The Decca Sound is a brilliant 50 album overview of analogue recordings that Decca produced in the pre-digital era. The beginnings of high fidelity, their ‘Full Frequency Stereophonic Sound’ became a worldwide hallmark of sonic excellence, bringing in a golden age of classical recorded music. Included in the box are celebrated recordings from the likes of Solti, Haitink, Kertesz and Dorati - recordings and performances that certainly still stand the test of time today. See p.2 for details. The Bach Cantata Pilgrimage is a series that has been closely followed by many collectors over the past few years, especially since the Monteverdi Choir’s move from DG to the wonderful presentation of the SDG label. For those who have eagerly picked up every volume, the complete collection in a single box may be superfluous, but for anyone who has simply dabbled, or maybe not even tried, it is a real treat. Coming in at £149.95, it is also a great saving on the c.£500 value of the individual items (especially bearing in mind that several volumes have now been deleted). See p.3 for details. As we are rapidly running out of space, we will just mention a few other items quickly.

Interview mit John Sheahan 2002 (Hans-Jürgen Fink, Hamburger Abendblatt) ? Was für eine Situation war das damals in Irland, als die Dubliners in den 60er- Jahren ihre Karriere starteten? Welche Bedeutung hatte das Singen und Musizieren, und welche Marktlücke haben Sie damals erobert? ! 1962 – das war eine völlig andere Welt, sie hat sich viel langsamer bewegt – heute ist alles so hektisch und verrückt. Die Leute hatten mehr Zeit, Zeit zum Nachdenken. Und die irische Musik, das war die Welt der älteren Generation. Sie war nicht schrecklich populär unter jüngeren Leuten und hat diese Generation erst langsam wieder erobert. Bei mir war das etwas anders, ich habe Tin Whistle gelernt und dann Flöte; ich bin ja wie Barney MacKenna in einer musikalischen Familie aufgewachsen. Die Art der „Dubliners“, mit der traditionellen irischen Musik umzugehen, war neu und erfrischend, sie brachte eine ganz andere Vitalität hinein. Nur ein Beispiel: Die älteren Musiker, das waren meist Dance Bands, sie haben alle gesessen. Wir standen auf der Bühne, wir haben gespielt und gesungen, und wir haben uns bewegt. Die Leute schienen das zu mögen, und so haben wir uns unsere ganz eigene Nische im Markt geschaffen. Wir haben die Leute magisch zur irischen Musik hingezogen, der wir neues Leben eingehaucht hatten. ? Sie sind jetzt vierzig Jahre im Musikgeschäft – das ist einzigartig. The Stanislavski studio was so named as the type of training that Deirdre wanted to bring to Ireland. It was based on the theatrical theoh and techniques of the Russian Theatre practitioner, actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski (1863-1938), founder and theatre administrator ofthe Moscow Art Theatre and creator ofthe Stanislavski system of actor training, 'the most influential system of acting in the Western World'.2 The Stanislavski approach is a system of training, not a specific style of acting, that aims to provide the skills necessary for the actor to develop the inner life; the emotional and sensory life of the character.

Volunteers The first 75 years of the West Side Irish American Club By Judge Sean C. Gallagher The only “true” historians of events are those who were actually present. Unfortunately, participants rarely memorialize events and much is lost with the passage of time. The history of The West Side Irish American Club is no exception. What follows is an effort to chronicle the history of the WSIA as an institution. It is not designed or intended to serve as a personal history of individuals, either living or dead, whose contributions made the WSIA the success it is today. To praise and recognize all the individuals who contributed over the past 75 years would require a major publication that this space does not permit. While some individuals are named, many who justly deserve praise and recognition are not. To that end, an expanded and revised version of this writing, containing the greater record of anyone not named here, will be completed and made available to members in the future through the WSIA library. Volunteers… Ask any gathering of Irish Americans in Cleveland about the origins of the West Side Irish American Club (“WSIA”), and you’re likely to get countless separate and distinct explanations. This does not mean that the versions advanced are inaccurate; rather, it reflects the fact that there is no single event that, or person who, can fully explain the Club’s origin.
