The tomb of , the second Mughal emperor, was built between 1526 and 1571 by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyuath under the instructions of Humayun’s grieving widow, Hamida Banu Begum. The oldest garden-tomb in the Indian sub-continent, it is the first example of the Persian influence on Indian architecture. It houses more than 1000 graves, which has led to it being called ‘the dormitory of the Mughals.’ It houses the tombs of the , Jahandar Shah and Farrukh Siyar, and also of Darah Sikoh- Shahjahan’s murdered son. The tomb is a protected monument, which means that defacing it in any way would cost you Rs. 5000 or three months in prison. It is on the World Heritage List, and recognized internationally as a monument that deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity. A massive restoration process was carried out over four years to ensure that the maintenance of the tomb met international standards. Between the years 2000 and 2003, the Agha Khan Trust for Culture, in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of , carried out a project to revitalise the 30-acre garden and the monument itself. The tomb is located near the shrine of an important Sufi Saint, Nizamuddin Auliya. It is considered auspicious to be burried near the tomb of a saint, and there are various other monuments outside the main tomb.
