Production and Audition Information for STEEL MAGNOLIAS By Robert Harling Director: Myra Greene Steel Magnolias will run for 14 performances over 3 weekends July 23-Aug 8, 2021 SYNOPSIS: Steel Magnolias is a comedy-drama written by playwright Robert Harling. The action takes place in the beauty shop of Truvy Jones in Chinquapin, Louisiana. All the neighborhood women who are “anybody” congregate for hairstyling, gossiping, and mutual support. The story centers on owner Truvy, her assistant Annelle, and four dear friends who are also Truvy’s clients. This touching play is filled with witty repartee as well as thought-provoking and touching dialog. ROLES: (all roles are available) TRUVY JONES (35-50) – Owns the beauty shop. Vivacious. Dispenses advice while teasing and styling hair with no limit on hairspray. ANNELLE DUPUY-DESOTO (18-25) – Newly hired assistant. Evolves from a timid, backward, and naïve young woman into a wild child who later fervently dives into a religious life. CLAIREE BELCHER (55-70) – Widow of the former mayor. She is the Grand Dame of Chinquapin Parish. Elegant and sophisticated; a true beauty who is not opposed to hearing the latest gossip. SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE (19 or early 20s) – Prettiest girl in town. LOVES pink. A very strong-willed and passionate young woman who must deal with her ongoing diabetes battle. M’LYNN EATENTON (40-late 50’s) – Shelby’s mother. Always “knows what’s best.” Strong and stubborn woman who must deal with the ultimate heartbreak in life. OUISER (pronounced Weezer) BOUDREAUX (55-70) – Wealthy curmudgeon. A tough and eccentric character. AUDITION DATE & TIME: Saturday, June 5 at 10am LOCATION: Historic Pelzer Auditorium. 214 Lebby Street, Pelzer PREPARATION: Those auditioning should be prepared to read selections from the script. Bring your schedule to fill in ALL your potential rehearsal conflicts on the back of the audition form. Conflicts may not be added after casting.
