Various system enhancements have been identified that improve the use of this weapon system. These include the addition of a feedtray cover rail and forward rail assemblies. The addition of these rails provides a Military-Standard-1913 interface allowing the mounting of standard military optics and other target designation devices directly to the machine gun. Improved components include a collapsible buttstock, bipod, drop-in mount cradle and 200- round ammunition pack. Other items being procured to enhance Soldier performance include design modifications to the lightweight ground mount, short barrel, short barrel blank firing adapter, improved sling assembly and improved extractor and op-rod kits. The M197 Vehicle Mount is the current standard used to mount the M249 SAW and M240B Medium Machine Gun to most vehicle platforms. A system improvement (drop in mount cradle) adds a link/spent case deflector and ammo handling system to provide capability upgrades addressing issues that Soldiers have identified as shortcomings of the current system. The M192 is the primary ground mount for the M240B/L and M249 machine guns. Based on recent combat experience, improvements are required to address identified shortcomings in the design and to enhance operational performance. The M249 SAW when deployed with a collapsible buttstock and short barrel it reduces the overall weapon length by 10 inches, when compared to the standard issue M249 SAW. The shorter length improves Military Operation in Urban Terrain (MOUT) and Airborne/Air Assault Operations. It allows for easier egress and entrance into vehicles and confined areas, also facilitates clearing operation in current urban combat environments. Improvements to the short barrel will also increase durability and enhance the operability by the Warfighter. The shortened M249 SAW improves survivability in extended missions and close combat situations encountered in current war-time deployments. The M197 MWO Kit (drop-in mount cradle) upgrades the existing M197 Vehicle Mounts to add a link/spent case deflector and ammo handling system. These upgrades provide capability improvements addressing issues that Soldiers have identified as shortcomings of the current system. The M192 MWO Kit upgrades the primary lightweight ground mount used for the M249 to address shortcomings detected during recent combat excursions. In accordance with Section 1815 of the FY2008 National Defense Authorization Act (P.L. 110-181), this item is necessary for use by the active and reserve components of the Armed Forces for homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and providing military support to civil authorities.     NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Bob Was a Shoo-Shoo Every boy that grew up in New Orleans (at least in my age group) that managed to get himself into the least bit of mischief knows that the local expression for a firecracker that doesn’t go off is a “shoo-shoo”. It means a dud, something that may have started off hot, but ended in a fizzle. It just didn’t live up to its expectations. It could also be used to describe other things that didn’t deliver the desired wallop, such as an over-promoted “hot date” or even a tropical storm that (fortunately) wasn’t as damaging as its forecast. Back in 1968, I thought for a moment that I was that “dud” date, but was informed by the young lady I was escorting that she had called me something entirely different. “Chou chou” (pronounced exactly like shoo-shoo) was a reduplicative French term of endearment, meaning “my little cabbage”. Being a “petite” healthy leafy vegetable was somehow a lot better than being a non-performing firecracker. At least I wasn’t the only one. In 2009 the Daily Mail reported on a “hugely embarrassing video” in which Carla Bruni called Nicolas Sarkozy my ‘chou chou’ and “caused a sensation across France”. Bruni and Sarkozy: no “shoo-shoo” here The glamourous former model turned pop singer planted a passionate kiss on the French President and then whispered “‘Bon courage, chou chou’, which means ‘Be brave, my little darling’.” The paper explained, “A ‘chou’ is a cabbage in French, though when used twice in a row becomes a term of affection between young lovers meaning ‘little darling’.” I even noticed in the recent French movie “Populaire” that the male lead called his rapid-typing secretary and love interest “chou”, which somehow became “pumpkin” in the subtitles.

The AK-47, for example, is actually no more lethal than most other small arms in its class, but popular notoriety and Hollywood representations tend to credit it with superior power and lethality. Similarly, the bayonet actually killed relatively few men in World War I, but the sheer thought of an enraged foe bearing down on you with more than 30cm of sharpened steel was the stuff of nightmares to both sides. In some cases, however, fear has been perfectly justified. During both world wars, for example, artillery caused between 59 and 80 per cent of all casualties (depending on your source), and hence took a justifiable top slot in surveys of most feared tools of violence. The subjects of this book – the MG 34 and MG 42, plus derivatives – are interesting case studies within the scale of soldiers’ fears. Regarding the latter weapon, a US wartime information movie once declared that the gun’s ‘bark was worse than its bite’, no doubt a well-intentioned comment intended to reduce mounting concern among US troops about the firepower of this astonishing gun.

    USA M14 Rifle The M14 rifle, officially the United States Rifle, Caliber 7.62 mm, M14, is an American select-fire battle rifle that fires 7.62×51mm NATO (.308 in) ammunition. It became the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military in 1959 replacing the M1 Garand rifle in the U.S. Army by 1958 and the U.S. Marine Corps by 1965 until being replaced by the M16 rifle beginning in 1968. The M14 was used by U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps for basic and advanced individual training (AIT) from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. The M14 was developed from a long line of experimental weapons based upon the M1 Garand rifle. Although the M1 was among the most advanced infantry rifles of the late 1930s, it was not an ideal weapon. Modifications were already beginning to be made to the basic M1 rifle's design during the last months of World War II. Changes included adding fully automatic firing capability and replacing the eight-round en bloc clips with a detachable box magazine holding 20 rounds. Winchester, Remington, and Springfield Armory's own John Garand offered different conversions. Garand's design, the T20, was the most popular, and T20 prototypes served as the basis for a number of Springfield test rifles from 1945 through the early 1950s Production contracts Initial production contracts for the M14 were awarded to the Springfield Armory, Winchester, and Harrington & Richardson.
