Recommended Weekend Excursions Around New Hampshire by newsdesk Camping and Hiking Bear Brook State Park : Located in Allentown, it is open early May through mid-October for camping. The park offers camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, biking, picnicking, snow mobiling and cross country skiing. Crawford Notch State Park's Dry River Campground : It is open year round for day use and mid-May through early December for camping. There are picnic tables, a snack bar and a gift shop for convenience. The park offers camping, hiking, fishing and picnicking. Crawford Notch is the site of the historic Willey House. The Willey House was built to serve people traveling between settlements. A landslide in 1828 roared down Mt. Willey sweeping everything in its path, except for the house. Everyone was killed supposedly when they ran to safety. In 1898 the house burned down. Franconia Notch State Park Lafayetter Place Campground : Located off Franconia Notch Parkway, it is open from early May through early October. The park offers camping, hiking (easy access to the Appalachian Trail), biking, swimming, and fishing. Monadnock State Park at Mt. Monadnock : Located in Jaffery, it is open year round. The park offers camping, hiking and picnicking, however Mt. Monadnock is primarily known as a mecca for hikers. It is one of the most frequently climbed mountains in the world. In the winter its use expands to include cross country skiing. Pillsbury State Park : Located in Washington, it is open early May through Columbus Day. The park offers camping, fishing, picnicking, hiking and some mountain biking. Hunting and fishing Bedell Bridge Historic Site : Site of historic second longest two-span covered bridge in country. The Burr-tuss bridge connecting NH to VT was destroyed by wind in 1979. The bridge is no longer there but the site is a great place for picnicking or fishing. Coleman State Park and Campground : Coleman State Park lies on the shore of Little Diamond Pond in Stewartstown, twelve miles east of Colebrook in New Hampshire's remote north country. The excellent trout fishing in Little Diamond Pond and nearby streams makes Coleman an excellent location for fishing enthusiasts. Other activities offered at the park include hiking, canoeing, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing. Mollidgewock State Park and Campground : Mollidgewock State Park lies along the shore of the Androscoggin River. The Androscoggin offers great canoeing and kayaking opportunities. The area is a favorite of fishing enthusiasts and is popular for watching moose and other wildlife. Rye Harbor State Park (Ragged Neck) : Scenic views of ocean and Rye Harbor. Picnic with ocean breezes. East region headquarters located within the park. Offers saltwater fishing. Odiorne Point State Park : Odiorne Point is the largest undeveloped stretch of shore on New Hampshire's eighteen mile coast. Odiorne offers an extensive array of habitats. On the south end of the park, sheltered tidepools of the Sunken Forest give way to an exposed rocky shore. Just north, the shore evolves into a pebble beach which shelters a fresh water marsh. Along the way to Frost Point where a jetty extends into Little Harbor, lies a small sand dune environment. At the end of Little Harbor, Seavey Creek feeds the neighboring salt marsh. Extensive inland disturbances during World War II induced the growth of dense forests in various stages of succession. Large stone walls bound open fields. Fresh water systems are represented within the park by a man-made pond and marsh. Remnants of formal gardens and wildflowers grow side by side; and the man-made military bunkers lie hidden under mounds of earth.
