Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play a Dissertation
The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play A dissertation presented to the faculty of the Scripps College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Todd L. Harper November 2010 © 2010 Todd L. Harper. All Rights Reserved. This dissertation titled The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play by TODD L. HARPER has been approved for the School of Media Arts and Studies and the Scripps College of Communication by Mia L. Consalvo Associate Professor of Media Arts and Studies Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT HARPER, TODD L., Ph.D., November 2010, Mass Communications The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play (244 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Mia L. Consalvo This dissertation draws on feminist theory – specifically, performance and performativity – to explore how digital game players construct the game experience and social play. Scholarship in game studies has established the formal aspects of a game as being a combination of its rules and the fiction or narrative that contextualizes those rules. The question remains, how do the ways people play games influence what makes up a game, and how those players understand themselves as players and as social actors through the gaming experience? Taking a qualitative approach, this study explored players of fighting games: competitive games of one-on-one combat. Specifically, it combined observations at the Evolution fighting game tournament in July, 2009 and in-depth interviews with fighting game enthusiasts. In addition, three groups of college students with varying histories and experiences with games were observed playing both competitive and cooperative games together. -

Recent queerbaiting research has focused almost exclusively on television, leaving gaps in the ways queer representation is negotiated in other media forms. -

So, which Persona game should I play first? [1/2] • Revelations: Persona • Generally considered the worst in the series. • Persona 2: Innocent Sin • Highly regarded, but considered more “hardcore” compared to the newer titles. Very similar to typical Shin Megami Tensei games. You negotiate with demons to recruit them and such, but there are no social links or any of the new features • Persona 2: Eternal Punishment • The direct sequel to Innocent Sin, no reason to play it first So, which Persona game should I play first? [2/2] • Persona 3 • The start of the new era of Persona, with social links and living out a year and all that jazz. Persona 3 is highly regarded, and it has a much darker story than Persona 4, but it’s also very grindy, with only one giant dungeon to explore. -

Persona 3: Mass Accession Written by X-22
Persona 3: Mass Accession Written by x-22. Based on an idea by Colonel-Sandman and characters from Atlus' Persona 3 A cool light filled the office of Mitsuru Kirijo's Tatsumi penthouse apartment. The large room was one of downplayed ostentatiousness and elegance, much like the young woman sitting at her desk. Glancing at the time and barely acknowledging that it was very late, the Kirijo Group CEO opened another report on her computer screen. Like most of the ones she had skimmed through today this one was really the province of someone further down in the company system, but Mitsuru preferred to keep tabs on everything that was going on in her organization. "I'll just skim through this..." the red-haired woman muttered to herself, but the voice in her head was not convinced: Didn't you learn anything from the incident seven years ago. Mitsuru smiled. It was true the Tartarus event had taught her that she could rely on others instead of shouldering all the responsibility for everything. And she liked to believe she had gotten better at it, but there had been no major Shadow-related incidents for over two years and she had to do something. "I'm sorry, Tunoku," Mitsuru chuckled. "Old habits die hard." It was the transfer student Carla Tunoku who had really opened her eyes and showed her the power of relationships. That wasn't the only thing the vibrant redhead had showed her, however... "Who knew commoner food could be so delicious?" Mitsuru chortled and bunched up a Wild Duck Burger wrapper and tossed it into the trash can, already overflowing with the things. -

We have a new group of users. They must have intriguing stories to tell…” -Igor, to a new party. Creating a character in Persona may seem daunting at first, especially if this is your first tabletop role-playing game. The sheer complexity of the rules can turn off newcomers to the genre. The jargon may seem incomprehensible and downright inane. That sentiment is totally understandable – tabletop is not for everyone. While a game like Persona is innately complex and due to a complex system, every effort will be made to make sure that character creation is made as simple as possible, and easy enough for anyone to pick up. Why? To give the prospective players, both old and new, an ease of access to the system, without being threatened with jargon and vague bullshit. To begin, let’s outline what Persona: the RPG is. -
