Full Time 246 Chapter 1 Wembley 1967 S dream starts to new jobs go, even Carlsberg would have struggled to improve on Bobby Brown’s. Appointed A Scotland team manager only two months earlier, on 11 April 1967 he oversaw his team beating England, then reigning world champions, at Wembley, English football’s impressive and emblematic stadium. It was his first full international in charge and England’s first loss in 20 games. To defeat the world champions, Scotland’s most intense and enduring rivals, in these circumstances was an outstanding achievement, like winning the Grand National on your debut ride or running a four-minute mile in your first race. The date is enshrined in Scottish football history as one of its most memorable days. In fans’ folklore, it was the day when Scotland became ‘unofficial world champions’ by knocking England off their throne – and what could be sweeter for a Scottish fan? As Brown said, in his understated way at the time, ‘It was a fairly daunting task for your first game in charge.

Victory a must tonight Our European visitors tonight, Legia Warsaw, were very much an unknown quantity when the second round draw of the Cup-Winners' Cup was made. So, over the past few days, we have all been doing our homework on our Polish guests. Jocky Scott didn't have much luck when he first tried to visit Poland to have a look at them, because their Embassy in London couldn't get a necessary visa through quickly enough for us. Then games were postponed to allow the Poles to prepare for last week's international against England at Wembley. Jocky did, however, manage to assess Warsaw on Sunday when he took in their game agaist Lodz, so we now know all about their current form. In fact, it was a hectic spell for Jocky, as he was also in Bucharest last Wednesday taking in Romania's game against Bulgaria for Andy Roxburgh. Right now, though, it's Warsaw who concern us. To get a general feel of the Alex Smith Polish style we also had Drew Jarvie in London lastweek. Drew was at White Hart Lane on Tuesday for the under Switzerland. I know he will be able to come straight in 21 clash and the following night he was among the and handle this situation. Wembley crowd for the senior international. Legia Beating Hearts by 3-0 on Saturday was a lovely boost for Warsaw had one player, Kosecki, in the line up which lost us. The performance came at exactly the right time. Not to England. And they also had another two on the bench.

Celtic's run to the 1970 European Cup final by Tom Brogan Originally published on the State of the Game website in September and October 2006 Celtic's 1970 European Cup Campaign – From Beginnings To The Quarter Finals Celtic open their Champions' League campaign on Wednesday against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Their UEFA Cup Final appearance in 2003 gave the current support a taste of European success that fans of earlier generations enjoyed for a number of years. While I was watching The History of Football DVD it focused on the rise of Northern Europe in the game. This began at club level with Celtic's 1967 European Cup win over Inter Milan. Three years after their triumph in Lisbon, Celtic returned to the European Cup Final, this time in Milan, to play Dutch champions Feyenoord. As I watched the goals from that match it dawned on me that although I had seen the 1967 success many times on TV, I had never seen the highlights from the 1970 game before. As a result of this I thought now might be a time to have a look at the campaign that saw The Bhoys fall at the final hurdle in their quest for a second European trophy. Their run to the 1970 final saw dramatic comebacks, sensational climaxes, records being broken, a 'Battle of Britain' and some truly memorable matches. First Round – First Leg September 17th 1969 FC Basel 0 – 0 Celtic (Att: 38,000) Celtic opened their campaign in September of 1969 away to FC Basel of Switzerland, who were managed by the former German international Helmut Benthaus.

V Brně dne 15. listopadu 2015 Jan Jačisko Declaration I hereby declare that I worked on this thesis on my own and that I used only sources mentioned in the List of References. Brno, November 2015 .......................................... Jan Jačisko 2 Acknowledgement I would like to express my gratitude to the supervisor of my bachelor thesis, Mgr. Zdeněk Janík, M.A., Ph.D., for his guidance and professional advice during the development of this bachelor thesis. 3 Abstract The aim of this bachelor thesis is to show the influence of religion in Scotland over the rivalry between football teams situated in Glasgow – Celtic FC and Rangers FC. In the first chapter, the religious background of Scotland is described in order to explain some major events in Scottish history that help to understand the antagonism between Catholics and Protestants today. The second chapter deals with the origins of the rivalry. It summarizes foundations of both teams, and it describes the roots that led to a foundation of the “Old Firm” rivalry. The third chapter analyses the policies of the two clubs. There is a huge difference between Rangers’ “Sign No Catholic” policy and Celtic’s policy that allows them to sign any player no matter what religion he practices.
