Simple Summary: The invasive hornet Vespa bicolor Fabricius was first discovered in Taiwan in 2003 and was not confirmed to have been established until 2014. This study was conducted in order to (1) assess the current status of V. bicolor abundance, dispersal, seasonality, and possible impact on honeybee (Apis mellifera Linnaeus) in Taiwan; (2) and to trace the origins of Taiwan’s V. bicolor population. To assess V. bicolor abundance, we used visual surveys, sweep netting, and hornet traps in four known ranges in northern and central Taiwan from 2016 to 2020. Additionally, to understand V. bicolor dispersion, we mapped environmental data using ArcGIS, and to predict future V. bicolor range, we used ecological niche modeling.

  • Non-Anopheline Mosquitoes of Taiwan: Annotated Catalog and Bibliography1
Pacific Insects 4 (3) : 615-649 October 10, 1962 NON-ANOPHELINE MOSQUITOES OF TAIWAN: ANNOTATED CATALOG AND BIBLIOGRAPHY1 By J. C. Lien TAIWAN PROVINCIAL MALARIA RESEARCH INSTITUTE2 INTRODUCTION The studies of the mosquitoes of Taiwan were initiated as early as 1901 or even earlier by several pioneer workers, i. e. K. Kinoshita, J. Hatori, F. V. Theobald, J. Tsuzuki and so on, and have subsequently been carried out by them and many other workers. Most of the workers laid much more emphasis on anopheline than on non-anopheline mosquitoes, because the former had direct bearing on the transmission of the most dreaded disease, malaria, in Taiwan. Owing to their efforts, the taxonomic problems of the Anopheles mos quitoes of Taiwan are now well settled, and their local distribution and some aspects of their habits well understood. However, there still remains much work to be done on the non-anopheline mosquitoes of Taiwan. Nowadays, malaria is being so successfully brought down to near-eradication in Taiwan that public health workers as well as the general pub lic are starting to give their attention to the control of other mosquito-borne diseases such as filariasis and Japanese B encephalitis, and the elimination of mosquito nuisance. Ac cordingly extensive studies of the non-anopheline mosquitoes of Taiwan now become very necessary and important. Morishita and Okada (1955) published a reference catalogue of the local non-anophe line mosquitoes. However the catalog compiled by them in 1955 was based on informa tion obtained before 1945. They listed 34 species, but now it becomes clear that 4 of them are respectively synonyms of 4 species among the remaining 30.

A checklist of all species of the order Anura from Taiwan and adjacent islands is provided. In total, distribution data of 33 anuran species are given including three introduced species. The inland distribution information provided is based on specimen collections of four institutes in Taiwan: the Biodiversity Research Center, Academia Sinica, Taipei; National Museum of Natural Science, Taichung; National Taiwan Museum, Taipei; and National Taiwan University Museum, Taipei. Phylogeographic studies of these anurans are also noted if references are available. Keywords: Anura, checklist, distribution, specimen records, Taiwan. • Withholding Income
Preface Taiwan has undergone rapid economic growth for more than five decades. Efforts on the part of enterprises and the government continue to sharpen Taiwan’s competitive edge, which is characterized by an extensive manufacturing base, strong research and development capabilities, a high quality human resource base, and an efficient infrastructure that includes sophisticated telecommunications capacity. The implementation of a policy that focuses on economic growth and major reforms has resulted in a more business-friendly investment climate, liberal monetary measures, and a freer market economy. In competitiveness assessments done by prominent international economic institutions, Taiwan ranks high in favorable investment climate and in competitiveness. According to the 2003-2004 Global Competitiveness Report by the WEF (World Economic Forum), Taiwan ranked fifth in growth competitiveness on a global basis and first in Asia, and sixteenth in business competitiveness. In April 2004, BERI (Business Environment Risk Intelligence) of Switzerland rated Taiwan as the fifth best investment climate in the world and third in Asia, and second in a positive government attitude towards foreign investments. The ROC government looks forward to assisting multinational companies in establishing Taiwan operations as gateway to the Asian Pacific market by utilizing the island’s favorable investment environment and competitiveness, its extensive manufacturing base, and its complete supply chains. To that end, the Industrial Development & Investment Center of the Ministry of Economic Affairs commissioned Deloitte Taiwan to compile this “Cost of Investing in Taiwan” handbook. One objective of the handbook is to help with feasibility studies by foreign investors. It contains information on taxation, investment incentives, and rents at major industrial and office sites; and cost information relating to human resources, water and electricity, and communications.

Mei-ling Chien 簡美玲 National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan Leisure, Work, and Constituted Everydayness Mountain Songs of Hakka Women in Colonized Northern Taiwan (1930–1955) In his creative critique of industrial society and everydayness, Henri Lefeb- vre points out the contradiction and interdependence between leisure and work. Taking the narratives of Hakka women in northern Taiwan speaking about their personal experiences of singing or listening to mountain songs (san24go24, shan’ge) as an illustrative example, this article reveals multiple relations between leisure and work, acting as a theoretical compliment and extension of Lefebvre’s theory. Through a focus on personal narratives, the approach taken in this article enables us to examine and record certain forms of everydayness in the rural lives of Hakka women in Taiwan in the period between 1930 and 1955. This article explores the experiences of Hakka women being colonized through a discussion of life-history narratives in reference to listening to and singing mountain songs within the daily and extraordinary contexts of life within the local community. The article presents several find- ings, including how mountain songs acted both as social markers in colonial society and as channels to obscure the boundary between leisure and work. keywords: mountain songs—everydayness—gender—northern Taiwan— Hakka Asian Ethnology Volume 74, Number 1 • 2015, 37–62 © Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture he Hakka have been an important minority in Taiwan since the Ming and TQing dynasties. Fourteen samples from traditional markets and wine manufacturers were collected and isolated seventeen predominant filamentous fungi from peka. They were identified based on the morphological characteristics and these strains were as, namely, Amy- lomyces rouxii, Rhizopus microsporus var. chinensis, Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis, Rhizopus oryzae and Mucor indicus. Among them, R. microsporus var. chinensis, R. microsporus var. rhizopodiformis and M. indicus are new to the fungal flora of peka in Taiwan. Keywords: Amylomyces, Mucor, peka, Rhizopus, Taiwan.
