Two years on from our hugely successful inaugural event in Brussels it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 2009 World Copyright Summit in Washington, DC. This year’s slogan for the Summit – “New Frontiers for Creators in the Marketplace” – illustrates perfectly what we aim to achieve here: remind to the world that creators’ contributions are fundamental for cultural, economic and social development but also that creators – and those who represent them – face several daunting challenges in this new digital economy. It is imperative that we bring to the forefront of political debate the creative industries’ future and where we, creators, fit into this new landscape. For this reason we have gathered, under the CISAC umbrella, all the stakeholders involved one way or another in the creation, production and dissemination of creative works. -

The concert which taped on February 4 at Webster Hall in New York City is part of The Rhapsody Rocks concert series and part of VH1 and Rhapsody's ultimate fan sweepstakes for The Fray's new album, The Fray (epic). In the concert, "The Fray: Live In NYC," the band will perform songs from their hit album How To Save A Life and songs from their new self-titled album, The Fray. Archaeological Starch Preservation and Methodological Parameters: Where Does Qaraqara Fit?
ARCHAEOLOGICAL STARCH PRESERVATION AND METHODOLOGICAL PARAMETERS: WHERE DOES QARAQARA FIT? Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Nicole Marie Hernandez, B.A. Department of Anthropology The Ohio State University 2015 Master’s Committee: Professor Julie S. Field, Advisor Professor Kristen J. Gremillion Professor Robert Cook Copyright by Nicole Marie Hernandez 2015 ABSTRACT Starch granule analysis is a relatively new methodology that can aid in various areas of archaeological research, including the determination of subsistence patterns and transitions, mobility, tool use, and ecology. This study examines undecorated ceramic fragments recovered from Qaraqara, Fiji for the presence of adhered starch. Although the three starch extraction methods used were not successful, the research process provides an opportunity to explain the lack of success by investigating ideal archaeological starch preservation parameters and extraction methodologies. Many factors contribute to the rarity of preserved starch granules in archaeological settings, including its bio-chemical structure, the decomposition of microorganisms in soil, chemical interactions, and environmental conditions. To determine ideal environmental conditions for starch preservation, successful extraction methods, and the effect of archaeological materials on success rates for extraction, a meta-analysis was conducted on a sample of archaeological studies that also sought to extract preserved starch. Key environmental variables that support the preservation of starch were identified, including a specific range of average temperatures, rainfall amounts, and altitudes. Using chi-square statistical tests, this study determined that an average temperature of 19-22° C significantly contributes to the preservation of archaeological starch. -

Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. Interview mit John Sheahan 2002 (Hans-Jürgen Fink, Hamburger Abendblatt) ? Was für eine Situation war das damals in Irland, als die Dubliners in den 60er- Jahren ihre Karriere starteten? Welche Bedeutung hatte das Singen und Musizieren, und welche Marktlücke haben Sie damals erobert? ! 1962 – das war eine völlig andere Welt, sie hat sich viel langsamer bewegt – heute ist alles so hektisch und verrückt. Die Leute hatten mehr Zeit, Zeit zum Nachdenken. Und die irische Musik, das war die Welt der älteren Generation. Sie war nicht schrecklich populär unter jüngeren Leuten und hat diese Generation erst langsam wieder erobert. Bei mir war das etwas anders, ich habe Tin Whistle gelernt und dann Flöte; ich bin ja wie Barney MacKenna in einer musikalischen Familie aufgewachsen. Die Art der „Dubliners“, mit der traditionellen irischen Musik umzugehen, war neu und erfrischend, sie brachte eine ganz andere Vitalität hinein. Nur ein Beispiel: Die älteren Musiker, das waren meist Dance Bands, sie haben alle gesessen. Wir standen auf der Bühne, wir haben gespielt und gesungen, und wir haben uns bewegt. Die Leute schienen das zu mögen, und so haben wir uns unsere ganz eigene Nische im Markt geschaffen. Wir haben die Leute magisch zur irischen Musik hingezogen, der wir neues Leben eingehaucht hatten. ? Sie sind jetzt vierzig Jahre im Musikgeschäft – das ist einzigartig. Wie würden Sie denn Ihr Erfolgsrezept beschreiben? ! Vermutlich ist es unser Erfolgsrezept, dass wir nie irgendeins gehabt haben. Wir haben ja noch nicht mal Verträge untereinander. Wir spielen einfach, wir haben musikalisch viel anzubieten, jeder bringt seine Soli ein. Und noch etwas ist ganz wichtig: Wir hängen nicht zwischen unseren Tourneen zusammen.
