Introduction The 2015 general election looks to be the closest and least predictable in living memory, and immigration is a key issue at the heart of the contest. With concerns about the economy slowly receding as the financial crisis fades into memory, immigration has returned to the top of the political agenda, named by more voters as their most pressing political concern than any other issue1. Widespread anxiety about immigration has also been a key driver behind the surge in support for UKIP, though it is far from the only issue this new party is mobilizing around2. Much attention has been paid to the voters most anxious about immigration, and what can be done to assuage their concerns. Yet amidst this fierce debate about whether, and how, to restrict immigration, an important electoral voice has been largely overlooked: that of migrants themselves. CHASE Residents’ Association Via: www.chaseresidents.org.uk CHASE Residents’ Association submission to the Local Government Boundary Commission for England’s consultation on proposed changes to ward boundaries within the London Borough of Croydon We wish to draw the Commission’s attention to difficulties that would be posed by putting into practice draft recommendations for changes to ward boundaries within the Addiscombe area of Croydon Central. We propose an alternative re-drawing of boundaries, a position we believe is in keeping with the views of a number of neighbouring residents’ associations and individuals. Established communities The notional boundaries of the “community” of Addiscombe are distinct from the present electoral ward of Addiscombe in that the community includes a sizeable part of the present Ashburton Ward. Addiscombe Road forms the southern boundary, in both electoral and community terms, for both wards. Residents of Fairfield Ward to the south do not identify with the community of Addiscombe. Within the current electoral wards of Addiscombe and Ashburton there is a more distinct community-based division between: • The western end, where residents living near East Croydon Station gravitate towards shops, schools, churches and facilities in the area between Cherry Orchard Road and Clyde Road. • The eastern side, where the Lower Addiscombe Road is the main district centre serving a community extending from east of Ashburton Park to Elgin Road to the west. Difficulties presented by the proposed boundaries Creating the proposed new wards of Addiscombe West & Park Hill and Addiscombe East by imposing an arbitrary border between Addiscombe/Ashburton and extending these wards south of Addiscombe Road would include areas with no natural affinity with Addiscombe. -
Understanding Governments Attitudes to Social Housing
Understanding Government’s Attitudes to Social Housing through the Application of Politeness Theory Abstract This paper gives a brief background of housing policy in England from the 2010 general election where David Cameron was appointed Prime Minister of a Coalition government with the Liberal Democrats and throughout the years that followed. The study looks at government attitudes towards social housing from 2015, where David Cameron had just become Prime Minister of an entirely Conservative Government, to 2018 following important events such as Brexit and the tragic Grenfell Tower fire. Through the application of politeness theory, as originally put forward by Brown & Levinson (1978, 1987), the study analysis the speeches of key ministers to the National Housing Summit and suggests that the use of positive and negative politeness strategies could give an idea as to the true attitudes of government. This guide has been updated to reflect the changes. The Conservative government does not have a parliamentary majority of MPs but has a confidence and supply deal with the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). The DUP will support the government in key votes, such as on the Queen's Speech and Budgets, as well as Brexit and security matters, which are likely to dominate most of the current Parliament. London Borough of Croydon Habitat Action Plan Woodlands and Hedgerows “One impulse from a vernal wood may teach you more of man, of moral, evil and of good, than all the sagas can. Aims • To conserve and enhance Croydon’s Woodlands and hedgerows for the benefit of biodiversity and for both current and future generations of people. • To promote, maintain and improve the active involvement by all sections of the community in the enjoyment, use and conservation of Croydon’s woodlands and hedgerows 1 2. Introduction Woodlands and hedgerows are an important element in the natural environment of the Borough. They provide opportunities for recreation, health and well being, are a valued component of the landscape, an essential habitat for wildlife, provide employment, contribute to the supply of timber and are an effective means of absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Much woodland is identified as being ‘ancient woodland’ (that which has been in existence since at least 1600); they are described as `semi-natural’ because the woodlands have received past management. They represent the most important woodland habitats for wildlife, sometimes containing species of national rarity. The majority of woods are comprised of broad-leaved species, although some coniferous plantations exist. The Great Storm of 1987 had a widespread impact on trees and woodlands throughout the Borough; it also brought many benefits, including a profusion of deadwood habitats, the rebirth of woodland management and an increase in public involvement and interest to better manage Croydon’s woods for now and for future generations. 3. Current status Woodland is the second most extensive natural habitat found in London. -

I have also held 15 street stalls on Saturday mornings on high streets around the constituency in the past 8 months and met with hundreds of local residents. The first item below is about the appalling service offered by Southern Rail. I am hosting a public meeting with them on 24 th May – please do come along if you can. Southern Rail Public Meeting Southern Rail has been one of the biggest issues facing our neighbourhood for some time. The constant delays have plighted commuters and leisure travellers alike. I have been complaining to Ministers, Southern and Network Rail and it is now time for residents to get a chance to hear from the train companies directly. To this end, I am hosting a public meeting on 24 th May at 7.30pm at Purley United Reform Church (in the hall). This is at 906 Brighton Road, Purley CR8 2LN, next to the hospital. There is no parking on site, so people driving are advised to use the multi-storey or the pay & display hospital car park. -

To the Rt Hon Merlyn Rees, HP Secretary of State for the Home Department PROPOSALS FOR THE FUTURE ELECTORAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE LONDON BOROUGH OF CROYDON 1. We, the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, having carried out a review of the electoral arrangements for the London Borough of Croydon in accordance with the requirements of section 50(3) of the Local Government Act 1972, present bur proposals for the future electoral arrangements for that London borough. 2. In accordance with the procedure laid down in section 60(1) and (2) of the 1972 Act, notice was given on 10 June 1975 that we were to undertake this review. This was incorporated in a consultation letter addressed to the Croydon Borough Council, copies of which were circulated to the London Boroughs Association, the Association of Metropolitan Authorities, the Members of Parliament for the constituencies concerned, the headquarters of the main political parties and the Greater London Regional Council of the Labour Party. Copies were also sent to the editors of local newspapers circulating in the area and of the local government press. Notices inserted in the local press announced the start of the review and invited comments from members of the public and from any interested bodies. 3* Croydon Borough Council were .invited to prepare a draft scheme of representation for our consideration. In doing so, they were asked to observe the rules laid down in Schedule 11 to the Local Government Act 1972 and the guidelines which we set out in our letter of 10 June 1975 about the proposed size of the council and the proposed number of councillors for each ward. -
