VSHL SUA Record Write Up

This season SUA is planning on going from strength to strength, and for that to occur, we need dedicated coaches and assistants to improve our umpires. In charge of the field umpires for another season, Pete ‘Fossil’ Marshall with his trusty sidekick Ivan ‘Maric’ Walters will hope to improve on the talent at hand, and get the most out of all the umpires available to them. The boundaries will be under the leadership of Dave ‘Surround Sound’ Golby and Adam ‘Dutchi’ Holland. Dolby and Dutchi will inspire their mostly young greyhounds to convince them to run quickly along the white line. The goalies coach (yes they need coaching) for his first season is Michael Richardson assisted by the able Jeff Parker. Best of luck to them and let’s hope they get their umpires fingers pointing straight! We are grateful to have these great coaches for our umpires, and they will be assisted my many observers, and we look forward to seeing the great work they and the umpires put in for the season ahead.

All SUA umpires are reminded they are required to update their personal details online in 3 locations as soon as possible. This includes your pay details on Schedula, your umpiring registration on FootyWeb, and your membership renewal form with SUA. All umpires are also required to complete their Umpire Accreditation Level 1. Further details for the above are available at www.sua.org.au.

The Rare Rule Challenge

Throughout the season we will be including a rule in this section that is rarely seen, however when it occurs can cause controversy and debate, as supporters and sometimes umpires are not sure what the result should be. We hope to create some debate and discussion, and help to inform and educate everyone about some of these blue mooners in our great game.

Situation: Player is kicking in after a behind. He has used his 7-10 seconds and the umpire calls play on. The man on the mark runs towards the player. The player has no options, so turns and handballs the ball through the goals. What’s your decision? a) a free kick for deliberate rushed behind b) ball up at the top of the square for failing to bring the ball into play correctly c) a behind

Last Week’s Challenge: Situation: Ball up near the goal line. The ruckman attempts to punch the ball through the behinds, however, he misses and the ball hits the behind post on the full. Answer: The umpire should pay a free kick for . If the ruckman hits the ball out of bounds on the full from a ruck contest (either ball up or boundary throw in), it is considered deliberate out of bounds, and results in a free kick to the other team.
