Production and Audition Information for STEEL MAGNOLIAS By Robert Harling Director: Myra Greene Steel Magnolias will run for 14 performances over 3 weekends July 23-Aug 8, 2021 SYNOPSIS: Steel Magnolias is a comedy-drama written by playwright Robert Harling. The action takes place in the beauty shop of Truvy Jones in Chinquapin, Louisiana. All the neighborhood women who are “anybody” congregate for hairstyling, gossiping, and mutual support. The story centers on owner Truvy, her assistant Annelle, and four dear friends who are also Truvy’s clients. This touching play is filled with witty repartee as well as thought-provoking and touching dialog. ROLES: (all roles are available) TRUVY JONES (35-50) – Owns the beauty shop. Vivacious. Dispenses advice while teasing and styling hair with no limit on hairspray. ANNELLE DUPUY-DESOTO (18-25) – Newly hired assistant. Evolves from a timid, backward, and naïve young woman into a wild child who later fervently dives into a religious life. CLAIREE BELCHER (55-70) – Widow of the former mayor. She is the Grand Dame of Chinquapin Parish. Elegant and sophisticated; a true beauty who is not opposed to hearing the latest gossip. SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE (19 or early 20s) – Prettiest girl in town. LOVES pink. A very strong-willed and passionate young woman who must deal with her ongoing diabetes battle. M’LYNN EATENTON (40-late 50’s) – Shelby’s mother. Always “knows what’s best.” Strong and stubborn woman who must deal with the ultimate heartbreak in life. OUISER (pronounced Weezer) BOUDREAUX (55-70) – Wealthy curmudgeon. A tough and eccentric character. AUDITION DATE & TIME: Saturday, June 5 at 10am LOCATION: Historic Pelzer Auditorium. 214 Lebby Street, Pelzer PREPARATION: Those auditioning should be prepared to read selections from the script. Bring your schedule to fill in ALL your potential rehearsal conflicts on the back of the audition form. Conflicts may not be added after casting. Gross Stanford University Elicitation Using Film Clips 2 Research on emotion has undergone explosive growth during the past few decades, marked by new theories (e.g., evolutionary analyses; Tooby & Cosmides, 1990), methods (e.g., anatomically-based systems for coding facial expressive behavior, see Cohn this volume), and findings (see Cacioppo & Gardner, 1999). Some of the research in this area has been correlational, focusing on factors that naturally co-vary with emotional processes, such as chronological age, physical health, or social status. However, experimental research also has flourished, focusing on emotional processes in the context of relatively well-controlled laboratory environments. Our chapter on the use of emotion-eliciting films, like many of the contributions to the Handbook of Emotion Elicitation and Assessment, lies squarely within this second, experimental tradition. Scientists who take an experimental approach have had at least two distinct motives for eliciting emotion. First, emotion has been used as an independent variable, in manipulations demonstrating the important contribution made by emotion to a diverse array of phenomena ranging from aggression (Zillman & Weaver, 1999) to helping behavior (Isen, Daubman, & Nowicki, 1987). Second, emotion has been used as a dependent – or outcome – variable, in work that has illuminated several emotion-related phenomena such as self-reported experience (Duclos & Laird, 2001), facial expressive behavior (Ekman, Friesen, & Ancoli, 1980), autonomic or central nervous system activation (LeDoux, 1996; Levenson, 1988), and individual differences in emotion responding (e.g., Gross, Sutton, & Ketelaar, 1998; Rottenberg, Kasch, Gross, & Gotlib, 2002).

Thankfully, I wasn’t alone. Our esteemed McGuire Proscenium Stage director Lisa Rothe and several members of our creative team were just as unfamiliar with this sharp-witted and irreverently funny group of Southern A Christmas Carol women. But the moment we immersed ourselves in the script and their Nov 12 – Dec 29, 2019 stories, we fell in love with each and every one of them, quirks and all. Wurtele Thrust Stage Robert Harling wrote the play as an homage to his late sister, Susan, Noura which explains the deep honor and care he gives to his “steel magnolias.” Jan 11 – Feb 16, 2020 McGuire Proscenium Stage I continue to be struck by how much these women love and care for each other despite their differences. They each have their own highs and lows, Twelfth Night but they face everything life throws at them together. That is the secret Feb 8 – March 22, 2020 to their strength, and, as Harling hints at in the title, that is what makes Wurtele Thrust Stage them flourish. He has a passion for music, as he was also in a band while in law school. Shortly after graduating from law school, he decided that acting was the better profession. As a young man Robert was very ambitious. He moved to New York in 1978 and sold tickets on Broadway to support himself.

Oscar® nominees Queen Latifah (“Chicago,” “Hairspray”) and Dolly Parton (“Transamerica,” “Steel Magnolias,” “Nine to Five”) star in Alcon Entertainment’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Joyful Noise,” a funny and inspirational story of music, hope, love and renewal. The small town of Pacashau, Georgia, has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition. Ferguson ABSTRACT: While not rare, films that do represent diabetes must work around the disease’s banal invisibility, and images of diabetics in film are thus especially susceptible to metaphor and exaggeration. This essay is the first to outline a diabetic filmography, discussing medical and cinematic strategies for visualizing the disease as well as how the illness informs family plots and heroic characters in horror films. Doing so, it participates in a larger discussion of the manner in which film images of ill or disabled groups sustain notions of “normalcy” by both representing and denying otherness.
