Hi, I am new to this list and wondered if anyone knows of any lists of employees at the Troy shirt factories at the turn of the century?

My grandmother came here from Ireland in 1900 and worked as a collar stitcher in one of the factories. Her name was Mary Gallagher and her sister Sabina came here in 1903, but I don't have any other information on her. Mary lived on third street with a cousin named Campbell. If there were any shirt factories near there, then she probably worked in one of them.

I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you Barbara

I would think Cluett Peabody would be the shirt factory. Some history of this company can be found at : http://www.techvalleytimes.homestead.com/Oct04-RCHS.html

There were several companies in the area that made shirts & collars. They are listed in a book called "Industrial Advantages of Troy, NY and Environs by the Citizens Association of Troy, 1895 (James P. McKinney, publisher, Rochester, NY). I was doing look-ups for the list in this book a couple of weeks ago, but I have since returned it to the library. It is available via interlibrary loan, and is also available at the Troy Public Library.

The meeting is Thurs. May 19 @ Troy City Hall. Some have expressed an interest in dinner first, and I would like to suggest Fresno's at 5:15 or so, then the meeting could start at 6:30, at City Hall. Is that acceptable to the local members who plan to attend? (I work better when I'm not hungry, and it's too late for me to dine after the meeting.)

Those who cannot make the early dinner could plan to go out after the meeting.

He was a native of South Troy, but the interesting tidbit in his obit , was the funeral mass at St. Joseph's & was conducted by Rev. Elmer J. Donnelly of Pinehurst, North Carolina ,listed as a cousin in one newspaper and a relative in another of the deceased. I have never come across Donnelly's in my family before. He was unmarried so it's got to be related to him. Did a little research on Elmer and he lived at 443 3rd

1900,1910,1920 and 1930 census at 443 3rd Street, any connections?

This message being sent to the TIGS List and the Rensselaer County List.

Recently the Troy Irish Genealogy Society announced that a new data base of 6,000 plus death records was being put on line and that all 6,000 records would be done by the end of May. In case you have not checked back at the web site since that announcement, ALL records are now on-line.

The direct link that takes you right to these records is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/Project-BurdenDeathRecordsPage.htm

While the records, which are not limited to Irish surnames, are mainly in the Troy, NY, area, there are some from all over the country. A quick scan of the death records for surnames beginning with A, B and C. showed that while the bulk of the records were in the Albany- Rensselaer-Schenectady-Saratoga Counties, there are many records that cover towns and cities throughout the entire area of New York State.

In addition to Canada and England being mentioned in the data base, deaths in the following states were listed:

Colorado Connecticut Georgia Illinois Iowa Indiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Missouri Montana Nebraska New Jersey New Mexico Ohio Pennsylvania Vermont Washington, DC Wisconsin

Keep in mind that the above items cover only the first THREE letters of the alphabet. The balance of the records will cover many additional states and foreign countries.

This user friendly name searchable data base can benefit researchers throughout New York State and the rest of the country.

22 Also after doing a name search, browse the text fields as there are many other surnames (relatives, in-laws, friends) mentioned.

I opened up a new section to the Troy webpage of my website that is interactive. I put all the 1875 NYS census records that I have accumulated on line plus added a form where others can add to database with records they have accumulated while doing their family research. As most know, the NYS censuses are still hard to search since they are not indexed and not on line, like the federal censuses. So, in the interest of helping others who may not be able to access the NYS census films, we can all contribute the bits and pieces that we have collected. This is the 3rd NYS census I have on my website. I have always found the genealogy community a wonderful place because of all the help I have received from complete strangers plus the unselfish sharing of information. Hopefully, you will take the time to give back to others and share some of the census data you have collected.

On a personal note, I have had a good year with connecting with Flynn, Campbell and O'Connor cousins. All have found me on line through the Rootsweb mailing lists, boards, World Connect and the various internet surname registries. With each connection, I have unlocked some of my genealogical mysteries. I urge you all to check out the various internet resources and get your inform ation online, especially the WorldConnect trees. You just never know who will see it and help you knock down some of your brick walls.

So far, I have sister and brother, Bridget (my ggrandmother) and Hugh in Troy, St Joseph's Parish. Two sisters (Mary, Ann) ended u p in Worchester MA, one by way of Providence RI. Brother James ended up in Akron OH. Hugh was in Goshen in 1870 before moving to Troy. There were a number of Flynns in South Troy at the same time, some living right next door to Hugh. As of yet, I haven't been able to connect them but my guess is they are connected. Their parents names are Bridget and John Flynn, possibly from County Leix/Laois, according to the 1870 census. However, a new found cousin from Ohio has another county so we are still checking our sources.

I am passing this on to anyone living in the Long Island area...

This is Charlie McKenna and I am the founder of the Slainte Irish Festival. We are looking for volunteers to help out with the upcoming Slainte Irish Festival in Patchogue, NY on June 3rd, 4th and 5th. We especially need some help right now putting up posters all over the tri- state area announcing the event. If you are interested in helping please visit the website and sign up as a volunteer.

We also need you to continue doing the great job of passing the word to everyone you know about the festival. The more you pass the word and get people to visit our website the more money we save on marketing. This is money that goes towards bringing you the top entertainers on the Irish Music scene today.

Don't take my word for it, go online and check out all of the other Irish Festivals in the country and you will see a few "headline" acts. At the Slainte Irish Festival EVERY act is a headliner. We spare no expense to bring you the very best Irish Festival in the world.

Our goal, you should know, is to eventually purchase a very large parcel of land near the Long Island Expressway and turn it into the Slainte Irish Festival Cultural Center. It would be the permanent home of the Irish Festival and we could make the place available to other cultural groups to celebrate their own rich heritage.

Take a moment and log back on to the website at www.LongIslandIrishFest.com

We have added a banner advising visitors who plan to stay for the evening events to bring a jacket or sweater. The temperature is typically cooler on the South Shore compared to the North Shore. Many of you came to visit our festival in Port Jefferson which is on the North Shore. This is especially important since the festival is directly on the shores of the Great South Bay!

The performance schedule has been posted on the website a www.LongIslandIrishFest.com

It's this Thursday @ 6:30 at City Hall. It's posted on the website. Those who can are meeting for dinner first around 5:15-5:30 @ Fresno's on River St. (just after you cross the Green Island bridge to Troy, go to the right).

If you are going to the restaurant, please post to the list so we know how many to expect.

Thanks,

Donna

Thanks, Donna.

I'll have internet access when in Troy and will most certainly cry out if need be.

I plan on visiting the Historical Society as one of my great uncles by marriage was Maj. Gen. Joseph B. Carr and his residence was incorporated into the museum. Then there is the cemetery and public library as well as the State Library. Family myth has it that the first MITER arrived with the British at Saratoga and I have never been to the battlefield. As my grgrandfather Lt. George GOULD (Irish) served as aide-de-camp to his brother-in-law from the start of the Civil War through the battle of Chancellorsville, I would also like to see the military museum in Saratoga Springs. George is buried in an unmarked grave in Seneca, KS and I want to see about the possibility of getting a government tombstone placed at his widow's gravesite.

So, I think I have enough to keep me going.

Would it help if we all snail mailed the pastor of St Michael's, asking him to reconsider? Maybe if he understood that many of us, some 3,000 miles away, have ancestors whose records he considers his, aren't the records also ours? However, I don't believe if he allowed you to copy the records, that you should charge us exorbitant charges to buy the records.

Pat, It is the American-Canadian Genealogical Society which is doing the printing of the transcriptions. For the purpose of the copies is for many volunteers to do transcriptions. For a complete list of the churches that ACGS has transcribed and made available for sale can be found at _http://www.acgs.org_ (http://www.acgs.org ) I bought one of St. Joseph's Marriages in Schenectady and to me the price was well worth it because of the information I gleaned from the book.

Well, Ruth, from what I see in California, they are using volunteers to do the work for free. Check out the below prices. I don't think they are reasonable. How much are they going to charge for St Joseph's Records? CDs only cost a dollar. Since most of the St Joseph's volunteers are TIGS members, are they allowing TIGS to put the records on line on the TIGS website? No, I doubt it.

RP046 St-Columba, Schenectady, NY Marriages (1908-1974) $45.00 RP047 St-Joseph, Cohoes, NY 4453 Marriages (18 Oct 1867 - 30 May 1999) Two Volumes $99.00 RP048 Our Lady of Grace, Ballston Lake, NY 1338 Marriages (Sep 1922-Jul 1999) 2548 Baptisms (Nov 1922-Jul 1999) 326 Burials (Nov 1924-Jun 1999) $45.00 RP049 St-George, Albany, NY 876 Baptisms (Apr 1917 - Dec 1998) 233 Marriages (Aug 1917 - Aug 1996) 398 Burials (Mar 1917 - Feb 1989) $25.00 RP050 St-Jean Baptiste, Troy, NY 1677 Marriages (15 Aug 1852 - 31 Dec 1970) Burials (Oct 1875 - 31 Dec 1970) $45.00 RP051 St-Jean Baptiste, Troy, NY 5961 Baptisms (Aug 1852 - Dec 1970) $43.00

Well Pat, Fro m here in Utah I paid $47 for the St. Joseph's/Schenectady Marriage book. And it has far more info in it than does the novel for which I now pay $7.95. They also have many other publications of records far cheaper than the ones you listed. Maybe it's more pages raises the price?

I am currently working on transcribing Our Lady of Angels church baptisms in Albany. There are many churches who won't let folks near their records. Instead they charge $5 for a single record. Twenty family records equals $100. The book is reasonable when one wants a number of records. Since we have a few who are willing to let an organization copy the records should we not do it because the Society might have to pay a director, telephone, electricity and printing costs and charge for the books? The books are also available at the Family History Library, but I don't know if they paid for them or were donated. I first saw the St. Joseph's book at the Schenectady Historical Society and immediately copied the address to write to get a copy of it.

Is TIGS considering copying St. Peter's (Troy) records? I have been e-mailing them for a few months and it is very slow going. I don't blame the folks from the church but I believe I could get better results if I did the searching myself.

Keep in mind that two sets of volumes previously published by the American-Canadian Genealogical Society are available to researchers at the Troy Public Library and the Rensselaer County Historical Society. I suspect both institutions will acquire any future volumes pertaining to churches in the Troy area. Individuals need not purchase the books to have access to the records.

Some of the prices are high - yes. But at least it's being published. And then they are available at libraries and people can do look-ups for others when a copy is purchased. When I first got the St. Joseph's/Schenectady book I put a notice out on the Rootsweb Schenectady book that I would do look-ups.

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the list and wanted to do two things.

One, I have been reading the emails about the ACGS Repetoire's. I have been a volunteer and member of ACGS for the past 9 years. I have helped with various data entry. I just want everyone to know that I would be happy to do "look ups" in the books that I own. Many people over the years have been gracious enough to help me in this regard and I would like to repay that kindness. So these are the books that I have:

St. Patrick's, Troy -- Marriage, Burial & Baptisms

St. Anne, Waterford - Marriage, Burials & Baptisms

Sacred Heart, Schenectady --Marriages

St. Joseph's, Cohoes -- Marriages

St. Jean Baptiste, Troy --Marriages, Burials & Baptisms

Notre Dame des Victories, Whitehall -- Marriages, Burials & Baptisms

I have other books but most are from Northern, NY. Again, I would be happy to do "look ups" just give me some time to respond.

Second, I just wanted to put out a list of names I'm researching.

O'NEILL/O'NEIL, Hugh & Catherine POWERS mar. abt. 1890, li ved in Lansingburgh, members of St. Augustine's.

CORRIGAN, James & Bridget KELLY, lived in Green Island.

GARDNER/GARDINER, Joseph b. about 1860, Canada & Ida BOUSHEA/BUSHEY, b. abt 1869 Troy, d. abt 1934, Troy, lived in Troy?

COMEAU, Marie b. 1899, Cohoes her parents were Eugene COMEAU & Georgianna LEFEBVRE/LEFEVRE/BEAN, members of Sacred Heart Church, Cohoes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Kathy Sweetser

WOW Dear Pat and all TIG members

This is one tough group! I almost regret opening the Pandora's Box for even doing a good thing.

Well, to start with I feel I should not even have to write this note and justify what I do or the ACGS group. But to bring people back to earth and not start a WAR WAR 3 I will write my LAST NOTE IN THE TIG group.

The ACSG has ALWAYS covered any cost of all materials and supplies, if the TIG group is willing to take on the cost of this project I have no problem with giving all the work we copied to date! So far we have used 4 cases of paper @ $33.00 a case not counting the Ink cartridge X3 at $69.00 = $210.00 and most likely we will need at least one more. The printing for one book is now at the cheap price of $900.00 and that is a discount from Kin kos as all records are put into a binder, this also includes a cover. Each book at cost is priced by page, and since we don't print that many books it is at the highest cost. So even before we give the pastor a free book we now have spent an easy $1,700 at the minimum. If a parish is larger it even cost more, as I also forgot the proofreading paper X 3 times as this is how many times we proofread, to make sure we have TOP quality in result. You can ask Kathy Sweetser and Kevin Pemrick two long time volunteers that this took over three years to copy, data enter, proofread and to print and bound this project. Fr Jones was so happy! Sense about three months I have ask for help in doing the troy projects and out of maybe 100 people on your list I've have received only about 5 people in helping with this VERY LARGE PROJECT. But I will say I have received more criticism then any other group I've have ever worked with in the last 11 years of doing this GREAT work.

Pat the ACGS HAS NO ADMINISTRATOR AND IS TOTALLY OPERATING WITH All VOLUNTEERS!!!!!!! This mean no money is paid to anyone. My only goal was for people to be able do there research without a difficult time from a pastor or secretary which we all have encountered from time to time.

As far as St. Michael's goes truthfully I already told you that he SAID NO! NO is NO by everyone sending a note, I'm am sure he will complain to the Bishop and this project will stopped for sure. I have a very good working relationship with the Diocese and hope to continue to do so. In the past when a pastor has said NO I would just wait until he left or moved on and then re-approach the new pastor.

I also want to make note that the 1st 30 parishes I copied, I could not fine ANY ONE to help me! Kevin Pem rick and recently a few very kind and good people from TIG. I make no money on this work and spend about three hours a night writing these unnecessary letters and I will continue to copy and data enter do this work as long as my body can stand and hope th at other will do the same.

64 As far as I can see the TIG group has only done Cemetery records which if you have nothing else to work with this is ok. But these records HAVE very little information! My books that have birth, death, marriages. 2nd marriages, even deaths, 1st communion and confirmations. This beats a grave saying (Molly Reilly died in 1879) There are about 30 Molly Reilly in the Albany area that Died before 1900.

So thank you for you help and God bless on your findings

David L Bonitatibus [email protected]

PS all volenteers who are on my private email list will still get all info on what is going on, please do not forward any of my notes to people in less you ask my permission first! If you know of any persons interested in this project have them contact me thanks a bunch

I also need to make one thing clear

That NO INFORMATION Can at anytime be put on the Internet! This Is against Canon law! ALL INFORMATION Is considered Church property! The ACSG hold all holding and rights to this these books. And have made a promise that all any info will not be put on the Internet. I know a few people like Kathy Sweetser have offered to look up people at no cost and this is no problem, but there can be no selling of any kind on this information to anyone.

Thank You

David

Well, there are certainly cheaper ways to do this, if you want to offer your work to many at low costs. A bunch of us transcribed both the 1880 and 190 0 federal censuses for all of Troy at almost no cost, other than what copying each sheet cost me which was not exorbitant. One just needs to scan each sheet to a file and pass it on attached to an email to the transcribers. Also using a database that is user friendly, like Works/Excel can keep costs down. Putting all info on a cd, rather than a book, also keeps costs down. Yes, printing out a book for the church is nice but not expensive if you are only printing one.

As far as not being able to put the data on line, how are you able to sell it? Same principal. If this is considered Church property, how do you get the right to sell it on your website?

Sorry, you are taking offense. But, I too, take offense at the prices you are charging. Luckily, I got my family info from St. Joseph's years ago but those that haven't, you really haven't made it easier for them if they can't afford to buy your publications. Also, nice they are going to be at the Troy Public Library but that doesn't help people who don't live in the area. Maybe I have my head in the clouds, but since I got into this addiction of genealogy, it has been my goal to get the information out there to as many people as possible to help them with their family history. So many people have helped me unselfishly, that I feel I am just giving back. That is why I started a number of transcription projects plus my website.

So be it.

PS Don't blame TIGS for my words. I take responsibility for them alone.

David I don't think you should take issue with all of the TIGS for the comments of one or two members. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that is what mailing lists are for. Your e-mail explains the cost of producing these books which are very valuable to the genealogy community. Not everyone is going to pay the asking price, but it appears that others do. Not everyone has the time that you have put into going door to door to churchs making connections and convincing the parish of the value of having this information available for genealogists. That is truly appreciated. Please keep in mind that many TIGS members are not local and not available to assist with the copying as they cannot go to the physical location. The TIGS members that do assist should be applauded, as should you for all of the time and effort. I do not see myself purchasing these books, but I certainly see the value to some who will put them to good use as their family trees widen and they discover more surnames to research. Although they are available at the Troy Library and the RCHS as pointed out by Lynn, this does not make them available to everyone unless SKS on the list does a look up for them when they are at those locations. I think as TIGS grows we should, as a group, have a copy of each local book available for look ups. It is my understanding that there is a discount available for those that work on the project, therefore if list members "pony up", to quote a recent lister, we could contribute to the cost given to a volunteer so that TIGS could purchase it making them available outside of business hours. Local members could keep the books in their homes on a rotational basis, perhaps changing monthly at the meetings, that way no member would be "THE" person doing all of the look ups, which could become a time consuming task. My pastor is Father Tom Konopka at St. Michael's Church in Troy. he tells me it is necessary to talk to the Diocese about access to the records in the church. It is not his call because of the confidential nature of the records even from a 100 years ago. Ellen Tolan

ConnorsGenealogy < [email protected] > wrote:> > >St. Mikes is no >The pastor was not to cooperative >

If you have ever made use of the Troy City Directories, you are very familiar with the wealth of information they contain. These books were my introduction to genealogy research when I looked up my great grandfather, Timothy O'Connor and found his date of death as August 8, 1912.

In the older directories, many of which, show the individual's name AND the date of death, you also MAY get:

Address of residence and whether the person is a boarder. Occupation and sometimes work title. Name of employer and sometimes the address of employment. Name of surviving wife. If a widow, name of deceased husband.

The books also have sections covering Watervliet and Green Island as well as Cohoes and Waterford.

At the Troy Library last week, I collected information from the 1902 Directory for all "A" letter surnames just to see how the data would look on an excel spreadsheet so we could determine if this could be a new TIGS project. If anyone would like to see the data for these 24 names, please email me and I will send you the file as an attachment.

This project was discussed at the monthly TIGS meeting on Thursday and it was felt that the data would be very useful in this format for researchers, especially those outside the Troy area. So the question now is - do we have any interested volunteers? Volunteers would need to be near any of the local libraries that may hold Troy City Directories.

Marilyn,

There are NO marriages in the St. Joseph, Cohoes book with the name LEGNARD. Could it be a different spelling?

I did find a marriage in the St. Anne, waterford. Here it is:

Barbara LEGNARD mar. David LEFEBVRE 4 Jun 1982. Bride residence, Green Island. Groom residence, Waterford. Parents of bride, John & Kathleen KELONGTON. Grooms parents, Robert & Jeanne PELLITIER. Bride baptised 16 Apr 1961, St. Joseph, Green Island. Groom baptised 17 Dec 1961, St. Anne, Waterford.

Hello Phil:

In Troy, the City Directories are located at the Troy Library and at the Rensselaer County Historical Society.

At one time the directores were widely distributed and they could be found in banks and other business establisments as well as in lawyer's offices, etc. Hopefully, some of these books are now in private homes.

What other libraries in the Capital Area (Albany-Troy-Schenectady) have them I do not know.

I also believe that some years of the directories are on microfilm.

To the best of my knowledge none of the directories are available online.

Certain years (1914 ,1924, 1930) are available on LDS microfilm; check their website (familysearch.org). If you have an Ancestry.com subscription, the 1890 Troy directory is online. And I think at least one year is available to buy on CD, but I don't recall from where. The actual directories appear from time to time on Ebay.

I've also seen them in the Cohoes Library, Albany Public Library, Colonie (Sanford Library) and The State Library in Albany. They are also in the East Greenbush & the Guilderland libraries. Probably not all years, you would have to check.

I am researching the families of Callahan, Delaney, Waters, Carmody, and Donohue from the Troy area...I believe that they all came over from Ireland around the 1860's, 1870's. Their earliest records begin at St.Joseph's Church, south Troy, and St.Joseph's, Green Island. I would appreciate any tips on how to find their naturalization papers. Green Island is Albany County; have you checked the online database for naturalizations records @ the Albany Co. Hall of Records? http://www.albanycounty.com/achor/

The Renss. Co. ones, as you know, are in the basement of t he county clerk's office on 3rd St. Troy. There are also some on Pat Connor's website. Go to this link for more info: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrensse/natural.htm
