Wood’s fi rm is representative of a geographically distinct category of post-war architectural and design practice – that of the small private practice that fl ourished in Britain’s expanding suburbs after the removal of wartime building restrictions. Such fi rms, which played a signifi cant role in the development of British domestic design, are currently under-represented within architectural histories of the period. The private house represents an important site in which new spatial, material and aesthetic parameters for modern living were defi ned after the Second World War. Within a British context, the architect-designed private house remained a ‘vehicle for the investigation of architectural ideas’ by second generation modernist architects and designers. Through a series of case study houses, designed by Wood’s fi rm, the book reconsiders the progress of modern domestic architecture in Britain and demonstrates the ways in which architectural discourse and practice intersected with the experience, performance and representation of domestic modernity in post-war Britain.     Sir Herbert Baker Sir Herbert Baker (9th June 1862 – 4th February 1946) was an English architect who is remembered as a dominant force in South African architecture. He was one of the three principal architects appointed to the Imperial (now Commonwealth) War Graves Commission (IWGC) when the Commission was formed in 1917; designing many memorials and cemeteries in France and Belgium in the years following the end of World War I. This helpsheet is designed to be used by primary teachers as background information on Sir Herbert Baker. There is also a set of Sir Herbert Baker fact cards which can be shared with pupils. Both this helpsheet and the fact cards can be used as part of WMT’s Art unit of work: Great artists and war memorials. Early life Baker was born at Owlets, the family farm, near Cobham, Kent. He was the fourth son of nine children of Thomas Henry and Frances Georgina Baker. As a child Baker spent much of his time walking around the neighbourhood of his home, exploring the historical ruins. While exploring he observed the time honoured materials of brick and plaster and the various aspects of timber use all of which he learned to appreciate. Between 1875 and 1881 Baker attended the nearby Tonbridge School where lifelong qualities of leadership and loyalty were instilled in him. Training and work before World War I In 1879, Baker began his architecture studies under the supervision of his cousin Arthur Baker. His education followed the accepted pattern of a three-year apprenticeship while attending classes at the Architectural Association School and the Royal Academy Schools.

Scholars ask `What if?' What if Schwitters had got a passport to United States and had joined other artists in exile? He would have continued making Merz with American material. He would have had no `need' to paint figuratively.1 Would he have fitted his past into an even more `modernist' mould like his friend Naum Gabo, to please the New Yorkers?2 Surely not. `Emigration is the best school of dialectics' declared Bertold Brecht.3 Schwitters' last period must be investigated not in terms of `exile' but the dialectics of exile: as a future which cuts off a past which lives on through it all the more intensely in memory, repetition, recreation. `Exile' moreover is a purely negative term, foreclosing all the inspirational possibilities of a new `genius loci', a spirit of place: England. The Germany Schwitters knew was disfigured, disintegrating, self-destructing. His longing was for place which was no more. His Merzbau was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943; Helma died in 1944: `Hanover a heap of ruins, Berlin destroyed, and you're not allowed to say how you feel.'4 The English period was a both a death and a birth, a question of identity through time, of new and old languages.
