Nearest station: Charing Cross . Section distance: 2 miles (3 kilometres). Introduction. This is a circular walk in the heart of London linking the institutions of The Monarchy and the Government. This section of the Jubilee Walkway connects with section one at Trafalgar Square and at Great George Street. Look out for the Jubilee Walkway discs in the pavement as you go round. Directions. This walk starts from Trafalgar Square. Did you know? Trafalgar Square was laid out in 1840 by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the new Houses of Parliament. The square, which is now a 'World Square', is a place for national rejoicing, celebrations and demonstrations. It is dominated by Nelson's Column with the 18-foot statue of Lord Nelson standing on top of the 171-foot column. It was erected in honour of his victory at Trafalgar. With Trafalgar Square behind you and keeping Canada House on the right, cross Cockspur Street and keep right. Go around the corner, passing the Ugandan High Commission to enter The Mall under the large stone Admiralty Arch - go through the right arch. Keep on the right-hand side of the broad avenue that is The Mall. Did you know? Admiralty Arch is the gateway between The Mall, which extends southwest, and Trafalgar Square to the northeast. The Mall was laid out as an avenue between 1660-1662 as part of Charles II's scheme for St James's Park.

    20TH JANUARY 2020 George IV: Radical or Reactionary? Dr Stella Tillyard Good evening. I am going to talk tonight about George IV. 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of his accession to the British throne, and this anniversary - opportunely in the light of recent events in the institution of the monarchy - gives us the opportunity to think about the role of an individual, as a private and as a public person, in this most gilded of cages. I am going to ask a few questions about George IV, of the sort of questions that historians do still ask if only of selected historical figures - male figures for the most part - monarchs, politicians, generals and so on - that is to say, was George IV a success, as a public figure - was he a good Prince of Wales, Regent, King? Did he do what the institution of the monarchy demanded of him? I am also going to talk about his influence: did he leave anything that was distinguished, useful or beautiful? And then I am going to talk about him as a person, because George was, after a fashion, a private man, trying, within the constraints of the institution he was born to inherit and head, to lead some sort of private life. Finally, I'll ask if on the 200th anniversary of George IV's accession we should reassess the reputation that he has and modify it in any way. George IV's reputation was poor when he acceded to the throne in 1820, and poor when he died in 1830. The day after his funeral the Times newspaper ran a leader declaring with undeferential relish, 'there never was an individual less regretted by his fellow creatures than this deceased King'.

    Wimbledon and Putney Commons Annual Conservation Report 2018/19 Introduction The Annual Conservation Report for 2018/19 provides a summary of the conservation activities that have been carried out on Wimbledon and Putney Commons from 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019. Written by the Conservation and Engagement Officer for Wimbledon and Putney Commons, this report also provides details of the wide range of volunteering activities and public engagement events that have taken place on the Commons during the year. Throughout the year, the Commons’ Saturday morning volunteer ‘Scrub Bashers’ are involved with cutting back invasive saplings around the Commons’ remaining areas of heathland and open ground. 1 Heathland Management: Working under the guidance of our current involvement with the Higher Tier element of Natural England’s (NE) Countryside Stewardship (CS) agreement, between 1st April 2018 and 31st March 2019, heathland management has remained an ongoing part of the Commons’ overall programme of habitat management. Found on free draining, nutrient poor, acidic soils, lowland heathland is classed as a priority habitat under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan because it is a rare and threatened habitat. According to Natural England’s Countryside Stewardship Negotiation Schedule, the aim of the management of lowland heathland is ‘to provide a mosaic of vegetation which allows all heathland features to flourish, including pioneer heath and bare ground which benefits rarer invertebrates, birds, reptiles and plants’. Following a disastrous fire in September 1952 the remains of the house were demolished amidst much controversy shortly before the Coleshill estate including the house were due to pass to the National Trust. The editor of The Connoisseur, L.G.G. Ramsey, published a piece in the magazine in 1953 lamenting the loss of what he described as ‘the most important and significant single house in England’. ‘Now’, he wrote, ‘only X marks the spot where Coleshill once stood’. Visiting the site of the house today on the Trust’s Coleshill estate there remains a palpable sense of the absent building. This thesis engages with the house that continues to exist in the realm of the imagination, and asks how Coleshill is brought to mind not simply through the visual signals that remain on the estate, but also through the mental reckoning resulting from what we know and understand of the house. In particular, this project explores the complexities of how the idea of Coleshill as a canonical work in British architectural histories was created and sustained over time.
