Ethan’s 2013 OSCAR Party Speech By Ethan Itkin 2012 was a great for movies. From enjoyable surprises (ParaNorman) to the old master at work (Lincoln) to the debut director and actress (Beasts of the Southern Wild). And (minus Wreck It- Ralph), the Oscar’s did a mostly fine job nominating the best work from the last year. From Best Costume Design to Best Picture, the nominees resemble the return of great movies. The 2010’s were off to a bad start with 2010 and some of 2011. But with 2012 directors like Benh Zeitlin, Ang Lee, Peter Jackson, Peter Ramsey, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hooper, Wes Anderson, Malik Bendejoul, Peter Lord, and many, many more brought the cinematic back to the cinema. And now...the predictions! Here is the film, directors, actors, actresses, and screenwriters that I think will be handed the golden man. Best Picture: Argo Best Director: Ben Affleck (Argo) Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) Best Supporting Actor: Robert de Niro (Silver Linings Playbook) Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) Best Original Screenplay: Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty) Best Adapted Screenplay: Tony Kushner (Lincoln) For our Oscar Party we’ve selected two of the previously mentioned director’s wonderful works. Congratulations Mr. Anderson and Mr. Lord...The two films we are showing tonight are both nominated for one Oscar. In the den, we will be showing The Pirates! Band of Misfits. It was nominated for Best Animated Film. (Sadly though, in my opinion, it has the smallest chance of winning.) Peter Lord’s sixteenth feature film, it is a laugh-out-loud adventure that is intricately animated. It features a talented voice cast. They are: Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, Martin Freeman, Imelda Staunton, David Tennant, Brian Blessed, Anton Yelchin, Brendan Gleeson, and more. The film was released on April 27th and was unfortunately not a massive box office success. However, it received a fresh 86% on rottentomatoes.com. All facts aside, it’s a great film and anyone who opts to watch it will have a great time. In the living room, we will be showing Moonrise Kingdom. It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay (if you haven’t looked at our copy of it, you can do so later). Wes Anderson’s eighth feature, it is a hilarious, yet heartfelt film that has everything from Cub Scouts to a soundtrack of delights. The film is a radiant masterpiece, a true indie shocker. It features a varied, but superb cast. They are: Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Bob Balaban, and many, many more. The film was released on June 29th and was also unfortunately not a massive box office smash. But, it received 94% on rottentomatoes.com. If you choose to watch Anderson’s wonder you won’t be disappointed. That’s all folks...almost! I hope you enjoyed my speech! Friday 14 February 2020, London. BFI Southbank’s TILDA SWINTON season, programmed in partnership with the performer and filmmaker herself, will run from 1 – 18 March 2020, celebrating the extraordinary, convention-defying career of one of cinema’s finest and most deft chameleons. The BFI today announce that a number of Swinton’s closest collaborators will join her on stage during the season to speak about their work together including Wes Anderson (Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom), Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Okja), Sally Potter (Orlando) and Joanna Hogg (The Souvenir, Caprice). Also announced today is Tilda Swinton’s Film Equipment (28 February – 26 April) a free exhibit to accompany the season which has been curated in close collaboration with BFI and Swinton’s personal archive. Alongside a programme of feature film screenings, shorts and personal favourites, the season will include Tilda Swinton in Conversation with host Mark Kermode on 3 March, during which Swinton will look back on her wide- reaching career as a performer across independent and Hollywood cinema, as well as producer, director and general ally of maverick free spirits everywhere. On the same evening will be Tilda Swinton and Wes Anderson on stage: A Magical Tour of Cinema – a unique chance to hear from two of the most fervent disciples of the church of make believe, as Swinton and Anderson take to the BFI stage to discuss their many collaborations and their film passions. The event will offer a glimpse into their intimate partnership as the two long-time co-conspirators and voracious cinephiles select and explore personal favourite gems from throughout cinema’s history.

Epilogue itchcock and his works continue to experience life among generation Y Hand beyond, though it is admittedly disconcerting to walk into an undergraduate lecture hall and see few, if any, lights go on at the mention of his name. Disconcerting as it may be, all ill feelings are forgotten when I watch an auditorium of eighteen- to twenty-one-year-olds transported by the emotions, the humor, and the compulsions of his cinema. But certainly the college classroom is not the only guardian of Hitchcock ’ s fl ame. His fi lms still play at retrospectives, in fi lm festivals, in the rising number of fi lm studies classes in high schools, on Turner Classic Movies, and other networks devoted to the “ oldies. ” The wonderful Bates Motel has emerged as a TV serial prequel to Psycho , illustrating the formative years of Norman Bates; it will see a second season in the coming months. Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour are still in strong syndication. Both his fi lms and television shows do very well in collections and singly on Amazon and other e-commerce sites.

In the pledge the high profile women, who also include activists and politicians, have vowed to support: • An investigation into rape and sexual violence by the Burmese military against ethnic women and girls. • An end to impunity for rape and other forms of sexual violence in Burma. • Support for victims. • The inclusion of women at every political level in Burma including the peace negotiations between the Burmese government and the ethnic armed political groups. • Burma’s Rape Law to be in line with international human rights standards to outlaw rape in marriage. Rape and sexual violence by the Burmese army • The use of rape and sexual violence by Burma’s armed forces is ongoing with impunity and reports of rape have increased over the last years. • Although winning a landslide victory in national elections in November 2015, the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, will not have control over the Burmese army when it takes office in April 2016. Therefore, there is a possibility that army rape will continue even with the new NLD-led government in place.
