Wilson Harris and the Carnivalesque A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in English Literature in the University of Canterbury by Paul Mountfort University of Canterbury 1993 II Here we find .... chimeras (fantastic forms combining human, animal, and vegetable elements), comic devils, jugglers performing acrobatic tricks, masquerade figures and parodical scenes - that is, purely grotesque carnival themes. Mikhail Bakhtin, Rabelais and His World One lives in and out of Carnival time since each element that masks us sustains time as its original medium of sacrifice within creation. Not only that. Original medium of theatre. One is the other's veil of timely or untimely dust. Since all reading and criticism is partial, the introduction gives a brief summary of critical approaches to this aspect of the Harris's work. Building on the insights of these critics this study presents a short festive, folkloric and literary history of carnival from its origins, thus providing background to the celebration of the festival in the present-day Caribbean. Classic carnivalesque features are listed which, though suggestive rather than exhaustive, provide guiding criteria for the readings that follow. -
The Predicament of Cultures: Wilson Harris, Postcolonial Literature, and the Curriculum in Troubled Times
THE PREDICAMENT OF CULTURES: WILSON HARRIS, POSTCOLONIAL LITERATURE, AND THE CURRICULUM IN TROUBLED TIMES Cameron McCarthy In this essay, the author calls attention to the radical reconfigura- tion and rearticulation of identity and belonging taking place in mod- em life as a consequence of the rapid movement of people and cul- tural and economic capital across national borders. Indeed, culture is now a primary object of antagonist feeling and ethnicization. He ar- gues that this provides both a challenge and opportunity to educa- tors as they now are forced to confront the multiplicity and plurality of languages and cultural form that are now defining the modern classroom. Drawing on the work of the Guyanese philosophical nov- eUst, Wilson Harris, the author suggests that postcolonial literature, like that of Harris, provides a model for the thoughtful encounter be- tween human groups and an avenue for communicative action that might help to confront the growing pattern of cultural balkanization that now dominates social and educational life in many different set- tings. Introduction Proof like Doubt must seek the hidden wound in orders of compla- cency that mask opportunist codes of hollow survival (Wilson Harris 1985:7). As we enter the new millennium, the extraordinary diasporic movement of people, ideas, and images across national boundaries has begun to pose major challenges to educational and curricular organization in the school systems of industrial countries of the West. These challenges are particularly fore-grounded in areas of educational and social life that have become flash points of tension as the radical presence of diversity now threatens old ways of curriculum organization associ- ated with Eurocentrism and monoculturalism. -

Université de Montréal Queering the Cross-Cultural Imagination: (Trans)Subjectivity and Wilson Harris’s The Palace of the Peacock by Prathna Lor Mémoire présenté à la Faculté des arts et sciences en vue de l’obtention du grade de MAÎTRISE en ÉTUDES ANGLAISES option AVEC MÉMOIRE Avril, 2013 © Prathna Lor, 2013 RÉSUMÉ Ce mémoire comprend deux volets : une étude théorique et un texte de création littéraire. Dans un premier temps, il s’agir d’étudier le rôle du désir dans la démarche thématique et philosophique employée par l’écrivain Wilson Harris dans son roman The Palace of the Peacock. Ainsi démonterons-nous dans le premier chapitre que Harris se sert – de façon paradoxale – du désir empirique pour faire valoir les limites mêmes de celui-ci. Nous aborderons dans le deuxième chapitre le rapport problématique qu’entretient, chez Harris, la subjectivité féminine avec la subjectivité masculine. En particulier, nous examinerons la représentation de ce rapport sous la forme de métaphores ayant trait à l’environnement et à l’anatomie. Nous avancerons que le caractère problématique que revêt le rapport entre subjectivités féminine et masculine dans le roman est en quelque sorte nécessitée par l’écriture même de Harris. Dans le troisième chapitre, nous prendrons part aux débats sur la poétique qui animent la littérature contemporaine afin de situer notre propre élan vers la création littéraire. En même temps, nous entreprendrons une tentative de récupération de certains des concepts théoriques formulés par Harris, en lien avec notre propre poétique. S’ensuivra notre projet de création littéraire, intitulé HEROISM/EULOGIES, qui constitue le quatrième et dernier chapitre du mémoire. -
