These are followed by the listing of USGS and MGS publications of a general nature which deal with all of Minnesota. Chapter II contains publications from many organizations, individuals and journals. He inherited the spirit; his environment gave the motive; he achieved the career by virtue of his physical endowment, his high courage, and his mental and moral fitness. His interest in geology was• first aroused by his mother, an unusually gifted woman, and was fixed by early incidental opportunities for ob- servations in'Germany and Corsica, followed by a chance meeting with the German geologist, Noeggeratli, which led to his going to the mining school at Freiberg. He used his profession of mining engineer, but never devoted himself to it. He served his adopted science, geology, but not exclusively; yet his contributions to its principles and knowledge remain unchallenged after thirty to fifty years of later intensive research along the same lines. He cherished for forty years a dream of carrying out investigations in the archeology and ethnology of the Asiatic and European races and at the age of three score and ten realized it with that same thoroughness and devotion to truth which characterized all of his scientific studies.

Abstract (Limit: 200 words) The Buffalo aquifer is the principal source of ground-water supplies in the Moorhead, Minnesota area. The aquifer is an elongate, narrow deposit of sand and gravel, which locally contains water under confined conditions. Although the Buffalo aquifer contains about 270 billion gallons of water in storage, only 120 billion gal­ lons could be withdrawn. Largest well yields occur along the deep trough in the center of the aquifer. Induced streambed infiltration may be possible in certain areas where the stream overlies the aquifer and where the intervening lake sediments are thin or absent.
