The fullest expression of the whig interpretation of western Canadian history is to be found in the works of George F.G. Stanley and W.L. Morton. In presenting a narrative reconstruction of the events surrounding Canada's annexation of Red River, these authors primarily attempt to justify Canadian policy as the extension of British civilization. -

www.canadiancharitylaw.ca Which Canadian charities had the largest assets in 2014? By Mark Blumberg (March 23, 2016) We recently reviewed the T3010 information for 2014. It covers about 84,370 of the 86,000 registered charities that have so far filed their return and that have been entered into the CRA’s database. Canadian registered charities are currently required to disclose on the T3010 their assets. The total assets of all the 84,370 registered charities were about $373,050,327,255.00. Below we have a table of Canadian charities and how much they spent as reported for the 2014 fiscal year. Thank you to Celeste Bonas, an intern at Blumbergs, for helping with this project. The Sean Blumberg Transparency Project is in memory of my youngest brother Sean Blumberg. Sean was a sweet, kind person, a great brother who helped me on a number of occasions with many tasks including the time consuming and arduous task of reviewing T3010 databases and making them into something useful. As part of the Sean Blumberg Transparency Project, Blumbergs has been releasing information on the Canadian charity sector to provide a better understanding of the size, scope, complexity and challenges of the sector. Anglican Archives in Rupert's Land by WILMA MACDONALD Until 1870 the vast area which is now northern Quebec and Ontario, the prairies, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and portions of British Columbia was known as Rupert's Land. Prince Rupert, with sixteen associates, who were incorporated by Letters Patent as the Honourable the Hudson's Bay Company, was granted this vast territory in 1670 by King Charles 11. The new trading company acquired a region extending over 2,700,000 square miles. To protect its lucrative and increasing fur trade, the company successfully resisted attempts to colonize the territory. No effort was made to minister to the few Christian people in the widely scattered forts of the Hudson's Bay Company or to evangelize the native peoples until the early nineteenth century. In 1820, some six years after the tenacious Orkney Islanders established an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Red River, guided there by the Earl of Selkirk, the company sent out an Anglican chaplain, the Reverend John West (1778-1846). Although West was appointed to minister to the company's officers and servants, he also looked after the needs of the small Scottish colony and took great interest in the Indians. He established a school in the Red River settlement on a lot of land set apart for church purposes by thecompany (on which the Cathedral Church of St. John now stands in Winnipeg). West's efforts laid the foundations for missionary work and also marked the beginning of formal education in Manitoba. The small school he began in 1820 was followed by the Red River Academy, founded by John Macallurn and revived by Bishop David Anderson. -

Francis Andrew Brewin, “He Who Would Valiant Be”: The Makings of a Canadian Anglican Christian Socialist JOHN BREWIN1 Francis Andrew Brewin (1907-1983) was a formative figure in the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and later in the New Democratic Party. He helped to shape a party that shaped Canada. FAB, as I shall refer to him, was a lifelong “practising” Anglican. He represented a significant Anglican contribution to the Canadian polity. His religious sensibilities led to his decision to join the CCF in 1935 and determined the nature of his participation. This paper focuses on FAB’s decision to join the CCF, and examines the cultures that interacted to produce that decision. It will be argued that his religion and his politics were completely integrated. In his context it made sense for FAB to become a democratic socialist of the Canadian variety. The paper’s methodology is influenced by the approach of Clifford Geertz, as described by Aletta Biersack.2 The decision by FAB to join and to become active in the CCF is best understood as a cultural event, the convergence of cultures that gave FAB his world-view and informed his actions. I will, therefore, look at each of the main sources of FAB’s cultural perspective. In revisiting the way in which one Christian of a particular tradition responded to the problems of his day, one might glimpse how we might respond to the almost overwhelming social, economic and environmental challenges of our own day. ‘A Step along the Path’ On Friday, August 6, 1993 at the National Native Convocation in Minaki, Ontario, Archbishop Michael Peers offered an apology to all the survivors of the Indian residential schools. Shaped by his listening to their stories, and his devotion to healing and reconciliation, he said, “I want to take one step along that path here and now.” And with that he said, “I accept and I confess before God and you, our failures in the residential schools. We failed you. We failed ourselves. We failed God. “I am sorry, more than I can say, that we were part of a system which took you and your children from home and family. “I am sorry, more than I can say, that we tried to remake you in our image, taking from you your language and the signs of your identity. “I am sorry, more than I can say, that in our schools so many were abused physically, sexually, culturally and emotionally. “On behalf of the Anglican Church of Canada, I present our apology.” Not only did Michael say, “I am sorry,” he also said, “I know how often you have heard words which have been empty because they have not been accompanied by actions. I pledge to you my best efforts, and the efforts of our church at the national level, to walk with you along the path of God’s healing.” That was twenty years ago—to this very day. Then and there the apology was offered—quietly and prayerfully. The next day Vi Smith, speaking on behalf of the elders and participants, said, “It was offered from the heart with sincerity, sensitivity, compassion and humility.. -

My family and I are most grateful to all of you who offered prayerful, loving and moral support to us. In a pastoral letter to the cler- gy and people of York-Simcoe, I wrote that my recent illness was a life-altering experience for me. When we face such challenges in our lives, we tend to view life in a very different light than before. I am learning to pay very close attention to the signs and FIRST LIGHT signals that I receive from my Youth at St. Joseph of Nazareth, Bramalea, practice lighting the Advent wreath. A candle will be lit each week during Advent, followed by the lighting of the middle body. I encourage others to do candle on Christmas Eve. Advent starts on Dec. 1. PHOTO BY MICHAEL HUDSON the same.
