Match background

ACF Fiorentina will believe that they have to secure a victory against FC Bayern München to breathe renewed optimism into their UEFA Champions League prospects after they followed two draws with a defeat against the German champions on Matchday 3. Bayern are well placed with a two-point lead at the top of Group F following two wins and a draw from their three games. • Bayern's 3-0 victory on Matchday 3 contained a sting in the tail for Fiorentina in the shape of their former striker , who had a hand in both the home team's first-half goals scored by and . Zé Roberto curled in a delightful third late on, his second goal of the campaign. • Fiorentina need a win on Matchday 4 and will certainly be looking to do better than their previous home game in the section when they drew 0-0 with FC Steaua Bucureşti at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. It was a game that did not feature a great deal of flowing football and although early chances arrived for Adrian Mutu and , neither could make them count. • The Viola's campaign – their second appearance in the competition in its current guise – began with a 2-2 away draw at Olympique Lyonnais. Two headed goals by Gilardino gave the visitors a wonderful start but they were unable to protect the lead with Karim Benzema securing a point for the home side four minutes from time. • This is the first time the Florence club have played host to German opposition in an official match for 18 years, and in both the last two meetings they failed to score. The 1989/90 UEFA Cup semi-final second leg with Werder Bremen ended 0-0 but that was enough to take the Italian team through after a 1-1 first leg. In the final Fiorentina lost 3-1 on aggregate to rivals Juventus. • In the first round of the same competition 12 years previously, the Viola lost 3-0 at home to FC Schalke 04, going down 5-1 on aggregate. Their only previous home game with German visitors ended in a 1-0 win against FSV Zwickau in the 1975/76 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round. • Bayern's previous away game in the pool had brought joy to the champions as Daniel Van Buyten's early header ensured they began the campaign on a winning note against Steaua. They followed that with a 1-1 draw against Lyon at the Fußball Arena München. Jürgen Klinsmann's men were forced to come from behind as Martín Demichelis inadvertently flicked Juninho Pernambucano's long-range free-kick into his own net. The hosts responded after the break, Zé Roberto powering in a header to secure a draw.

• This is the fifth time in their last six UEFA Champions League campaigns that Bayern have been paired with Italian opponents in the group stage. They were unbeaten on their last two visits to that country, both in 2006/07, drawing 2-2 at AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals having won 2-0 in the same stadium against FC Internazionale Milano in the group stage. • The Munich club have won three times in a total of eleven visits to Italy, their other victories including another at Inter's expense in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup third round when Bayern won 3-1. They also triumphed 2-1 in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final at AS Roma. • Gilardino was in the Milan side held 2-2 by Bayern in the Italian leg of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League quarter-final. • Gilardino also appeared as a substitute for Italy against Germany in the 2006 FIFA World Cup semi-final played in Dortmund, replacing Toni, who then played for Fiorentina, but now leads the line at Bayern. Massimo Oddo, signed by the Bundesliga giants this summer, was an unused substitute for the Azzurri. , Miroslav Klose, , and Bastian Schweinsteiger all featured for the host nation. • Toni scored 47 league goals in 67 games for Fiorentina before joining Bayern in July 2007. He was the leading Serie A scorer in his first season with the Viola in 2005/06 with 31 strikes. • Toni and Mutu were on opposite sides when Italy faced Romania in Zurich at UEFA EURO 2008™. • Mutu played for Romania against France in the FIFA World Cup qualifying tie in Constanta on 11 October. Franck Ribéry scored France's first in the 2-2 draw. • Mutu also played 24 minutes as a second-half substitute in Juventus's 2-1 loss at Bayern in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage. He then came on for a further 14 minutes in the return match in Turin when Juve turned the tables to win by the same scoreline. • Lyon take on Steaua in the section's other game.

Latest domestic information • Sunday 2 November: AC Siena 1-0 ACF Fiorentina (Kharja 76) A header from Houssine Kharja 14 minutes from time settled the Tuscan derby in Siena's favour. It was the hosts who fashioned the best opportunities to score in the first period, Frey twice denying Massimo Maccarone and saving a Mario Frick effort. Frick then hit the post from close range and with time ticking away, Siena grabbed what proved to be the winner when Moroccan Kharja headed in a corner. • "I think we played really well for about an hour," said Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli. "Then Siena suddenly went close to scoring on the counterattack and we lost our balance as Siena grew in confidence in the latter stages. All we lacked was a goal when we were dominating in the first half. However, I believe our defenders and have to start scoring because we cannot always count on goals from our attackers."

Disciplinary information • Bayern have no players suspended or within a booking of a ban. Latest domestic information • Saturday 1 November: FC Bayern München 3-1 DSC (Klose 25, Ribéry 77, Podolski 85; Wichniarek 30pen) Bayern stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches by defeating Arminia. Miroslav Klose put Bayern ahead from close range though the visitors levelled soon after when Artur Wichniarek scored from the spot following a foul by Martín Demichelis. Having started in a 4-5-1 formation Bayern switched to 4-4-2 at half-time, Lukas Podolski replacing Bastian Schweinsteiger, and the increase in pressure told when Franck Ribéry finished off some neat play by the substitute. Podolski then scored from the spot late on after Ribéry had been impeded. • "I am pleased that we have three points and extended our run," said Bayern coach Jürgen Klinsmann. "We had to be patient against a very compact Arminia team and we could have scored a couple more. Lukas Podolski demonstrated exactly the reaction I had expected of him." • Klinsmann made two changes to the side that started against Eintracht Frankfurt three days earlier, Christian Lell and Andreas Ottl replacing Massimo Oddo and Podolski. • Klose's goal was his 111th in 246 Bundesliga matches, one more than Klinsmann managed in 221 league games, and lifted the striker to 33rd place in the all-time German top-flight scoring chart. Bayern legend Gerd Müller holds the record with 365 goals. • Bayern have won their last five matches in all competitions, their last defeat coming with a 1-0 loss at Hannover 96 on 27 September. • Bayern have scored at least once in each of their last 25 competitive home games, last drawing a blank when MSV Duisburg earned a 0-0 draw on 8 December 2007. • Of the 17 Bundesliga goals Bayern have shipped this season, 14 have come at home. Bayern conceded just 21 goals – and only eight in Munich – during the whole of the 2007/08 season. • Klinsmann's side returned to Bundesliga action after Matchday 3 with a 4-2 defeat of VfL Wolfburg on 25 October. Former Bayern coach saw his side go 2-0 up through (31) and Edin Dzeko (33). Ribéry (41) pulled one back before the break and Van Bommel (54), Tim Borowski (63) and Schweinsteiger (80) then found the net in the second half. • Bayern made it three Bundesliga victories in as many outings with a 2-1 triumph at Eintracht four days later. Demichelis' own-goal (55) put the hosts ahead, but two goals in six second-half minutes from Klose (65) and Ribéry (70) earned the visitors the points. • Klose has scored four goals in his last five matches in all competitions, while Ribéry has registered three in three. • Michael Rensing has played all 990 minutes of the Bundesliga campaign so far, while Podolski and Borowski have also featured in every game. • Rensing has played every competitive fixture for Bayern this season. • Van Bommel is the only Bayern player to have been dismissed this season after picking up a second booking in the 1-1 draw at BV Borussia Dortmund on 23 August. • Bayern suffered their biggest Bundesliga defeat for almost three decades when they were beaten 5-2 by Werder Bremen on 20 September. • Altıntop will be absent for an indefinite period because of a reaction to a metatarsal injury sustained on international duty in March. The 25-year-old broke a bone in his right foot during Turkey's 2-2 draw in Belarus and was sidelined for two months before returning for UEFA EURO 2008™. However, Altıntop felt pain in his foot during the cup game at FC Rot-Weiss Erfurt on 10 August and although he then lasted 63 minutes of the draw with Dortmund, he underwent a corrective operation four weeks ago. • Speaking on 31 October, Klinsmann confirmed Toni would not be fit for Matchday 4, explaining: "His healing has not gone as well as we had hoped and he will be definitely sidelined for the matches against Bielefeld and in Florence." Miscellaneous • Ribéry is the only Bundesliga player to have been nominated for the FIFA World Player award for 2008 though Toni has joined him on the shortlist for the Ballon d'Or. • Breno became a father for the first time on 27 October, to a son called Pietro. • Van Bommel has replaced as Bayern captain, the club's first ever non-German skipper. "Mark was predestined for the role," said Klinsmann. "He's been an outstanding leader of the team since pre-season training started in June, and commands admiration and respect from young and old alike. He's a positive-thinking character, radiates passion and isn't afraid to voice criticisms when he feels it necessary." • Zé Roberto is reconsidering his future after initially announcing he would leave Bayern when his contract expires next summer. "Let's wait and see. You cannot simply say 'no' to Bayern. The final word has not been said on this matter." • Podolski and Klose have each contributed a recipe to the Eat for Goals! children's cookbook, in which 13 top footballers give recipes for their favourite healthy dishes, which was launched by UEFA, the European Commission and the World Heart Federation in Brussels which underlines that healthy food is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. Podolski picked pasta with paprika, turkey and ham as his dish, while Klose went for a power omelette.

Head coach ACF Fiorentina: Cesare Prandelli Date of birth: 19 August 1957 Nationality: Italian Playing career: US Cremonese, Atalanta BC, Juventus Coaching career: Atalanta BC, US Lecce, Hellas-Verona FC, AC Venezia, Parma FC, AS Roma, ACF Fiorentina Cesare Prandelli initially made his name as a promising coach in the prestigious youth system at Atalanta BC, the club where he finished his playing career in 1990 after winning three league titles with Juventus. He also added the Coppa Italia, the 1984 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the European Champion Clubs' Cup a year later in his six seasons in Turin, although he struggled to win a regular role with the Bianconeri. Having impressed at Atalanta, Prandelli accepted the head coach position at US Lecce in the summer of 1997 but resigned the following January with his side struggling against relegation at the bottom of Serie A. He then earned two promotions to the top flight with Hellas-Verona FC – whom he guided to ninth place in Serie A in 1999/00 – and AC Venezia before moving to Parma FC in 2002. He further boosted his burgeoning reputation at the Stadio Tardini despite the club's worsening financial plight. In 2004 Prandelli took over at AS Roma but decided to leave his post before the season started as his wife Manuele – who sadly died in November 2007 – was seriously ill. He moved to ACF Fiorentina in 2005 leading the side to fourth place in Serie A in his first season although they were subsequently stripped of their achievement for their part in Italy's sporting fraud trial. Despite starting the following campaign with minus 15 points as a further punishment, Prandelli guided the club to sixth in 2006/07 and a year later earned a place in UEFA Champions League qualifying. His achievements in Florence were recognised as he was awarded the 'Panchina d'Oro', for the best coach in Serie A, in both 2006 and 2007.

FC Bayern München: Jürgen Klinsmann Date of birth: 30 July 1964 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Stuttgarter Kickers, VfB Stuttgart, FC Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, FC Bayern München, UC Sampdoria Coaching career: Germany, FC Bayern München One of the finest strikers in the world in the late 80s and early 90s, Jürgen Klinsmann is looking to prove just as inspirational on the bench as he was on the pitch, helping to triumph at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and then winning EURO '96™ with a reunited Germany team. He retired from international football with 47 goals in 108 appearances, making him the second most-capped player in German history. Working under the likes of Arsène Wenger and Giovanni Trapattoni during a club career which took in spells at VfB Stuttgart, FC Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC and FC Bayern München, Klinsmann has worked with plenty of great coaches. Scoring well over 200 league goals, Klinsmann was an exceptional talent, even though he was to end his club career with only two major trophies – the 1990/91 UEFA Cup won with Inter and the 1995/96 edition won at Bayern. Initially it seemed that Klinsmann had turned his back on football after hanging up his boots in 1998, moving to the United States to work in sports marketing. However, he made several appearances for Orange County Blue Star in California under the pseudonym Jay Goppingen – a reference to his home town – in 2003 to keep his eye in, before accepting the job of Germany coach in July 2004. Hired to lead the national team as hosts at the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in tandem with his assistant and eventual successor Joachim Löw, Klinsmann's young side shone on the way to taking bronze. Stepping down despite clamour for him to stay on, Klinsmann said he yearned for normal family life but he was eventually tempted back to football by his old side, Bayern, replacing Ottmar Hitzfeld in July 2008.

UEFA information

Champions League final visual identity unveiled UEFA has unveiled its new visual identity for the 2009 UEFA Champions League final in Rome, a design which combines the trophy with the ancient Roman symbol of victory, a laurel wreath. The new identity reflects the city's history, architectural heritage and passion for football. The identity will appear in promotional material, tickets and web banners. It will also be supplied to all the official sponsors of the UEFA Champions League for use in publicity material and activities ahead of the final at the on Wednesday 27 May. Produced by the London-based graphic design and branding agency Radiant, its objective is to help promote the final and enhance the prestige of one of the world's biggest sporting events. Tickets for the final, the last to be held in midweek, will go on sale from 16 February. The match will be watched by a television audience of some 150 million people in more than 230 countries and territories. "It is about harmonising the symbols of victory of ancient times with those of today," said UEFA competitions director Giorgio Marchetti, "and what better setting for our modern trophy than Rome." Italian Football Federation vice-president Demetrio Albertini, who lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup three times with AC Milan, said: "Coming to the world's most beautiful city, we want to stage the most beautiful Champions League final so far. There is an embarrassment of riches in this city for travelling fans and we are prioritising security so that children and families will have no doubts about coming along to make up the crowd." Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno described next year's showpiece as more that just a sporting occasion. "This is a great honour for the city to host such an event," Alemanno said. "It is a social event and we want to show the world what this great city can do." Support for Respect Europe's top coaches and managers have spoken out in strong support of UEFA's Respect campaign, with Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri stressing how "respect means everything" in today's game. UEFA's Respect campaign relates to the fight against social ills such as racism, violence, xenophobia and homophobia, allied to respect for the rules of the game, match officials, one's own club, the opposing club, team-mates, fellow footballers and supporters alike. "I think respect means everything, because respect also means accepting defeat and being able to appreciate your opponents' football if they played better," Ranieri said. "That's respect for me. Respect your neighbour as you would your own self – that comes first." Manchester United FC manager Sir Alex Ferguson also considers the sport to be going through a crucial period. "I think this is maybe a watershed for the game," he said. "There's been, over the years, an increase in attempts to manipulate the referee such as players crowding around the referees, and it can't do the referee's confidence any good – you're undermining his authority. The backing-off process and respect of decisions is a step we hope will improve the quality of referees and the game itself." Technical report issued UEFA has issued its report on the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League – a document designed to help technicians by identifying trends and supplying important data on events in last season's edition of the competition. The UEFA Champions League technical report offers talking points on key issues, analyses the present and lays the foundations for further enhancement of the club competition which is hailed by the critics as the best in the world. This season's report has again been given the valuable input of some of Europe's most respected coaching figures and, as usual, contains a wealth of important and interesting statistics. "In football, there is no time to rest on laurels, least of all in the UEFA Champions League," the report says. "The past, however, can be used as the basis for future improvement." Eat for Goals! book launched UEFA and the World Heart Federation have launched a cookery book with the support of the European Union, with 13 top players contributing to Eat for Goals! to underline that healthy food is crucial to a healthy lifestyle. Top stars such as Miroslav Klose, Steven Gerrard, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Birgit Prinz have contributed favourite recipes and dietary advice to the book, which it is hoped will encourage children to take care over what they eat. Eat for Goals! was created for children aged five to eleven, and has been published in English, French and German by Falkemedia. Copies can be ordered online at www.falkemedia-shop.de and €1 from each book sold will go to the World Heart Federation's programmes promoting an active lifestyle for children. "The world of football has long inspired people of any age and gender to exercise; it has now set out to inspire them to eat well too," said UEFA director of communications William Gaillard.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders Manchester United FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real CF on Matchday 6. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Six other teams have gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06) and RSC Anderlecht (2004/05) plus FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage). Dynamo also conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2007/08, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06. Last updated: 25.10.2008

Team facts

ACF Fiorentina UEFA club competition milestones • Victory in the 1960/61 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final remains Fiorentina’s crowning European achievement but they have reached three other continental finals, losing all. They triumphed 2-0 away and 2-1 at home against Rangers FC to take the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup trophy, having lost out to Real Madrid CF (2-0) in the European Champion Clubs' Cup showpiece four years earlier. They failed to defend their title as Club Atlético de Madrid beat them 4-1 on aggregate in the final 12 months later. They also lost to Juventus in the 1989/90 UEFA Cup final. UEFA Champions League milestones • Fiorentina have only previously competed in one UEFA Champions League season, finishing second behind FC Barcelona in the first group stage of the 1999/00 before losing out to holders Manchester United FC and eventual runners-up Valencia CF in the second group stage. Fiorentina also reached the final of the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1957, losing 2-0 to Real Madrid CF in Madrid, and went down to Celtic FC in the 1969/70 quarter-finals. Their Coppa Italia campaign was ended by a 4-2 defeat against S.S. Lazio over the two legs of their quarter-final. European record: Fiorentina started their UEFA Cup campaign in the first round, edging out FC Groningen 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after both legs had finished 1-1. A 6-1 home win against IF Elfsborg was the highlight of their Group C fixtures which ended with the Viola in second place behind Villarreal CF, before Rosenborg BK were dispatched 3-1 on aggregate in the Round of 32. The Florence club then overcame Everton FC on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw in the last 16 and then beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 in the quarter-finals, but after their semi-final tie with Rangers FC had finished goalless after two legs, the Italian side went down 4-2 on penalties in front of their home supporters. FC Bayern München UEFA club competition milestones • Four-time European champions, Bayern have reached seven European Champion Clubs' Cup finals and, together with AFC Ajax, dominated the competition during the 1970s by claiming three successive trophies, beating Club Atlético de Madrid (1973/74), Leeds United AFC (1974/75) and AS Saint-Etienne (1975/76). UEFA Cup Winners' Cup victors in 1966/67, Bayern completed the European club football hat-trick by seeing off FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup final. UEFA Champions League milestones • Two years after the heartbreak of conceding two last-gasp goals to lose the final against Manchester United FC, Bayern claimed their fourth European Cup – and their only one since the onset of the UEFA Champions League – in 2000/01 when they overcame Valencia CF on penalties. Last season was the first edition Bayern had not taken part in since 1996/97.
