Occasionally when the dates of the letters show that the order of writing was different, the numbering may be reversed.] GBR 81/1 Title-page: Letter book of E Willoby [Edward Willoby], clerk to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Union. GBR 81/2-3 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to the Poor Law Board, 10 March 1859 acknowledging their letter of 7 March 1859 (10081/1859), about the conveyance of the Workhouse buildings from the Corporation of Berwick to the Guardians. It has been delayed because Mr Home [Robert Home], Town Clerk, was not ready with the conveyance of the piece of land called The Burrs which needs to be executed at the same time. It is now ready for execution. GBR 81/4 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to the Poor Law Board, 12 March 1859 acknowledging their letter of 1 March 1859, about the appointment of Medical Officers for the districts of Tweedmouth, Islandshire, East Norhamshire and West Norhamshire for the following year. It encloses an extract from the minutes of a recent meeting of the Guardians containing the terms of appointment [not included]. GBR 81/5/1 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Knight & Co, solicitors of 21 March 1859 Fleet Street London, requesting them to send a postal order for 12/- , charged against the union, with a receipt, and also one quire of forms “Clerks Quarterly Statement of Nonsettled Poor”. GBR 81/5/2 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Dr Wilson [James 21 March 1859 Wilson] stating that he has been appointed as Medical Officer for the Islandshire District at a salary of £25 per annum for one year until 25 March 1860. GBR 81/6/1 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to M J Turnbull [Matthew 21 March 1859 James Turnbull], of Coldstream, stating that he has been appointed as Medical Officer for the Norhamshire, West division, District at a salary of £7 per annum for one year until 25 March 1860. Instructions from the Privy Council are enclosed [not included], and he is requested to send his quarterly accounts. GBR 81/6/2 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Dr Morrison [Andrew 21 March 1859 Morison] stating that he has been appointed as Medical Officer for the Tweedmouth District at a salary of £40 per annum for one year until 25 March 1860. GBR 81/7 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to J Paxton [John Paxton], 21 March 1859 of Norham, stating that he has been appointed as Medical Officer for Norhamshire, East division, District at a salary of £33 per annum for one year until 25 March 1860. His outstanding weekly returns are requested. GBR 81/8 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to William Dickson, Clerk to 22 March 1859 the Visitors, stating that a female pauper lunatic chargeable to Berwick is now in the workhouse. It asks whether such pauper lunatics will be admitted to the county asylum. GBR 81/9 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to William Denham, 22 March 1859 carpenter of Tweedmouth, informing him that the Board has adopted the recommendation of the Workhouse Committee to accept the tender of F Lough [Francis Lough] for the supply of coffins. GBR 81/10 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to the Poor Law Board, 23 March 1859 1 about the appointment of Medical Officers, enclosing an extract from the minutes of the meeting of 21 March 1859 and requesting sanction for the resolution therein. It also states that none of those appointed is qualified according to article 168 of the General Consolidated Order, and the appointments are made for one year. GBR 81/11 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to the Poor Law Board 23 March 1859 about the case of Mary Ann Thompkins, pauper, requesting a reply to his earlier letter. GBR 81/12 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to William Alder, wine 23 March 1859 merchant of Bridge End, stating that his tenders have been accepted for supplying the Workhouse with porter (@ 3/6 per dozen), whiskey (@ 2/6 per bottle) and brandy (@ 4/8 per bottle). GBR 81/13 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to John Davidson, grocer of 23 March 1859 High Street, stating that his tenders have been accepted for supplying the Workhouse with a chest of tea (@ 3/6 per pound) and patent starch (@ 6d per pound). GBR 81/14 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Francis Lough, 23 March 1859 undertaker of College Place, stating that his tender has been accepted for supplying the Workhouse with coffins [at the rates defined by the sizes specified]. GBR 81/15 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Robert Wood, butcher of 23 March 1859 High Street, stating that his tender has been accepted for supplying the Workhouse with rounds and flanks of beef (@ 7/6 per stone), houghs (@ 3/9 per stone) and legs of mutton (@ 8d per pound). Wood is asked to give the names of two sureties for a bond of £40. GBR 81/16 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to William Cowe, grocer of 23 March 1859 High Street, stating that his tender has been accepted for supplying the Workhouse for 6 months with raw sugar (@46/6 per cwt), roll tobacco (@ 3/7 per lb), snuff (@ 3/5 per lb), pepper (@ 1/1 per lb), treacle (@ 2/- per stone), stove salt (@ 2/- per cwt), soap (@ 38/- per cwt), soda (@ 7/6 per cwt). GBR 81/17 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to John Young, grocer of 23 March 1859 High Street, stating that his tender has been accepted for supplying the Workhouse for 6 months with coffee (@ 1/2 per lb). GBR 81/18 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to the owners of 23 March 1859 Scremerston & Shoreswood Colliery stating that their tender has been accepted for supplying the Workhouse for 6 months with Scremerston coals (@ 9/- per ton). GBR 81/19 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to John Crosby, baker of 23 March 1859 Church Street, stating that his tender has been accepted for supplying the Workhouse for 3 months with indoor fine bread (@ 4¾d per 4lb loaf), indoor coarse bread (@ 3¾d per 4lb loaf), outdoor coarse bread (@ 6d for 6lb 6oz loaf), outdoor oatmeal (@ 6d for 4lb 4oz). He is asked to name two sureties for a bond of £40. GBR 81/20 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to William Gibson stating 24 March 1859 that the Guardians have appointed him and Mr Fleming [Joseph Fleming] as a subcommittee to confer with Mr Cowe about the terms on which he offers to let part of his garden. GBR 81/21 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Joseph Fleming 24 March 1859 reminding him that he and Mr Gibson [William Gibson] have been appointed by the Guardians as a subcommittee to confer with Mr Cowe about the terms on which he offers to let part of his garden. GBR Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Thomas Parker, 25 March 1859 81/22/1 Secretary to the Committee for Establishing Superannuation Funds, enclosing a postal order for £1/-/- as a subscription from the officers 2 of the Union for the work of the Committee. GBR Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Dr Skae [David Skae], of 25 March 1859 81/22/2 the Royal Edinburgh Asylum, Morningside, Edinburgh, informing him that Agnes Pringle, a female pauper lunatic, will be sent for admission to the asylum on the following day. GBR 81/23 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Messrs Grant & Wallace, 25 March 1859 of 30 Drummond Place Edinburgh, enclosing papers for the admission of a pauper lunatic to Morningside Asylum. Mrs Mitchell, Matron of the Workhouse, will arrive by the mail train with the lunatic on the following morning. It notes that the new Lunacy Act for Scotland requires two medical certificates to be signed for admission, and asks whether in future both could be signed in Berwick rather than one of them in Edinburgh. GBR Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to the Treasurer of the 29 March 1859 81/24/1 Durham County Asylum, at Sedgfield, enclosing a bill at sight for £7/14/3, for the maintenance of the pauper lunatic William Bartrim. GBR Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to [W F Blackett], County 4 April 1859 81/24/2 Treasurer, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, enclosing a cheque for £73/17/6 in payment of the Police Rate. GBR Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to J Kent, of Gateshead Fell 5 April 1859 81/25/1 Asylum, enclosing a cheque for £9/2/- for maintenance of the pauper lunatic Mary Ann Temple. GBR Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to [Cornelius Garbutt], of 5 April 1859 81/25/2 Dunston Lodge Asylum near Gateshead, enclosing a cheque for £11/11/- for maintenance of pauper lunatics for the Union. GBR 81/26 Letter from Berwick-upon-Tweed Union to Messrs Grant & Wallace, 5 April 1859 of 30 Drummond Place Edinburgh, enclosing a postal order for £2/18/10 in payment of charges relating to Agnes Pringle.
