Overview The purpose of this handbook is to give you an overview of the Core Series and Certification Programs: their requirements, logistics, and expectations. We hope that a thorough understanding of our guidelines will make things easy for you and allow you to participate fully in your training. As you read through this handbook, please keep in mind that these requirements and guidelines have been created through time and experience. Our intention is to provide a clear foundation for learning in a safe and vibrant circle that promotes personal and professional development. Admittance Students enrolling in these trainings need to have completed a minimum of 500 hours of health care education or be a licensed professional in one of the following professions: massage/manual therapy, naturopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, midwifery, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, osteopathy or medicine (a license to touch). Enrolling students need to be physically able to complete classes and homework as assigned. Enrolling students need to have practical resources in place (time, financial, emotional, work, family, etc) to fully participate in these programs and to support the personal development work that often accompanies this training. The Craniosacral Introductory Workshop is a prerequisite for entrance into both the Core Series and Certification Programs. Overview of the Core Series The Core Series establishes the foundation for Craniosacral work. It provides instruction and practice in the fundamental skills of stillness and presence, as well as hands-on techniques, anatomy and methodology of this work. Students learn to perceive the cranial wave, mid-tide, and long tide. They learn to use the tides fluidly to address localized as well as systemic conditions and client concerns. Students practice activities to develop their communication skills, intuition, clinical reasoning and ability to perceive the client’s overall healing process. Students complete the Core Series as a cohort, developing bonds that allow them to explore this work deeply and safely. Students receive a certificate of completion upon satisfying the requirements of the program. This 8 to 10-month training consists of: 4 Core classes, each 28 hours over 4 days (112 hours) 4 Integration Days, each 7 hours long (28 hours) 45 Client practice sessions, logged (90 hours) 2 two-way exchanges with fellow students between each Core class (6 total; 9 hours) Required reading between classes Total of 140 in-class clock hours Prerequisite: Craniosacral Introductory Workshop or by permission of the teacher. Crafted Touch – Craniosacral Therapy: Student Handbook, 2/20 3 Overview of the Certification Program The Certification Program is expressly designed for students who want to dedicate themselves to developing Craniosacral therapy as a primary modality in their practice. It offers highly focused, in-depth training with the exploration, supervision, and feedback necessary for students to establish a successful Craniosacral practice. Being certified also allows the practitioner to market themselves with a tangible credential. Upon certification, with their permission, Crafted Touch lists practitioners on

There are now a number of branches and streams of this therapeutic bodywork in the world. A good number of anthroposophic physicians and therapists have been drawn to and trained in this work, which is deeply connected to rhythm and the etheric body. This article describes the connection between Anthroposophic Medicine and cranio-sacral theory and practice. History The origin of cranio-sacral research can be traced as far back as 1744, to writings on occult physiology by Emmanuel Swedenborg. In his text “The Brain” Swedenborg describes a “…pulsating spirituous fluid animating the cerebrospinal fluid that in turn animates the entire body”, 1744 So one could say that Craniosacral Therapy (CST) has a root in the traditions of European Christian mysticism. In America the two grandfathers of Osteopathy Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917) and William Garner Sutherland (1873-1954) developed the therapeutic forms from which this modern practice has evolved. They were both deeply spiritual men who often spoke of the divine realm in metaphors - ‘the great architect’ and ‘the breath of life’. The movement of the cranial bones was first studied by Sutherland. It is likely that he had read Swedenborg. The work was then developed and held in a small circle emerging out of a spiritual stream of the osteopathic profession around 1930-50.

Craniosacral Therpy, also called CST, or cranial osteopathy, it is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. As decribed by the Cranial Therapy Center, CST theory and practice is based on understanding the continuous subtle movements of the cranial bones, which result in a rhythm of approximately six to twelve cycles per minute. This rhythm is understood as a response to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fluctuations within the spinal cord and brain environment. The subtle movement extends outward to the entire body, in response to the fluid pressure changes around the Central Nervous System. A therapist gently works with the whole body including the spine and the skull, and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia. By using the hands as fine discriminating tools, Craniosacral therapists are able to detect disturbances in the cranial sacral rhythm to help them identify areas of dysfunction, such as cranial, sutural, membrane and other soft tissue restrictions in the body.     Manual Therapies Several types of manual therapy are used at OTA The Koomar Center (OTA) as part of an individual’s intervention program. These techniques include but are not limited to craniosacral therapy, myofascial release, and massage. Occupational therapists, physical therapists, and other health care practitioners use manual therapies to help the body utilize its own healing abilities to balance body functions. Craniosacral therapy was originated by Dr. John Upledger, who identified as a body system the membranes and fluid that surround the brain and spinal cord. The system extends from the head (cranium) to the “tail” (sacrum) giving the treatment its name. Myofascial release is another soft tissue manipulation technique involving relaxation and realignment of the fascia, or tissues covering the muscles. All manual therapies utilized at OTA are hands-on, gentle, non-intrusive techniques that resemble a gentle massage, and are most often experienced as calming and relaxing. The effects of manual therapies vary from person to person, but results can include increased comfort and generalized calm, decreased pain and muscular tension, improved motor function, increased organization, and improved tolerance for sensory stimulation. Many therapists at OTA specialize in manual therapies and routinely use these techniques as an integral part of therapy sessions. Sessions specifically devoted to manual therapy are also offered and are typically 30-45 minutes in length.
