Dredging and Marine Contractors 34 Coastal Engineering example Final Design – DAS Island (Abu Dhabi)

35/60 Final Design – DAS Island (Abu Dhabi)

DAS Island: • Island for oil export • Tankfarm, jetties, work harbour, SBM.. • Extension required for longer runway and accommodation 36/60 Final Design – DAS Island

D&C project; Van Oord hired Royal Haskoning for Final Design

Masterplan DAS extension: • Airport island • Accomodation island • 7.5 km revetments around the island • 2 Search&Rescue boat ramps • Submarine cable crossing protections • 14 drainage system outfalls (rainwater)

• Design conditions: up to Hs = 5m waves

37/60 Design Wave Conditions

38/60 Revetment design overview

39/60 Physical model tests 2D Test section

3D Test area

Area tested at DHI

• 2D tests in Delft - Deltares • 3D tests in Denmark and Delft (DHI / Deltares) CS-4 at -6m (Ch. 1850) • Modifications to cross sections in 2D • Verification of design in 3D, unfortunately some CS-3 at -8m (Ch. 5500) CS-1 at -9.5m (Ch. 3900) modifications required as well Area tested at Deltares

40/60 2D testing at Deltares

Wave flumes built in basin

41/60 2D test series section 1 (highest waves)

Hs = 5m

Tp = 10.1s h = +2.41m

42/60 Test results

Some damage / Overtopping issues:

. Overtopping limit: . 0.4 l/s/m . Measured: . 11 l/s/m . Drainage rock washed away

43/60 Modifications and re-testing

• Entire crest higher – no success (reclamation level could not change)

• Forget about the crown wall…

• Or put it at the end, i.e. leave the drainage principle

44/60 Final cross sections

• Permeability under crest increased for back-flow water

• Crown wall at end

• Varying crest width along island perimeter (tested simultaneously in 2 sides of flume)

45/60 3D testing SW corner at Deltares

• Results confirm stability / overtopping results from 2D tests

• Overtopping lower from oblique wave reduction, optimisation possible

46/60 3D testing NW corner at DHI (Denmark)

Crest width and level increased for overtopping (3D / foreshore effects)

47/60 Construction
