ABSTRACT— Where associated with other ammonites Neodeshayesites, a group of Northern South American species, forms part of a Lower Albian or basal Middle Albian fauna. The supposed record of the genus from Aptian strata is based on inconclusive stratigraphical data or falacious listing of faunas from diff erent localities. CONSIDERATIONS ON THE SO-CALLED APTIAN could also be explained as a condensed deposit. However, OCCURRENCE OF NEODESHAYESITES all the other criteria for a condensed deposit are missing.." In 1954, E. Accepted 30 March 201 0 A new heteromorphammonite genus, Tarrantites, is proposed for Hamites adkinsi Scott, 1928. The description of the new genus is based mainly on a near<omplete specimen from the Middle Albian part of the G:1odland Limestone of Tarrant County, Texas, the holotype, and on an abraded mould on a pebble from the bed of a stream in Hill County, Texas. In addition, we record the presence of the genus in the Albian of Pakistan. Tarrantites shows a remarkable resemblance to the labeceratine genera Labeceras Spath, 1925 and Myloeeras Spath, 1925: in coiling and size to the former, and in ornamentation to the latter, but is excluded from the subfamily Labeceratinae Spath, 1925, because it has a distinct bifid adventive (A) lobe. This latterfeature, and the ornamentation, rather suggest affinities of Tarrantites with the family Anisoceratidae Hyatt, 1900. • Correlation of Albian European and Tethyan Ammonite Zonations and the Boundaries of the Albian Stage and Substages: Some Comments
Correlation of Albian European and Tethyan ammonite zonations and the boundaries of the Albian Stage and substages: some comments Hugh G. Owen Owen, H.G. Correlation of Albian European and Tethyan ammonite zonations and the boundaries of the Albian Stage and substages: some comments. — Scripta Geol., Spec. Issue 3: 129-149, 5 figs., Lei• den, December 1999. H.G. Owen, Department of Palaeontology, The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD, England (UK). Key words: Early Cretaceous, Albian Stage, ammonite zonation, European and Tethyan faunal provinces Although the so-called 'standard' ammonite zonation of the Albian contains index species which occur in the Tethyan province, the scheme largely reflects the faunal succession in the European fau• nal province with its endemic sonneratiinid and hoplitinid faunal elements. Workers in the Tethyan province, stretching from South America in the west to Australia in the east, including southern Africa, Madagascar and India, face problems in the correlation of their successions with this so-called 'standard' scheme. There are other problems in that the succession of hoplitinid ammonites used in the biostratigraphy of European Albian sediments allows a far more detailed zonation to be made than in the case of some of the longer time-ranging Tethyan forms. This paper comments on propos• als made recently for the delimiting of the base of the Albian Stage, and the Middle and Upper Sub- stages, based on ammonite faunas. New information which affects the Albian ammonite zonation in the European faunal province and its correlation with the Tethyan province is discussed. The current hierarchical framework of zones and subzones used in the European faunal province may prove to be unsatisfactory in interprovincial correlation and particularly if the lower boundary of the Albian Stage was placed within the current Leymeriella tardefurcata ammonite Zone, instead of at its base.

From the uppermost Barremian (Pseudocrioceras waagenoides Subzone) to the middle Aptian (Parahoplites melchioris Zone), specimens of Procheloniceras, Cheloniceras, Roloboceras, Megatyloceras and Epicheloniceras were collected in succession. In this paper we describe the various genera and species from this material and delimit precisely their stratigraphic positions. Our study shows that each genus or subgenus characterizes a discrete stratigraphic interval. In addition, the Cheloniceras meyendorffi (upper Bedoulian), Epicheloniceras debile, Epicheloniceras gracile, and Epicheloniceras buxtorfi (Gargasian = middle Aptian) subzones, originally defined in England by CASEY (1961a), are identified for the first time in the Lower Aptian stratotypic area of Cassis-La Bédoule. [email protected] Abstract: A very rich assemblage of 40 Molluscan species was identified from the Lower Cretaceous succession of Gabal Mistan and Um Mitmani lying at the extremity of the northern flank of Gabal Al-Maghara, northern Sinai. These are used to date the investigated material as Barremian and Aptian. Comparison of the Sinai material with coeval deposits in the northern Caucasus and Western Europe signifies a possible direct marine connection between these areas. [Hosni Hamama. On the basis of new and published palaeontological and stratigraphical data, the qualitative and quanti- tative variations in the Barremian-early Albian ammonite fauna of Colombia have been documented and analyzed. The position adopted here is that in the early Barremian the Andean Province became replaced by the Caribbean Subprovince in Colombia. The Caribbean Subprovince became separated as an independent unit from the Andean Province on the generic level (Buergliceras, Pedioceras), but especially on the species level. In the middle/upper Aptian many new endemic genera and subgenera appeared; Juandurhamiceras, Neodeshayesites, Laqueoceras, Zambranoites, Riedelites and Pseudoptychoceras. Besides, many endemic middle Aptian species of other, non-endemic genera appeared. Beginning from the middle Aptian the Caribbean area was a separate biogeographic enitity with the rank of Province; the Colombian region is considered to be the core area of the Caribbean Province.

1661-5468 VOL. 31, N° 1, 2012 Revue de Paléobiologie, Genève (juillet 2012) 31 (1): 159-170 ISSN 0253-6730 Knemiceras gracile DOUVILLÉ, 1916: a misunderstood Early Albian ammonite from north Sinai (Egypt), and considerations on the genus Platiknemiceras BATALLER, 1954 Jean-Louis LATIL1 & Mohamed Fouad ALY2 Abstract The taxonomic treatment of the Engonoceratoidea HYATT, 1900 (WRIGHT et al., 1996) is problematic and confusing, and recently has gained the attention of many paleontologists (ROBERT, 2002; BUJTOR, 2010; BULOT, 2010; LATIL, 2011). It appears that most of the described genera within this superfamily were based on morphological features, without stratigraphic and/or phylogenetic control. In particular, the genus Platiknemiceras BATALLER, 1954, seems to represent a classic example of this problem. Knemiceras gracile DOUVILLÉ, 1916, from the Early Albian of Maghara area, north Sinai, Egypt, referred by CASEY (1961) to Platiknemiceras, appears to be an often misinterpreted species. Species identified as members of the genus Platiknemiceras BATALLER, 1954 in the literature, from Iran, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Spain, France Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, USA and Japan are discussed herein, in order to revise their taxonomic positions. The type species, Platiknemiceras bassei BATALLER 1954, is redescribed. A re-examination of the relationships between Knemiceras gracile and other members of the genus Platiknemiceras strongly suggests that this latter genus is polyphyletic. Keywords Albian, Ammonites, Engonoceratoidea, Platiknemiceras, Parengonoceras, Knemiceras, Egypt, Spain, Tethys. I. INTRODUCTION for which their taxonomic positions are discussed below. Many ammonites with compressed whorl section and Knemiceras gracile DOUVILLÉ, 1916 was described from reduced ornament, have been subsequently attributed to the Albian of the Maghara area, north Sinai, Egypt from this morphological genus, including: Platiknemiceras a single specimen.
