You can’t help but feel it, from the simplest indulgence of sipping café au lait in a sidewalk café to the nightly spectacle when the lights of Paris illuminate the evening sky. As capital to a nation once a monarchy, twice an empire, and five times a republic, monuments to Paris’s rich and intriguing history are everywhere. See yourself in this City of Light, where a stunning palace once home to royalty is now home to royal art, where gargoyles stare down upon you from the lofty ledges of legendary Notre-Dame, and where the iconic Eiffel Tower dominates the horizon. Visit Montmartre – a haven for artists – stroll along the Champs-Elysées at dusk, and discover the mystery of the Phantom in the Palais Garnier opera house. Admire the sumptuous apartments of Versailles and walk down its magnificent Hall of Mirrors, where the World War I peace treaty was signed, or go where Allied Forces landed on the shores of Normandy in 1944. And of course, savor the renowned flavors of France – wine and cheese – after a visit to the Eiffel Tower. A city of romance, elegance, light, and life, Paris is a city to visit time and time again. This exciting itinerary offers an ideal collection of well-designed excursions that will enhance your vacation experience, many of which are included for an unbeatable value. Space is limited and sure to sell out quickly, so sign up now and take advantage of this incredible offer that includes airfare. Remember you can save $500 per couple by booking prior to December 15, 2011. Share this unforgettable experience with fellow alumni as you discover the City of Light. • Against Expression?: Avant-Garde Aesthetics in Satie's" Parade"
Against Expression?: Avant-garde Aesthetics in Satie’s Parade A thesis submitted to the Division of Graduate Studies and Research of the University of Cincinnati In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC In the division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 2020 By Carissa Pitkin Cox 1705 Manchester Street Richland, WA 99352 [email protected] B.A. Whitman College, 2005 M.M. The Boston Conservatory, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Jonathan Kregor, Ph.D. Abstract The 1918 ballet, Parade, and its music by Erik Satie is a fascinating, and historically significant example of the avant-garde, yet it has not received full attention in the field of musicology. This thesis will provide a study of Parade and the avant-garde, and specifically discuss the ways in which the avant-garde creates a dialectic between the expressiveness of the artwork and the listener’s emotional response. Because it explores the traditional boundaries of art, the avant-garde often resides outside the normal vein of aesthetic theoretical inquiry. However, expression theories can be effectively used to elucidate the aesthetics at play in Parade as well as the implications for expressability present in this avant-garde work. The expression theory of Jenefer Robinson allows for the distinction between expression and evocation (emotions evoked in the listener), and between the composer’s aesthetical goal and the listener’s reaction to an artwork. This has an ideal application in avant-garde works, because it is here that these two categories manifest themselves as so grossly disparate.

This book, written by an Englishman who lived in Montmartre for 30 years and knew its famous habitués intimately, gives a vivid description. It reveals the truth behind the many legends, is packed with authentic stories about writers and painters whose names are now household words, and contains much hitherto unpublished information about the life and career of Modigliani, obtained from his family and friends. Much of the text was written in Montmartre amid the scenes described, and after personal consultation with survivors of the great days when Frédé presided over the Lapin Agile and Libion, patron of the Café de la Rotonde, was beginning to rival him in Montparnasse. It is the most complete account which has yet been written in English of the birth of Cubism and other contemporary movements in modern painting, and of the lives and loves that started them.
