MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2018 HISTORY UP NORTH In an away tilt on July 29th against the Chicago White Sox, Toronto Blue Jays infi elder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. collected three hits to go along with a pair of RBI to lead the Blue Jays to a 7-4 victory. Posting his third consecutive outing with at least two hits and two RBI, the Cuban native tied Josh Donaldson (September 15-17, 2017) for the second-longest such streak in Blue Jays history. Two-time All-Star John Olerud recorded a streak of four straight games from June 21-25, 1990 to pace the franchise. In addition, the multi-hit eff ort extended his career-best hitting streak to 11 games dating back to July 11th. Gurriel, who tallied at least two hits in each contest during his streak, established a new franchise record for the most consecutive multi-hit outings, eclipsing the previous mark set by fi ve-time All-Star Tony Fernández (June 18-27, 1986). The 24-year-old became just the sixth player since at least 1908 to post a multi-hit streak of at least 11 games in a single season, joining Hall of Famers Rogers Hornsby, Tony Perez, Paul Waner and Sam Rice, as well as Shoeless Joe Jackson. Moreover, the right-handed-hitting slugger became the fi rst rookie in Major League history to accomplish the feat. Over the course of his outstanding month, Gurriel, who earned AL Rookie of the Month honors for July, tallied at least one hit in every game he started (16) and fi nished the month with a .423/.438/.648 slash line.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION (May 16, 2002) ncbwa.com FORMER COLLEGE PLAYERS ON 2002 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROSTERS CHICAGO – Nearly 500 former collegians appear on the current 40-man rosters of major league teams, according to research done by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Some of the game’s brightest stars showed off their talents on the collegiate diamond before moving on to “The Show.” The last two National League Most Valuable Players, Barry Bonds (Arizona State) and Jeff Kent (California), 2000 American League MVP Jason Giambi (Long Beach State) and both of last year’s Cy Young Award winners, Roger Clemens (Texas) and Randy Johnson (USC) are among those that starred in the collegiate ranks. Perennial All-Stars Nomar Garciaparra (Georgia Tech), Frank Thomas (Auburn), Barry Larkin (Michigan), Todd Helton (Tennessee), Jeff Bagwell (Hartford), Kevin Brown (Georgia Tech) and Mike Mussina (Stanford) are a few more examples of quality performers from the college ranks. A complete list of former collegians on current major league squads are listed below. The NCBWA welcomes any additions or corrections to this list. Please e-mail to [email protected].
