Leo Belovarsky LOGLINE Säljande presentation Av: Leo Belovarsky LOGLINE A man named Anthony “Tony” Soprano is the hot headed and violent mafia boss who rules the New Jersey- based on the DiMeo family. The series begins with he, after years of stress over his mafia business and his traumatic upbringing that eventually leads to panic attacks, begins to go to therapy sessions with psychologist Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco), in the greatest secret as he cannot prove weak to his men. This series is pretty raw, intense and sometimes racist, but there are a lot of scenes with humor and then it shows how family everyday life and so on. SYNOPSIS When Tony Soprano collapses after suffering a panic attack, he begins therapy with Dr. Jennifer Melfi. Details of Tony's upbringing - with his father's influence looming large on his development as a gangster, but more so that Tony's mother, Livia, was vengeful and possibly psychopathic - are revealed. His complicated relationship with his wife Carmela is also explored, as well as her feelings regarding her husband's cosa nostra ties. Meadow and Anthony Jr., Tony's children, gain increasing knowledge of their father's mob dealings. Later, federal indictments are brought as a result of someone in his organization talking to the FBI. Inspiration MÖTER MÖTER Anthony “Tony” Soprano Huvudkaraktär Tony Soprano is the hot headed and violent mafia boss who rules the new jersey, when he does not have the role of mafia boss, he usually goes to his psychologist and tells about his problems that he has with the family or other things etc. Adding to Tony's complicated life is his relationship with his wife Carmela which is strained by his constant infidelity and her struggle to reconcile the reality of Tony's business, of which she is often in denial, with the affluent lifestyle and higher social status it brings her. Both have up-and-down relationships with their two children: the intelligent-but-rebellious Meadow and underachiever Anthony Jr. ("A.J.") whose everyday teenage issues are further complicated by their eventual knowledge of their father's criminal activities and reputation. Carmela Soprano Huvudkaraktär Carmela was Tony Soprano's high school sweetheart, and the couple married at a young age. They have two children together: Meadow Soprano and Anthony "A.J." Soprano, Jr. Carmela attended Montclair State University for an unspecified period of time before dropping out. Carmela is a homemaker for the Soprano household, and works to create a semblance of legitimacy for her family even though she is well aware their wealth is built on "blood money". Tony's work and constant infidelity have put a serious strain on the marriage and cause a period of separation. Carmela is an observant Roman Catholic and has difficulty rationalizing her husband's profession and the flaws in their marriage. Tony and Carmela often reconcile after Tony presents her with expensive gifts, notably jewelry, designer clothing, furs, cars, and even a $600,000 plot of land she wants to build a spec house on. Christopher Moltisanti Huvudkaraktär Christopher Moltisanti is a relative of Carmela Soprano, but Tony loves him as if he were his son. He is called Chris or Chrissy and becomes a member of the DiMeo family in the third season of the series. I the fourth season kills Chris, at the behest of Tony, the police officer who shot his far, Dickie Moltisanti, to death. He abuses drugs and alcohol, but tries to be clean. Christopher is very grateful that Tony looks up to him but sometimes he experiences that Tony treats him like he is still a little kid and that he doesn't fit into certain things and so on. For example, some meetings he may not attend because he thinks he can ruin the mood or something else. TON The show highlights various hard-hitting topics such as PTSD, depression, murder, cancer, sexuel harassment, organized crime, domestic violence, family estrangement, suicide and drug and alcohol abuse. This series is ideal for adults as it is quite raw jokes and extreme graphic raw executions with very brutal violence. This series is not for the faint of heart. But what is present with this series is that there is a lot about social problems with friends and family and how intense some scenes are. In this case, a widely admired broadcaster’s revelation probably helped reduce the stigma of psychiatric illness. But last year Hollywood celebs Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields debated the merits of antidepressant therapy for postpartum depression. That highly publicized exchange—he on the “con” side, she on the “pro”—certainly raised public awareness of depression in new mothers, but its effects on psychiatry’s image might have been more negative than positive. And what do we make of actress Lorraine Bracco, who plays a psychiatrist on the HBO TV series, The Sopranos? Her character, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, treats mobster Tony Soprano’s panic attacks but not his, well, antisocial traits. Speaking at last year’s American Psychiatric Association meeting, Bracco stated that “in real life, I’m actually someone who has suffered from depression and had to seek the help of a psychiatrist.” So we have a real patient portraying a psychiatrist treating an imaginary patient and then lecturing to real psychiatrists.

It argues that women in these texts function as an “absent presence,” by which I mean that they are a convention of the patriarchal gangster landscape and often with little import while at the same time they cultivate resistant strategies from within this backgrounded positioning. Whereas previous scholarly work on gangster texts has identified how women are characterized as stereotypes, this dissertation argues that women characters frequently employ the marginal positions to which they are relegated for empowering effect. This dissertation begins by surveying existing gangster scholarship. There is a preoccupation with male characters in this work, as is the case in most gangster texts themselves.
