FUNDRAISING PACK

2020/2021 HOST A FEMINIST FILM NIGHT

Gather your pals together (online or in person) and tuck into some classic feminist films to raise money for YWCA Scotland!

We suggest having a couple of films ready and making a proper event of it – you can run your Film Night at any time, but popcorn is a must – but what you watch is completely up to you

To choose your films, you might want to focus on a particular theme or maybe you just want to enjoy some feel-good girl power – it’s up to you! If you’re thinking of hosting online, you might want to check out the Netflix Party browser extension, share someone’s screen on a Zoom call, or just all agree to hit play at the same time and get a WhatsApp group going to chat and share live reactions while the film’s happening. If you fancy, you could even live tweet your reaction using #YWCAFilmClub and tag us @youngwomenscot.

Suggested donation based on 3 films: £2 per film or £5 for the night. CREATE A FEMINIST FILM CLUB

Make your feminist film night a more regular thing and set up a longer-term fundraising Feminist Film Club in aid of YWCA Scotland.

You might want to make time to discuss themes, plot and characterisation afterwards (or just kick back and enjoy a film with your friends every few weeks). Either way, be sure to have a list of films ready and consider a voting system to choose the next meeting’s film, as well as taking suggestions from those joining.

Suggested donation: £3 per meeting

Suggested films from the YWCA Scotland team:

Legally Blonde, Dumplin, On the Basis of Sex, Lady Bird, Our Little Sister, The Farewell, Girlhood, Mustang, In Between, Queen of Katwe, Belle, Breadwinner, Persepolis. SET UP A BOOK CLUB

You might choose authors or protagonists who are women or other genders, perhaps each book follows a theme of intersectional feminism, or maybe you want to discuss the book through a feminist lens.

To raise funds you might consider charging a fee for each book read through the Book Club, which you can donate as you collect them via our website. And be sure to donate your physical book to a local charity or cafe when you’re finished, if you don’t want to keep it – keep the local feminist lending library growing!

Suggested donation: £1 per meeting / £3 per book

Suggested books from the YWCA Scotland team:

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo, Let Me Tell You This by Nadine Aisha Jassat, I Am Not Your Baby Mother by Candice Brathwaite, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennet and Happy Fat by Sofie Hagen. HOST YOUR OWN QUIZ NIGHT

Need a new theme for your next Zoom quiz? Why not ask your pals to chip in a few quid and have a Quiz Night in aid of YWCA Scotland!

If General Knowledge is too broad, how about focusing each category with a feminist twist – Geography questions including the name of the Prime Minister of New Zealand, or Serena Williams’ medal count for your Sports round. Finish the Famous Feminist Quote is another wildcard round we love to throw in too.

Suggested donation: £3 entry for the quiz

Suggested question from the YWCA Scotland team:

Q: In what year did Diane Abbott become the UK’s first black woman MP? A: 1987 NOTHING BEATS A BAKE SALE

Do you have an office or a block of flats you could sell your best baked goods to? Invite a few friends or neighbours and whip up a fundraising Bake Sale to raise money for YWCA Scotland.

Keep the pricing simple, or use your Bake Sale to highlight the gender pay gap – give a second cost (15% higher) for men, given their average higher earnings.

Suggested donation: 50p - £2 per cake

Patrycja's vegan banana bread recipe:

4 medium ripe bananas; ¼ cup vegetable oil; ¼ cup unsweetened non dairy milk; ½ cup light brown sugar; 2 tsp pure vanilla extract; 2 cups plain flour; 3 tsp cinnamon; 1 tsp baking soda; ½ tsp salt

Heat the oven to 200C. In a large mixing bowl, roughly mash the bananas. Add the brown sugar, oil, vanilla, and almond milk, and whisk to incorporate. Mix in the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon and stir until combined. Do not overmix, or the banana bread can come out dense and gummy!. Transfer the batter to your pan. Bake for about 45 minutes, then cover with foil and bake for 10-15 minutes longer, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with just a couple crumbs. ORGANISE A HOBBY-A- THON

Feminism runs on community, so tap into your own and get creative with your fundraising activities!

Maybe you and some pals will pay a few quid to spend time learning to knit together, or if you’re seasoned knitters, maybe you’ll sell your finest wooly wears and donate the profits? For arty folks, set up a life drawing session or scribble-a-thon? If you’re into dancing, get your friends up and boogying for a dance party to feminist anthems and ask for a donation to join in for the event. Set up a charity 5-a-side match with all players and spectators chipping in a couple of pounds to enjoy the match, or have your friends and family sponsor you to go wild swimming in the local loch. Whatever your hobby, there are definitely ways to raise money for YWCA Scotland while doing something you love!

Suggested donation: £2 for participation, £4 for spectating, £7 for sponsoring PLAY IT FORWARD WITH A CHARITY GIG

Part of a band, choir, ensemble or chorus line?

Take a YWCA Scotland donation bucket to your next performance, add a donate button to your livestream, or donate a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales! A couple of feminist anthems in the set list to unleash the audience’s inner riot grrrl wouldn’t go amiss either.

Suggested donation: £1 from every ticket sale or £5 donation in lieu of tickets

Looking for an alternative to the usual quiz nights on Zoom or down your local pub? Why not organise a games night for family and friends to raise money for YWCA Scotland?

Maybe you’ll settle in for a night of cards, set up a board game tournament, or battle it out in a feminist D&D one- shot online – whatever your preferred game type, simply ask for a donation to take part, or by game if you have a larger group rotating between different games, and donate the proceeds to us!

Suggested donation: £5 entry / £2 per game
