You and your child can test how fast objects move by setting up a “speed racer” game. Gather objects that can roll or have wheels and make a starting and ending line. Race your objects. Encourage your child to keep a chart. What objects move faster? What objects move slower? Does the shape of the object affect how fast or slow the object moves? What ways could you change the object to make it move faster?

ACTIVITY: TRY THIS Play a game with your child that encourages sharing and taking turns. Try card games like “Go Fish!” and “Uno”, board games like “Candyland” and “Sorry!” and activity games like “Simon Says” and “Red Light, Green Light.” For older children, you can fi nd a game that focuses on academic skills such as Boggle Jr for spelling and Yahtzee for math or encourage your child to invent their own game!

ACTIVITY: TRY THIS Your child can explore height using nonstandard units—any basic object that comes in a consistent size such as drinking straws, paper clips, Popsicle sticks, Lego blocks, etc. Go around your home measuring how tall things are using one of these “units of measurement.” For example, a chair might be eight straws tall or 40 paper clips tall. Have your child take notes and after they get the hang of it, see if they can make predictions before measuring.

Stretch rubber bands across a tissue box to make a guitar (you can add a paper towel tube for the neck). Fill small plastic containers with pebbles, twigs, rice or beans to make shakers (just make sure the lid is on tight or you can tape together for added security). Now play along with your favorite music or make up your own! Make sure you supervise children with small objects that could be a choking hazard.
