Buying locally produced food helps to support the producers in the region, maintaining a well established rural way of life. It gives the economy a much needed boost by keeping money within the community, sustaining local businesses and creating jobs for people who live in the area. Food that is grown closer to us has travelled less distance to reach us – this means less environmental pollution. Locally produced food can also be fresher, healthier and more nutritious having been spared lengthy periods of storage, chilling and travel. And culturally, local organic food has its own ‘story’, bringing a shared meaning at mealtimes and a deeper connection to the land. Organic crops, fruit and vegetables are produced without the use of unnecessary artificial pesticides or weed-killers benefiting your health and the environment. Animal welfare is paramount on organic farms where animals are free range and the routine use of antibiotics and vaccines is not permitted. Even organic processed food is different – hydrogenated fat and artificial flavourings and sweeteners are banned along with other food additives that may be harmful to your health. In addition, organic standards prohibit the use of genetically modified ingredients in food, as well as in animal feed. We hope you enjoy using this directory to explore the delicious local organic food widely available throughout the County Durham, Northumberland, Tees Valley and Tyne & Wear region. Please note: not all entries are certified as organic. The North East Organic Programme cannot be held responsible for any claims made as to the quality of the produce or the goods offered. The regional list was put together by North East Organic Programme. The North East Organic Programme has been developed by the Soil Association working closely with the Northumbria Organic Producer Group (NOP), with support from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and One North East. The programme is funded by DEFRA via the England Rural Development Programme. • Northeast England – a History of Flash Flooding
Northeast England – A history of flash flooding Introduction The main outcome of this review is a description of the extent of flooding during the major flash floods that have occurred over the period from the mid seventeenth century mainly from intense rainfall (many major storms with high totals but prolonged rainfall or thaw of melting snow have been omitted). This is presented as a flood chronicle with a summary description of each event. Sources of Information Descriptive information is contained in newspaper reports, diaries and further back in time, from Quarter Sessions bridge accounts and ecclesiastical records. The initial source for this study has been from Land of Singing Waters –Rivers and Great floods of Northumbria by the author of this chronology. This is supplemented by material from a card index set up during the research for Land of Singing Waters but which was not used in the book. The information in this book has in turn been taken from a variety of sources including newspaper accounts. A further search through newspaper records has been carried out using the British Newspaper Archive. This is a searchable archive with respect to key words where all occurrences of these words can be viewed. The search can be restricted by newspaper, by county, by region or for the whole of the UK. The search can also be restricted by decade, year and month. The full newspaper archive for northeast England has been searched year by year for occurrences of the words ‘flood’ and ‘thunder’. It was considered that occurrences of these words would identify any floods which might result from heavy rainfall.

  • Infrastructure Delivery Plan (IDP) May 2019
Northumberland Local Plan Publication Draft Plan Infrastructure Delivery Plan (IDP) May 2019 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Northumberland Infrastructure Delivery Plan (IDP) has been prepared in support of the Northumberland Local Plan. It identifies the likely infrastructure requirements, associated with the Local Plan over the plan period, up to 2036. The IDP is the output of long standing engagement with infrastructure providers to identify current infrastructure capacity, and to determine the likely future infrastructure requirements, associated with sustainable growth in Northumberland. Focussing on strategic infrastructure requirements, the IDP seeks to identify completed, committed, and planned investment across physical, social and green infrastructure types. It is intended to be a key mechanism by which to coordinate the investment and delivery plans of infrastructure providers to best effect. Where possible the IDP identifies where funding for infrastructure will come from. It also identifies where there are funding gaps. The collective funding gap could underpin the potential introduction of a Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) in Northumberland. There are no infrastructure requirements which are ‘critical’ to the delivery of the Northumberland Local Plan. However, there are some existing pressures on infrastructure and anticipated future pressures as a result of growth, development, demographic changes and other factors. Notably, necessary infrastructure requirements principally relate to: - mitigation or improvement works for a limited number of junctions on the road network; - the need for additional healthcare services to cater for a growing population; - a limited number of areas where additional school provision is required; - timely provision of works to ensure adequate waste water treatment capacity. Plans, programmes and projects have been identified to address these infrastructure requirements, and a range of other requirements which will help ensure the sustainability of Northumberland’s existing and new communities.

  • Borough of Darlington Listed Buildings
EXTRACTS FROM THE LISTS OF BUILDINGS OF SPECIAL ARCHITECTURAL OR HISTORIC INTEREST FOR THE BOROUGH OF DARLINGTON Updated 01/11/2016 Economic Initiative Division Darlington Borough Council INTRODUCTION WHAT THIS DOCUMENT REPRESENTS This document consists of an export from a Listed Buildings database maintained by Darlington Borough Council. The data has been captured from various statutory lists that have been compiled over the years by the Secretary of State for different parts of the Borough. Some of the information has been amended for clarity where a building has been demolished/de- listed, or an address has changed. Each entry represent a single ‘listing’ and these are arranged by parish or town. The vast majority of entries are in one-to-a-page format, although some of the more recent listings are more detailed and lengthy descriptions, spilling over to 2 or 3 pages. BACKGROUND The first listings, in what is now the Borough of Darlington, were made in 1952. The urban area was the subject of a comprehensive re-survey in 1977, and the rural area in 1986 (western parishes) and 1988 (eastern parishes). A number of formal changes to the lists have been made since, as individual buildings have been ‘spot-listed’, de-listed, had grades changed, descriptions altered and mistakes corrected. Further information on conservation in the Borough of Darlington can be found on our website. See www.planning.gov.uk/conservation. NAVIGATING THIS DOCUMENT Unfortunately there is no index to this document in its current format. Please use the text search facility provided in your PDF Viewer to find the entry that you require.
