BUTTERFLIES FROM THE MIDDLE EOCENE: THE EARLIEST OCCURRENCE OF FOSSIL PAPILIONOIDEA (LEPIDOPTERA) 1 Christopher J. Durden 2 and Hugh Rose 3 ABSTRACT Three fossil butterflies recently collected from the Green River Shale of Colorado extend the known range of Rhopalocera eight to ten million years back, to 48 Ma. Praepapilio Colorado n. g., n. sp., and P. gracilis n. sp. are primitive Papilionidae related to the modern Baronia brevicornis Salvin, but they require a new subfamily, Praepapilioninae. Riodinella nympha n. g., n. sp. is a primitive member of the Lycaenidae, related to modern Ancyluris, Riodina, and Rhetus, in the tribe Riodinidi. INTRODUCTION With approximately 194,000 living species, the Lepidoptera is, after the Coleoptera with some 350,000, species, the second most diverse order of organisms. It is underrepresented in the fossil record (Scudder 1875, 1891, 1892; Handlirsch 1925;Mackay 1970;Kuhne 1973; Shields 1976). -

The purpose of this plan is to provide a guide to manage, in the most efficient and effective manner, the noxious weeds on the US Air Force Academy (Academy) and Farish Recreation Area (Farish) over the next 10 years (through 2025), in accordance with their respective integrated natural resources management plans. This plan pertains to the “natural” portions of the Academy and excludes highly developed areas, such as around buildings, recreation fields, and lawns. -

(Lycaena Dorcas) from Nova Scotia
J. Acad. Entomol. Soc. 8: 41-42 (2012) NOTE The first record of Dorcas Copper Lycaena( dorcas) from Nova Scotia John Klymko, C. Sean Blaney, and Don G. Anderson Dorcas Copper (Lycaena dorcas W. Kirby) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) is a medium-sized copper (Lycaeninae) known from every Canadian province and territory except Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, and, prior to 2011, Nova Scotia (Layberry et al. 1998). In the Maritime Provinces, the species is rare, previously known only from Carleton and York Counties in western New Brunswick (Maritimes Butterfly Atlas 2011). Throughout its range, Dorcas Copper is typically associated with its larval host plant shrubby cinquefoil (Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (Pursh) Kartesz) (Rosaceae)) (Layberry et al. 1998). However, it occurs in Wisconsin peatlands lacking shrubby cinquefoil (Nekola 1998), and has been recorded ovipositing on small cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos Turcz. ex Rupr. (Ericaceae)) and sweet gale (Myrica gale L. (Myricaceae)) (Handfield 2011). In the Maritimes, Dorcas Copper is known only from rich fens with shrubby cinquefoil, a habitat type that is rare in the region. On 21 July 2010, C.S. Blaney and D.M. Mazerolle discovered a Dorcas Copper colony while conducting a botanical inventory at the Black River Fen, a large complex of calcareous wetlands east of Lake Ainslie, Inverness County (46.1554°N, 61.2888°W) that includes several patches of calcareous fen. The site is an exceptional one for Nova Scotia, supporting many plant species that are characteristic of highly calcareous fens elsewhere in northeastern North America, but which are very rare in Nova Scotia. Volume 7 Number 1 1 May 2007 The Taxonomic Report OF THE INTERNATIONAL LEPIDOPTERA SURVEY A Description of a New Subspecies of Lycaena phlaeas (Lycaenidae: Lycaeninae) from Montana, United States, With a Comparative Study of Old and New World Populations Steve Kohler 125 Hillcrest Loop, Missoula, Montana 59803 United States of America Abstract: The Palaearctic, Oriental and Ethiopian Region subspecies of Lycaena phlaeas are briefly discussed. A more detailed account of the North American subspecies is presented, and a new subspecies, L. p. weberi, from the Sweet Grass Hills, Montana is described. The possibility that the eastern United States subspecies hypophlaeas was introduced from the Old World is discussed; however no conclusion can be reached with certainty. The relationship between Old World and New World subspecies of L. phlaeas is discussed. Evidence presented supports the treatment of New World populations as subspecies of L. phlaeas. Additional key words: Polygonaceae, Rumex acetosella, R. acetosa, R. crispus, Oxyria digyna. INTRODUCTION Lycaena phlaeas (Linnaeus, 1761) is a widespread species with subspecies in Europe, North Africa, Arabia, northern Asia, Japan, North America and tropical Africa. The nominate subspecies occurs in northern Europe (Ackery et al., 1995). Shields & Montgomery (1966) mentioned that European texts list Polygonaceae (Rumex and Polygonum) as larval foodplants for L. phlaeas subspecies. Flight period is April to November, in one to four generations, depending on local conditions; over-wintering is in the larval stage (Tuzov, 2000). Bridges (1988) listed 19 subspecies in his catalogue, not including the North American ones. Miller and Brown (1981) listed five subspecies for North America. Ford (1924) attempted to cover the world-wide geographic races of L. -

Pierce PHYLOGENETIC HYPOTHESES OF THE PAPllIONOIDEA Although not for lack ofstudy, the evolutionary history of the rnajor lineages of "true" butterflies (Papilionoidea, including Hesperiidae) is still unknown, and multiple conflicting phylogenetic hypotheses exist in the literature. Assessing the systematic position of the metalmark butterflies (family Riodinidae) has been a particular challenge for this field. Furthermore, there is disagreement about the monophyly of this large group, which contains over 1,200 species. Most morphological studies place the riodinid butter flies as most closely related to the lycaenid butterflies, and identify the nymphalids as the closest relatives to this riodinid + lycaenid dade (Ehrlich and Ehrlich 1967; Kristensen 1976; Scott and Wright 1990; de jong et al. 1996a) (fig. 18.1A, B). These relationships have been inferred with a variety of phylogenetic methods and are supported by a number of adult, larval, and pupal synapomorphies, although few are universal or uniquely derived. An alternative hypothesis of the placement of the riodinids was proposed by Robbins (1988a). Based on a cladistic analysis of nine character states among four characters of the foreleg coxa, trochanter, and basal femur, Robb!ns suggested that the Riodinidae are more closely related to the Nymphalidae than to the Lycaenidae (fig. 18.1C), and split the lycaenids into two groups, which may not compose a monophyletic lineage: Lycaeninae-Theclinae Polyommatinae and Lipteninae-Poritjnae-Miletinae-Curetinae. (NEW Dec. 3, PAPILIO SERIES) 2008 GEOGRAPHIC VARIATION AND NEW TAXA OF WESTERN NORTH AMERICAN BUTTERFLIES, ESPECIALLY FROM COLORADO By James A. Scott & Michaels. Fisher, with some parts by David M. Wright, Stephen M. Spomer, Norbert G. Kondla, Todd Stout, Matthew C. Garhart, & Gary M. Marrone Introduction and Abstract Michael Fisher is currently updating the 1957 book Colorado Butterflies, by F. Martin Brown, J. Donald Eff, and Bernard Rotger (Fisher 2005a, 2005b, 2006). This project has emphasized the necessity of naming certain butterflies in Colorado and vicinity that are distinctive, but currently have no name, as part of our goal of applying correct species/ subspecies names to all Colorado butterflies. Eleven of those distinctive butterflies are named here, in the genera Anthocharis, Neominois, Asterocampa, Argynnis (Speyeria), Euphydryas, Lycaena, and Hesperia. New life histories are reported for species or subspecies of Neominois & Oeneis & Euphydryas & Lycaena that were recently described or recently elevated in status. Lycaena jlorUs differs in hostplant, egg morphology, and somewhat in a seta on 151 -stage larvae. We also report the results ofresearch elsewhere in North America that was needed to determine which of the current subspecies names should be applied to other butterflies in Colorado, in the genera Anthocharis, Neominois, Apodemia, Callophrys, At/ides, Euphilotes, PlebeJus, Polites, & Hylephila. This research has added additional species to the total of Colorado butterflies. Nomenclatural problems in Colorado Lycaena & Calloph1ys are settled with lectotypes and designations of type localities and two pending petitions to suppress toxotaxa. Difficulties with the ICZN Code in properly applying names to clines are explored, and new terminology is given to some necessary biological solutions.
