That today’s Thira is the remnant of an exploded volcano is quite evident when one looks at a map of this region of the Mediterranean. Located as part of the Aegean Islands, just north of Crete, it shows the unmistakable shape of a water filled volcanic caldera with a center-cone island. Scientists have identified volcanic ash taken from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, close to the Lebanese coast, as originating from Thira. The time frame of some 3300 years ago also coincides with the beginning of a rather tumultuous time in this part of the ancient world, the end of the “Bronze Age”. The possible cause of that could well have been a natural disaster, in the very heart of the ancient world as we know it. Now that I have your attention and possibly have whetted your curiosity, let me introduce you to one of the small wonders of this very ancient world, the beautiful Cyclamen, all 22 species of them.

Khalilia Forensic Science Department, Al- Istiqlal University, PO. Box 10, Jericho, Palestine Abstract It is important to develop new approaches to increase the efficacy of cancer treatments. Nowadays, the uses of natural products to treat cancer are very common. In addition, working with plants that are endemic to Palestine and determining the biological activities of these plant extracts, is extremely important due to the potential for new drug development . Cyclamen persicum is used in traditional medicinal to treat anti-rheumatic, diarrhea, abdominal pains, edema, abscesses, eczema, cancer and other ailments. In this study the cytotoxic effect of C. persicum tubers and leaves ethanolic extracts were studied against MCF-7, PC-3 and LNCaP cancer cell lines, using mitochondrial dehydrogenase enzyme method . Results showed the remarkable cytotoxic activity of C. persicum extracts, against breast and prostate adenocarcinoma. For tubers extract the IC 50 value was found to be 0.05 mg/ml for the three cell lines. Although the leaves extract the IC 50 value was found to be 0.25 mg/ml for PC-3 and MCF-7 cell lines, while LNCaP cell inhibition were less than 30% at all tested leaves extract concentrations. MCF-7 cells exhibited the highest sensitivity to the C. persicum extracts, compared to PC-3 and LNCaP cell lines evaluated. In contrast, LNCaP cells generally exhibited the lowest sensitivity to extracts.

But though I’m afraid things won’t get any easier for a while, at least we now have some hope for a return to normality. When I last wrote, in the Summer Newsletter, we still expected that this might happen soon, and optimistically planned for a carefully managed Plant Sale. Alas, the second wave came upon us and this wasn’t to be: I’m sorry to have disappointed the many of you that got in touch to offer plants, and to participate. But we still have the plants from Gerd Stopp, apart from the annuals that is, and have tentatively pencilled in March next year for the sale. Given the uncertainty of the times we think it would not be sensible to set a date just yet (you see I’ve learned my lesson on this at least!), but we will get in touch to confirm the arrangements as soon as it seems possible.

    Cyclamen hederifolium Cyclamen hederifolium (ivy-leaved cyclamen or sowbread) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Cyclamen, of the family Primulaceae. It is the most widespread cyclamen species, the most widely cultivated after the florist's cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum), and the most hardy and vigorous in oceanic climates. It is native to woodland, shrubland, and rocky areas in the Mediterranean region from southern France to western Turkey and on Mediterranean islands, and naturalized farther north in Europe and in the Pacific Northwest. Names The word "cyclamen" comes through Latin from the Greek cyclamīnos or κυκλάμινος (also κυκλαμίς) meaning "circle", with reference to the shape of the tuber. The species name hederifolium comes from the Latin hedera (ivy) and folium (leaf), because of the shape and patterning of the leaves. The older species name, neapolitanum, refers to Naples, where the species grows. Description Cyclamen hederifolium is a tuberous perennial that blooms and sprouts leaves in autumn, grows through the winter, and goes dormant before summer, when the seed pods ripen and open. Tuber The tuber is round-flattened and produces roots from the top and sides, leaving the base bare. In the florist's cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum), roots come from the bottom, leaving the top and sides bare. The tuber becomes larger with age; older specimens commonly become more than 25 cm (10 in) across. In other species, tubers do not grow as large; Cyclamen coum usually does not reach more than 6.5 cm (2.6 in) across. Leaves and flowers grow from buds on top. This made it necessary to determine at first the chromosome numbers of the different species and varieties, see KAPPERT (9). It was self-evident that simultaneous with this investigation the systematic relationships of the different species were studied (DOORENBOS). Taxonomists chiefly use easily distinguishable macroscopical characters for the classification of species and genera. After the discovery, however, that chromosomes are bearers of genetical characteristics, these also have been used in the study of relationships. Especially after it became clear that in many cases differences in species can be traced back to differences in chromosome arrange­ ment, and none the less after new species were bred by intential species cros­ sings, more and more attention was paid to chromosome number and chromo­ some morphology as an aid to classification. In the different Cyclamen species many different chromosome numbers are found.
