    An Introduction to the Architectural History of Towneley Hall Susan Bourne TOWNELEY HALL ART GALLERY AND MUSEUMS Curator: Hubert R. Rigg, FRSA, FSA.SCOT. Published by The Arts Sub-Committee, 1979 Burnley Borough Council INTRODUCTION The dramatic and rather sombre impression conveyed by Towneley Hall today is the result of a long and extremely complicated architectural history. A close inspection of the walls will reveal blocked-up doorways, false windows and changes in the stonework. Inside rooms in various styles from l6th century gothic to the heavy classicism of the early l9th century bear witness to the many architects and craftsmen who have been involved in the construction and reconstruction of the building. Many of the features that give the building its medieval appearance are deceptive, although traces of l5th century work remain. This architectural development has not been studied in detail since Whittaker's `History of Whalley' was published in 1801. Thomas Dunham Whittaker of The Holme in Cliviger was a friend of his neighbour, Charles Towneley, and was able to examine the Towneley collection of documents. The `History of Whalley' ran into several editions during the l9th century and most later writers have followed Whittaker closely. The authors of the `Victoria County History of Lancashire' were not able to examine the Towneley documents and, as a result, some errors such as the attribution of Jeffry Wyatt's early l9th century dining room and drawing room to the early 18th century were perpetuated. Mr. Walter Bennett in his `History of Burnley' included some interesting information on the architecture of Towneley and acknowledged the many, problems connected with Towneley Hall.

    Tracing the Towneleys 2004 In the Towneley Room of the museum at Towneley Hall is the family tree of the family who once lived there. Many visitors to the museum ask for more information about the family history and some can even show their own ancestral links with early members of the Towneley family. The guide Tracing the Towneleys was compiled in 2000 in response to their requests. Many descendants of the family have had a strong interest in genealogy but few more so than Christopher Towneley (1604-1674) and this update in 2004 celebrates his 400th birthday. Among the new material are extracts from Christopher's evidences for proving the pedigree of the Towneleys of Towneley, which he wrote in 1662. This manuscript only returned on loan to Towneley in June 2003 after a period of more than 100 years away. There is also a new section on the Claimants. The creation of the National Archives A2A database has provided a major new resource since 2000 and a short description of what it can offer rounds off the section Other Townleys. Preface - web version This new edition of Tracing the Towneleys differs from the previous version in three main ways. Firstly, it has been produced primarily as a PDF file for free distribution on the internet. When the previous version was written in 2000, a PDF file was only created later as an after-thought. Secondly, there is much more about early members of the family born before 1604. Thirdly, the pedigree of the Towneleys of Towneley has been simplified and no longer repeats the legends believed by 19th century antiquarians.

    The story of Towneley Park in maps 1661-2007 Tony Kitto A brief history of Towneley Park from maps Introduction This history of Towneley Park is produced at a time when Towneley is undergoing a number of changes made possible by a Heritage Lottery Grant. The aim here is to put these changes into historical perspective. Just like Towneley Hall, Towneley Park was not created all at one time but has continually changed, for without change the park decays and becomes overgrown. These notes also aims to answer most of the frequently asked questions about the park and its main features, such as how old is it, who created it and how did they come to own it. Maps are used to describe the main influences that have formed the park and created its boundaries. The earliest records are very vague and there is no detailed map earlier than 1661. A good place to begin is that part of Towneley first opened as a public park in 1902. In 1896, Alice, Lady O'Hagan, offered to sell Towneley Hall and grounds to Burnley Corporation. This map was made to identify the land to be included in the offer. It remains today one of the best examples of a map of Towneley that clearly achieved its stated purpose. The green outline identifies the land for sale. Almost all the footpaths seen within the park are still in use in 2007. Another major feature is the Copy Clough stream, clearly shown in blue. High Royd is now a pitch and putt course.
