitors to find their way around and impedes delivery of quality and safe care. In total the estate requires investment of £80m. This is in the face of an ever growing and aging population in east London. It is estimated that over the next 15 years the population of east London is forecast to rise by 270,000. Equivalent to the size of a small town, it will be enough potential patients to require an additional 500-bed hospital to look after their health needs. The review is being led by Barts Health, Waltham Forest Council, NHS Waltham Forest Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and the NELFT NHS Foundation Trust. It is part of the Transforming Services Together programme, which seeks to ensure that local health and care organisations work together to look at options for creating a hospital that works well into the future.

Food waste management plays a key role as part of a much wider remit to improve sustainability and health outcomes, including the Trust’s desire to reduce the overall carbon footprint of waste services. Via its sustainability strategy, the Trust aims to reduce food waste by 15% per patient, per year and to be the most sustainable Trust by 2020. Skanska currently deliver both PFI and non-PFI waste management contracts across the 6 primary hospital sites. Food waste is collected via a sub-contract to CD Waste, who in turn sub-contract Grays Waste Management Ltd. Grays Waste Management collects food waste from four of the six sites with the remaining two1 due to receive the scheme later in 2014. Background Barts Health NHS Trust has a rigorous sustainability strategy in place covering social, financial and environmental aspects of the Trust’s operations. The primary desire of the Trust is to manage food waste in line with the waste hierarchy and the Trust views food waste reduction as preferable to collection for treatment by anaerobic digestion.
