Giuliano da Sangallo and Leonardo da Vinci 85 Chapter 6 Giuliano da Sangallo and Leonardo da Vinci: Cross- Pollination or Parallels? Sabine Frommel École Pratique des Hautes Études, Sorbonne, Paris Giuliano da Sangallo and Leonardo da Vinci—who were born around the same time, 1448 and 1452, respectively—worked as apprentices at the well-known workshops of Francione and Andrea Verrocchio in Florence. Both emerged from the shadow of their master at the beginning of the seventh decade of the fifteenth century. By 1472, Leonardo had become an esteemed painter and a member of the Compagnia di San Luca dei Pittori—The Guild of St. Luke— and, not long thereafter, he created the first masterpieces officially ascribed to him. Sangallo, on the other hand, had, between 1473 and 1480, started building his own reputation as an architect and an antiquity expert while working at Palazzo Scala and Palazzo Cocchi.1 Leonardo’s passion for architecture, which was to last throughout his career, may be traced back to the years between 1472 and 1478, as evidenced by paintings such as his Madonna of the Carnation and The Annunciation. In the second half of the 1470s, thanks to his close collabora- tion with Lorenzo de’ Medici, Leonardo may have been in touch with Giuliano da Sangallo, who was also part of the Magnifico’s entourage.2 Yet, there are no works in Leonardo’s œuvre that might testify to an actual cooperation between him and his patron comparable to that between Giuliano da Sangallo and the Magnifico. From 1481 to 1482, for the main altar of San Do- nato a Scopeto, Leonardo worked on The Adoration of the Magi, which was then left unfinished when he moved to the Sforza court.
