Office Hymn: 129 – O Christ, our hope, our heart’s desire

Psalm 24, sung to a chant by Sir George Thalben-Ball The earth is the Lord's, and all that therein is: the compass of the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas: and prepared it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord: or who shall rise up in his holy place? Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart: and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, nor sworn to deceive his neighbour. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord: and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of them that seek him: even of them that seek thy face, O Jacob. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory: it is the Lord strong and mighty, even the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory: even the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Gloria Patri

The First Lesson: Isaiah Chapter 44, Verses 1 to 8 The Reader says: Here begins the First Verse of the Forty-Fourth Chapter of the Prophecy of Isaiah. But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen! Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you in the womb and will help you: Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon your descendants, and my blessing on your offspring. They shall spring up like a green tamarisk, like willows by flowing streams. This one will say, ‘I am the LORD’s’, another will be called by the name of Jacob, yet another will write on the hand, ‘The LORD’s’, and adopt the name of Israel. Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let them proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me. Who has announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is yet to be. Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides me? There is no other rock; I know not one. The Reader says: Here ends the First Lesson

Magnificat – Lang in E flat

The Second Lesson Ephesians Chapter 4, Verses 7 to 16 The Reader says: Here begins the Seventh Verse of the Fourth Chapter of the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said, ‘When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people.’

(When it says, ‘He ascended’, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.)

The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love. The Reader says: Here ends the Second Lesson

Nunc dimittis – Lang in E flat

FOCUS ON: PRAYER

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have taken an unprecedented step of writing to every serving parish priest in the Church of inviting them and the people in their parishes to join in a week of prayer for the evangelisation of our nation. In this week leading to Pentecost (May 8 – 15) they long to see great waves of prayer throughout the country.

Their hope is - for all Christians to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ - for all of us to have confidence to share the Gospel - for all to respond to the call of Jesus Christ to follow Him as disciples, to live out the Gospel and to seek God’s Kingdom from day to day

They say, “At the heart of our prayers will be the words that Jesus Christ taught us – ‘Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.’ It is impossible to overstate the life-transforming power of the Lord’s Prayer. It is a prayer that is reassuring enough to be on the lips of the dying and yet dangerous enough to be banned in cinemas. It is famous enough to be spoken each day by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ. It is simple enough to be memorised by small children and yet profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer. When we pray it with sincerity and joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to his glory.”

There is more information about this available on the website www.thykingdom.co.uk as well as a variety of ideas and resources to inspire and help us. You could also look at the Church of England website.

I wonder what it will mean for each of us if we take up this challenge and pray. What difference will it make to our lives?
