Not only are they of considerable value to geographers, anthropologists, and historians, but they are now also being used by demog- raphers and economists, and students of folk culture. The Baedeker Handbook(s) for Travellers series began pub- lication in 1828 and has been used by generations of Euro- pean and American travelers. A Baedeker Handbook usually contains elaborate information on buildings, streets, and communities. Many of these have changed beyond recogni- tion or have been destroyed entirely. Considerable attention is also given to regional and local dress, as well as customs, traditions, and holidays. The following bibliography describes the English-language guides published by Baedeker prior to World War II. -

Alexander Conze, On the Origin of the Visual Arts, Lecture held on July 30, 1896 [in the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences] translated and edited by Karl Johns Editor’s introduction: Alexander Conze: The Bureaucrat and Art- Historiography Like a number of his colleagues, Alexander Conze (Hanover December 10, 1831- Berlin July 19, 1914), came to classical archaeology after first studying law. His interests and gifts seem to have tended more toward curatorial and administrative work rather than lecturing, and he will be primarily remembered for his part in bringing the Pergamon Altar to the Berlin museums. It may therefore seem ironic that he nevertheless had a great influence as a teacher and probably the greatest influence in another field, which was only later to be defined and brought to fruition in academia by his students as ‘the history of art.’ For the purposes of art historiography it is therefore significant that after nearly ten years at Halle as Extraordinarius, he was called to the University of Vienna as Ordinarius, taught from 1869 to 1877, where Franz Wickhoff, Alois Riegl, Emanuel Löwy and Julius Schlosser, among others, were influenced by his teachings. In the lectures given by Conze to the Prussian academy later in his career, it is not difficult to recognize a similarity to Schlosser in the binocular attraction of more abstract questions on the one hand and the aesthetic appeal of the individual object on the other. Conze also anticipated and presumably inspired the later studies made by Ernst Garger on the ground in relief sculpture and the historical place of the Monument of the Julii. -

Improving the Representation of Large Landforms in Analytical Relief Shading

Title: Improving the Representation of Large Landforms in Analytical Relief Shading. Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ Bernhard J. Jenny Relief shading is the most common type of cartographic relief representation for print and digital maps. Manual relief shading results in informative and visually pleasing representations of terrain, but it is time consuming and expensive to produce. Current analytical relief shading can be created quickly, but the resulting maps are not as aesthetically appealing and do not show landscape features in an explicit manner. This article introduces an automated digital method that produces shaded relief with locally adjusted illumination directions to simulate the techniques and cartographic principles of manual relief shading. Ridgelines and valley lines are derived from a digital terrain model, vectorized, and used in a diffusion curve algorithm. A graph-based network analysis generalizes the lines before using them for diffusion curve shading. The direction of illumination is adjusted based on the spatial orientation of ridgelines and valley lines. The diffusion curve shading is combined with standard analytical relief shading to create a final shaded relief image. Similar to manual relief shading, major landforms and the structure of the terrain are more clearly shown in the final shaded relief image. The presented method best highlights major landforms in terrain characterized by sharp, clearly defined ridges and valleys. ©Copyright by Brooke E. Geschichte der schweizerischen Kartographie Hans-Peter Höhener und Thomas Klöti In der Geschichte der Kartographie spiegelt sich die politische sowie die Kultur- und Wissenschaftsgeschich- te eines Landes; sie kann deshalb nicht unabhängig davon betrachtet werden. Die Entwicklung der Karto- graphie der Schweiz wurde vor allem durch die Zeitumstände bestimmt und durch die gebirgige Oberflä- chengestalt des Landes beeinflusst. Weil sich bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts das ganze staatliche Le- ben in den einzelnen Kantonen abspielte, gab es praktisch auch nur eine aus diesen hervorgehende Karto- graphie, die zudem weitgehend auf privater Initiative beruhte. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert, vor allem mit dem Übergang vom Staatenbund zum Bundesstaat, wurde die Kartographie eine gesamtschweizerische Angele- genheit. Dabei blieb die Tätigkeit der einzelnen Kantone und privater Personen immer noch wichtig. Als die Kartographen versuchten, das Gebirge kartographisch zu erfassen, waren sie gezwungen, neue Formen der Geländedarstellung zu entwickeln. Die Kartenherstellung bewegte sich im Spannungsfeld von Kartenkunst und Kartentechnik. Die ersten Kartenmacher im 16. Jahrhundert waren hauptberuflich Arzt, Pfarrer, Glasma- ler usw. Im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert professionalisierte sich die Kartenherstellung durch das allmähliche Aufkommen von Feldmessern und Kriegsingenieuren sowie durch die immer ausgeprägtere Arbeitsteilung bei der Herstellung von Karten. Die frühesten Darstellungen Altertum und Mittelalter Erste kartographische Darstellungen der Schweiz finden sich auf der Tabula Peutingeriana, einem römi- schen Routen-Distanzschema, und in den Ptolemaeus-Handschriften, in denen die Schweiz ganz oder teil- weise auf den Karten für Gallien, Germanien und Italien zu finden ist.
