  • Yokohama Rubber Donates Hero's Car from the Film “Speed Racer”
December 25, 2008 Contact: Corporate Communications Dept. For immediate release The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. 36-11, Shimbashi 5-chome Minato-ku, Tokyo 105-8685 Phone: 81-3-5400-4531 Fax: 81-3-5400-4570 Yokohama Rubber Donates Hero’s Car from the Film “Speed Racer” to Museum Tokyo - The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced that, as part of its social contribution activities, it had donated a replica of the car named “Mach 5” to the Nasu Classic Car Museum. The car is fitted with YOKOHAMA tires, and is driven by the hero in the Hollywood film Speed Racer. The donation took place on December 22. Speed Racer is a live-action film based on the Japanese popular animation series “Mach Go Go Go,” which was aired in Japan in 1967. The production team from the Matrix movies recreated it as a live-action film using stunning computer graphics, and it was released in major international markets this summer. As a super sports car boasting a unique design and eight secret weapons, the Mach 5 has become popular as the ultimate car among children and others who have seen the film since its release. The donation came about after Yokohama Rubber and the museum agreed on their shared desire to “convey adoration, dreams, and joy of cars to children.” Yokohama Rubber had a product placement agreement for the production of Speed Racer, and also carried out extensive promotional activities in some 40 countries before it was released. The replica was used on such occasions. The Nasu Classic Car Museum exhibits a number of famous, classic cars dating all the way to the beginning of the 1900s, to the inception of the motor vehicle, some bearing the appearance of horse-drawn carriages, and one that set a world speed record in 1930.

  • Speed Racer, Educational Technology Assessment
Grades 4 – 5 Speed Racer Science, Math, and Educational Technology Assessment Introduction This Anchor Set provides educators with student exemplars for the grades 4-5 Speed Racer Educational Technology assessment. We selected each sample to model the range of scoring for this assessment. There are two components that make up the scoring guide for educational technology— Attributes of Educational Technology Standards (checklist) and the Scoring Rubric for Educational Technology. Attributes of Educational Technology Standards. Teachers will use the attributes checklist first to determine the number of attribute points the student work can earn. The checklist presents a list of characteristics that should be present in student work which meets the standard. The GLEs targeted by the assessment are listed in the left column. Each attribute name, such as Generate Questions, is derived directly from the standards (Build background knowledge and generate questions by viewing multimedia.). Each attribute has one or more descriptions which detail what an at-standard performance looks like (Develops original questions after viewing multimedia.). This is different from a typical rubric, which describes various levels of performance. With the checklist, the teacher has only to decide whether or not the work is at standard. If the teacher determines that the work is at standard, then it earns the number of points indicated in the right-hand column. The teacher totals the points. Scoring Rubric for Educational Technology. In the final step, the teacher uses the total number of points earned in the attributes checklist to determine the overall level of performance for the assessment. Student work earning no more than five attribute points would represent a below standard (Level 1) performance.

  • 1/43 Scale Racing: Pros & Cons
ALL ABOUT 1/43 SCALE MODEL CAR RACING The vast majority of the model car racing sets sold by toy stores and chains like Target and Toys ‘R Us, have cars that are considerably smaller than the 1/32 scale cars that are featured in Model Car Racing magazine. The reason why 1/32 scale race car sets are not sold in these mass retail chain stores is simple, the 1/32 scale sets and cars are about two to three-times the price of 1/43 scale sets and cars. There’s less material in the 1/43 scale cars and track and the cars are much simpler models with no interiors and fewer separately-applied detail parts. Few are painted---most are pad-printed directly on colored plastic (as are some 1/32 scale cars). The lack of fine detail is not that apparent, however, thanks to smaller size of the 1/43 scale cars. You can have as much fun racing 1/43 scale cars as you can racing 1/32 scale cars. Mathematically, the 1/43 scale cars are 3/4ths the size of the 1/32 scale cars but that is a linear dimension---in three dimensions, the 1/43 scale cars appear to be about half the size of 1/32 scale cars. The 1/43 scale track is also proportionally narrower and the sections are shorter than 1/32 scale track. As a result, it’s difficult to tell, from a photograph, whether the cars are 1/43 or 1/32 scale. Ironically, the 1/43 scale cars look more realistic on 1/32 scale track than most 1/32 scale cars because the track overwhelms the size of the cars---as the track does in full-size racing.

  • The Many Faces of Internationalization in Japanese Anime Amy Shirong Lu
169-187 091893 Lu (D - CMYK) 5/6/08 09:11 Page 169 article The Many Faces of Internationalization in Japanese Anime Amy Shirong Lu Abstract This article explores the internationalization of Japanese anime (animation) in an effort to help explain the cultural politics behind this popular cultural product. The inter- nationalization of anime includes the incorporation of de- Japanized elements into anime’s background, context, character design, and narrative organization. A theoretical framework for understanding anime’s internationalization is developed, proposing that there are at least three kinds of cultural politics working behind anime’s international success: one, de-politicized internationalization, which primarily serves as a commercial tactic to attract international audiences; two, Occidentalized inter- nationalization, which satiates a nationalistic sentiment; three, self-Orientalized internationalization, which reveals a cultural desire to establish Japan as an ersatz Western country in Asia. Keywords anime, cultural politics, de-Japanization , internationalization, Japanese animation, Occidentalism, Orientalism, self-Orientalization Anime, another name for Japanese animation,1 emerged in the 1910s (Fan, 2001: 115)2 and developed its current distinctive form in the 1960s (Mangels and Hamill, 2003: xvii).3 A fascinating characteristic of anime is that it usually does not seem Japanese. For example, today’s middle-aged Americans can ‘fondly remember watching Speed Racer (1967) after school on television, often without realizing its Japanese animation: an interdisciplinary journal (http://anm.sagepub.com) Copyright © 2008 SAGE (London, Los Angeles, New Delhi and Singapore) Vol 3(2): 169–187 [1746-8477(200807)]10.1177/1746847708091893 169-187 091893 Lu (D - CMYK) 5/6/08 09:11 Page 170 170 animation: an interdisciplinary journal 3(2) origin’ (Napier, 2000: 5).

THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ B.M., University of Central Missouri, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON Michelle Jurkiewicz, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2019 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, or anime, has been popular around the globe for the last sixty years. Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.
