Young This dissertation examines the causes, context, and legacies of the 1927-1928 Colorado coal strike in relationship to the history of labor organizing and coalmining in both Colorado and the United States. While historians have written prolifically about the Ludlow Massacre, which took place during the 1913- 1914 Colorado coal strike led by the United Mine Workers of America, there has been a curious lack of attention to the Columbine Massacre that occurred not far away within the 1927-1928 Colorado coal strike, led by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

Assessment Question: How was Mayor Robert Speer able to change Denver during the “City Beautiful” movement through the buildings and landscapes that were developed during his time in office? 6. Contextual Paragraph Mayor Robert Speer made his mark on the Denver landscape by participating in the “City Beautiful” movement made popular during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Progressive leaders used the idea of promoting civic and moral virtue through urban planning and the beautification of architecture as a response to the crowded living conditions in major urban areas. The overcrowding was due to a population boom attributed to immigration, movement from rural areas, and increased birth rates. Spurred by the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, this movement created a surge of neoclassical architecture throughout the United States. Speer traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and to the Exposition as well, joining with other leaders who thought the best way to combat ugly, dirty, overcrowded cities was to create a sense of European beauty. This entailed the use of white neoclassical buildings based on the design of large European cities and the provision of open spaces for citizens to enjoy. Speer committed to this design plan and brought it to Denver, clearing a wide swath of land in central Denver west of the Capitol and constructing Civic Center, which is now a designated National Historic Landmark.

  • 5-Minute Check Transparencies with Standardized Test Practice
Guide to Using the 5-Minute Check Transparencies with Standardized Test Practice The first transparency in each chapter is an assessment of skills presented in the previous chapter. The other transparencies in the chapter assess the previous lesson’s concepts. Each transparency ends with a standardized test practice question that typifies those students will encounter in the Student Edition and in national testing formats. How to Use These transparencies can be used as warm-up activities at the beginning of the class period, which enables you to check attendance, pass out papers, or perform other clerical tasks. They can also be used as a quiz or end-of-lesson check to monitor students’ understanding of the previous day’s concepts. Glenc oe/M cGraw-Hill Copyright © by the McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.
