Tickets are on sale now. HBE began their musical training at the ages of four and five with their father, jazz trumpeter/band leader Kelan Phil Cohran (EARTH, WIND, & FIRE, CHAKA KHAN, SUN RA). They went on to form the Phil Cohran Youth Ensemble in 1990. While the group’s early musical training primarily encompassed elements of instrumental performance, the brothers were personally exposed to the music of their own generation - hip-hop, rock, and reggae to name a few – which have now merged the cosmic jazz style of their father. The ensemble’s sound has spread throughout the industry, and after Emcee/actor Mos Def caught a live HBE show, the brothers were asked to join him onstage as part of the Mos Def Big Band. The brothers recorded the Gorillaz record with D.Albarn Welcome to Plastic Beach and joined the “Plastic Beach 2010 World T” upon its release, performing alongside Bobby Womack, Mick Jones from the Clash, De La Soul, and Snoop Dogg.

GORILLAZ: HUMANZ The world’s most famous virtual band, comprised of musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, plus the digital ensemble of vocalist / keyboardist 2-D, bassist Murdoc Niccals, and American drummer Russel Hobbs, fronted by Japanese singer / guitarist, Noodle, took to the stage after a 7-year break with their new Humanz World Tour. Their return? A glorious amalgamation of cartoon enigmas, ethereal lighting, and a touring sound system first. Featuring an ever-changing cast of special guests including De La Soul and Noel Gallagher, and featuring support from British rapper Little Simz, Humanz is quite the spectacular. It poses a question about the possibility of innovation and conceptual development in contemporary popular music, overflowed with retromania. A growing popularity of such form as a “concept album” and its transformation into concept multimedia projects is regarded as a positive sign of the changes in music production and distribution. Detailed cultural analysis of one particular case, the multimedia concept project by the British band Gorillaz, demonstrates how a substantial cultural and musical innovation can exist today in the framework of popular entertainment. The last studio album by Gorillaz, called Plastic Beach (2010) works with the concept of Utopia and utopian imagery, presenting music as a space for free and meaningful collaboration among musicians and for the creation of the diverse community of listeners.
