John E. Privett, Archbishop March 23, 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, I look forward to welcoming you to our 63rd Synod of the Diocese of Kootenay, April 20- 22, 2018. This year we will again meet at our Diocesan Centre in Kelowna. Our Synod Planning Committee of Nissa Basbaum, Trevor Freeman, Kathryn Lockhart, Anne McMichael, Richard Simpson, Austin Spry and Pam Wilson have been working for several months to prepare for our gathering and I am grateful to each of them for their leadership. Our theme this year is adapted from St. Paul’s letters - Though we are many, we all belong to each other. It speaks to the importance of our diocesan life as a community of congregations across this beautiful part of British Columbia. We will gather to hear addresses on congregational vitalization by The Rev. Dr. Jay Koyle, Congregational Development Officer for the Diocese of Algoma, Anglican Church of Canada and chair of the national church committee Faith, Worship and Ministry. We will also welcome our Primate, The Most Rev. Fred Hiltz, who will preach at our opening Eucharist and be present with us throughout the Synod. We are indeed fortunate to have him with us, to share his own pastoral presence and to bring a perspective from the Church beyond our own setting. It will be good to be together to celebrate our life as a Diocese and to nurture the important bonds of affection that bind us together. During this Synod we will consider a new electoral canon, have an opportunity to think about the proposed changes to our marriage canon to include same sex couples, and receive a major report from the work of our Congregational Futures working group. We know that many of our congregations are experiencing the challenges of aging populations and shrinking resources. The Congregational Futures Report will address the question of how we intentionally nurture our communities of faith and so strengthen our mission for the future. We will also gather to elect new members to diocesan committees and to discuss some essential business in the life of the diocese. Our diocesan committees are very important in the ongoing life of our Church and I hope you will consider letting your name stand for nomination to one of them. …/2 Living Faith, Proclaiming Christ, Growing Churches, Empowering Mission -2- This convening circular will provide important information for you with respect to details of Synod, information on how the Synod will unfold, and the location of our meetings and accommodations. I encourage you to review the materials prior to arriving. A synod is more than a business meeting. It is a time when we gather in Christ's name to seek God's guidance for our Church. It is an opportunity to worship with people from other congregations, to learn from one another and to encourage one another. It is a time to celebrate the many blessings of our life together. I offer my prayers for each of you as you prepare for this time together and I ask your prayers for our Synod as the day approaches. See you in Kelowna in April! Archbishop John Living Faith, Proclaiming Christ, Growing Churches, Empowering Mission Diocese of Kootenay Synod April 20-22, 2018 Though we are many, we all belong to each other. Kelowna, BC Romans 12:5 Welcome to Synod 2018 Synod Prayer Loving and faithful God, we give you thanks for our life together in Kootenay. We give you thanks that you have blessed and guided your church in this Diocese over the years and have given us the gifts needed for your mission here. As we gather together in Synod 2018, we ask your blessing upon our worship, our discussions and our decisions, that though we are many we will be strengthened in the work that you set before us, so that together we may be signs and channels of your love in our neighbourhoods and beyond, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN Keynote Speaker The Rev. Dr. Jay Koyle has a long and fruitful history of fostering congregational vitality and growth. After many years’ experience as both a parish pastor and a professor on a Faculty of Theology, Jay now serves as Congregational Development Officer for the Diocese of Algoma, Anglican Church of Canada. His thesis addresses the relationship between preaching, discipleship formation, and the revitalization of congregations in the 21st Century. Jay is past president of The Associated Parishes for Liturgy and Mission, and has contributed to a variety of journals, online forums, and a recent book on discipleship formation published by Augsburg Fortress. In both he United States and Canada, Jay has been acclaimed as an inspirational speaker and leader who brings a terrific sense of humour and an uplifting Christian message. The Most Rev. Author of twenty-four volumes on ike History, Geography and Biography of Canada and General Literature Printed and Published by JOHN LOVELL & SON, LIMITED MONTREAL 1910. CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, MONTREAL. DEDICATION MY LORD It gives me much pleasure to dedicate this important work, "The History of the Diocese of Montreal," to your Lordship. Your election and elevation to the highest office of the Church in this Diocese, is a proof of the estimation in which your Lordship is held by both your Clergy and Laity. May an even greater prosperity attend your oversight of the spiritual and temporal affairs of the Diocese under your guidance, and that it will advance as rapidly in the future as it has done in the past, is my earnest prayer. Praying that your Lordship may long be spared to be our Bishop, I remain Your sincere Presbyter, J. DOUGLAS BORTHWICK, LL.D. PREFACE IN the Jubilee year of the Diocese of Montreal, A.D. 1900, I was requested by several prominent persons, both Clerical and Lay, to write an historical sketch of the Diocese for the past 50 years. What I did write then was printed in one or two of the Montreal newspapers. In this Jubilee Year, 1909, of The Synod of Montreal, which was founded and opened on the /th day of June, 1859, I was again asked to extend and elaborate what I had then written, and thus make it a volume which could be kept as a "Vade Mecum" and Book of Reference for succeeding generations.
