SIGHTSEEINGS Dwarkadheesh Mandir mathura One of the oldest and largest temples of Mathura city. This is a major and famous Hindu shrine, and its current structure was built up by Seth Gokul Das Parikh, the treasurer of then Gwalior State in 1814, with approval and heavy donation from Shrimant Daulatrao Scindia, Maharajah of Gwalior. It was built for the famous Hindu deity Dwarkadheesh. There the main deity is of Lord Dwarkadheesh, a form of Lord Krishna seen in a black marble idol named Dwarkanath. With him is the white marble idol of his counterpart deity goddess Radhika. The Krishna Janmasthan Temple mathura These temples are built around the place where major Hindu deity Krishna was born. The place holds religious significance since the 6th century BC. The temples were destroyed multiple times throughout history, latest by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1670 who erected Eidgah there. In 20th century, the new temple complex was built with the financial help from industrialists containing the Keshavdeva temple, the Garbha Griha temple at the birthplace and the Bhagavata Bhavan. Mathura museum mathura . Government Museum, Mathura commonly referred as Mathura museum is an archaeological museum in Mathura city. Though the old fort presently lies in ruins, in its heyday, it was the home of the demon, Kansa, the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna. The fort is built over a large area and has highly fortified walls. The structure reflects a beautiful blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. This is because the fort passed through several hands during its journey. It is said that Raja Man Singh of Amber renovated the fort in the 16th century while Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur built an observatory there. In the Name of Krishna: The Cultural Landscape of a North Indian Pilgrimage Town A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Sugata Ray IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Frederick M. Asher, Advisor April 2012 © Sugata Ray 2012 Acknowledgements They say writing a dissertation is a lonely and arduous task. But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

Gokul Study Report July 23, 2016 1. Introduction and Background Gokul is a small town in Uttar Pradesh on the east side of the Yamuna River. A general location of Gokul in relation to Mathura and Agra is shown in Figure 1. below. Gokul encompasses a small area of about 2 sq km. Figure 1: Satellite map of Gokul (courtesy of Google Maps) Page 1/11 According to Vedic Scripture, Lord Krishna was brought up under the care of Nanda and Yoshoda, the first family of the village. Since Kangsha, Krishna's uncle, used to kill every baby born to Devaki, Nanda exchanged his own new born daughter with Vasudeva in order to smuggle Krishna away without raising Kangsha's suspicion. During his stay at Gokul, Krishna spent his time in fun and frolic, though his life did come under threat a few times. He was very naughty as a child, and when Krishna was an infant, and the demoness Putana came to the village at the appeal of Kangsha. She laced her nipples with poison and tried to breastfeed Krishna. However, Krishna suckled on her until he completely drained her life away. The river Yamuna used to flow near the village as it still does, and a five-headed serpent known as Kaliya used to live in its waters. Kāliyā was a powerful cobra, who made the river waters poisonous and made the forests barren.
