Purpose: To describe CAM use in children and adolescents with ASDs in southern Alberta. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of parents. Results: The response rate was 50.3% (176/350). The majority of children were male (83.5%), and diagnosed with classic autism (52.8%). The mean age was 8.9 years. The majority of children (93.8%) had used CAM, most commonly vitamins and minerals (63.1%), mind-body therapies (51.7%), and dietary-nutritional therapies (45.5%). The mean number of types of CAM used was 9.6. The main reason parents used CAM was to improve autistic symptoms in their children. The mean amount spent on CAM was almost $3,000. Most physicians were felt by parents to know about their use of CAM, but the majority of parents felt that they volunteered this information. Roughly one third of both family physicians and pediatricians were perceived to be encouraging of CAM use. Conclusion: The use of CAM in children and adolescents with ASDs is very common, and highlights the need for further research with respect to efficacy, side effects and health policy for these therapies. iii Acknowledgements I would like to acknowledge contributions from the following people and organizations which made this project possible.     Anthroposophic Craniosacral Therapy International Anthroposophic Network for CST 12 co-workers from Europe, UK, USA, Russia and Australia Craniosacral Therapy (CST) - cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Introduction: The last 50 years has seen a growing appreciation of the therapeutic potential of both Cranial Osteopathy (as practiced by Osteopaths) and Craniosacral Therapy (as practiced by non - Osteopaths). There are now a number of branches and streams of this therapeutic bodywork in the world. A good number of anthroposophic physicians and therapists have been drawn to and trained in this work, which is deeply connected to rhythm and the etheric body. This article describes the connection between Anthroposophic Medicine and cranio-sacral theory and practice. History The origin of cranio-sacral research can be traced as far back as 1744, to writings on occult physiology by Emmanuel Swedenborg. In his text “The Brain” Swedenborg describes a “…pulsating spirituous fluid animating the cerebrospinal fluid that in turn animates the entire body”, 1744 So one could say that Craniosacral Therapy (CST) has a root in the traditions of European Christian mysticism. In America the two grandfathers of Osteopathy Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917) and William Garner Sutherland (1873-1954) developed the therapeutic forms from which this modern practice has evolved. They were both deeply spiritual men who often spoke of the divine realm in metaphors - ‘the great architect’ and ‘the breath of life’. The movement of the cranial bones was first studied by Sutherland. It is likely that he had read Swedenborg. The work was then developed and held in a small circle emerging out of a spiritual stream of the osteopathic profession around 1930-50.

Craniosacral Therpy, also called CST, or cranial osteopathy, it is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. As decribed by the Cranial Therapy Center, CST theory and practice is based on understanding the continuous subtle movements of the cranial bones, which result in a rhythm of approximately six to twelve cycles per minute.     Manual Therapies Several types of manual therapy are used at OTA The Koomar Center (OTA) as part of an individual’s intervention program. These techniques include but are not limited to craniosacral therapy, myofascial release, and massage. Occupational therapists, physical therapists, and other health care practitioners use manual therapies to help the body utilize its own healing abilities to balance body functions. Craniosacral therapy was originated by Dr. John Upledger, who identified as a body system the membranes and fluid that surround the brain and spinal cord. The system extends from the head (cranium) to the “tail” (sacrum) giving the treatment its name. Myofascial release is another soft tissue manipulation technique involving relaxation and realignment of the fascia, or tissues covering the muscles. All manual therapies utilized at OTA are hands-on, gentle, non-intrusive techniques that resemble a gentle massage, and are most often experienced as calming and relaxing. The effects of manual therapies vary from person to person, but results can include increased comfort and generalized calm, decreased pain and muscular tension, improved motor function, increased organization, and improved tolerance for sensory stimulation. Many therapists at OTA specialize in manual therapies and routinely use these techniques as an integral part of therapy sessions. Sessions specifically devoted to manual therapy are also offered and are typically 30-45 minutes in length.
