MY MICHAEL HEVERIN Killenaule won'l want to lose the fmal after putting so much effort into their two games against Mullinahone in the semi-final Those two games, plus the earlier first round game agamst lasl year's Intermediate Champions. could be crucial in KiUeoaule's bid to retain their litle. The dlampons stormed through the losers group after the first rotrd shock at the hands of Mullmahone in Cloneen and then after coming close to defeat again In the seml-Irnal. they responded in the best possible fashion In the replay to win comfortably. That match practice could be the difference between the sides. Killenaule have had five games to dale to Ballingarry's two and in neither game were Ballingarry overly impressive, Ballingarry will be looking to Blondie Ivors and Don Lyons in their bid for their fourth tiUe but the experience of players such as Davy Hearne, Donie O'Connell. Michael Brennan and Joe O'Dwyer may just swing it for KIUenaule and see them to their sixteenth title.

BY JOHN GUITON

When asked to pen a few lines for this programme on the atmosphere surrounding Killenaule-Ballingarry rivalry my mind wandered back toa personal experience of the vigour and unmitigated paSSion of contests betweeen these two great clubs_ I hasten to add that I never had the pleasure of being what you would call a good nurler, never mind playing in a South Senior hurling fmal, so my lillie piece of reminiscence conerns that of a humble under-age participant in the Killenaule colours. The precise year escapes me, but it was either 76 or '77 and we were lacing Ballingarry In a round of the South minor championship, in Fethard. It sticks in my mind for a variety of reasons. not least the fact that it poured cats and dogs for most of the hour, and I was marking Michael Sparrow and got the proverbial hurling lesson from the then left-half-back, with whom I later became quite friendly as we worked within yards of each other. Indeed, I wish him well today in his quest lor a Mid-Senior medal with Thursles Sarslields My most vivid memory of that game, however, was not that we lost by a lew pOints but the sheer tenacity and legitimate phYSical force of the contest You were either in It or you were notl I was notl It had everything you could think of, savoury and unsavoury, and I can tell you if we had physios at that time they would have been working overtimel Some of the modern sportswriters would probably have described it as sheer tribalism. And, sure, they would be close to the markl Yet, when it was all over, it wasall over, tike many a contest before it, and after iI, and If the rivalry became over-intense it was always put down by either side as an integral part of the special atmosphere that prevails between two neighbouring clubs who know each other sowell As we face into tOOay's final the enthusiasm is every bit as infectious in both parishes as in the past. and stilt whatever happens on the field of play there is an almost tangible healthy respect between the clubs You will find players and oHicials mingling freely , in a SOCial capacity wherever they meet, whether il be in Killenaule or Ballingarry, a situation that IS unlikely to ever change regardless 01 the heavy banter that may go on. I! musl not be forgotten that they bring a huge appeal to hurling in the division too, and ample proof of that was seen in the record gale receipts of the South Board when the learns last met in the '87 final. Today could see Iherecord broken.

, Rualn Walsh, Tlpp FM Radio . .. " , 11.. The clash of Killenaule and Balllngarry in thiS year's South Senior Hurling fina l IS eagerly awaited, not only In Ihese two neighbouring panshes. but also by hurling followers throughout the South DiVision. Because they are neighbouring parishes, the stakes will be high with rivalry pride and honour to the lore. II is hard to predict an outcome to this final. Killenaule, the defending South Champions, were slow to get off the mark in this year's championshi" having been beaten by Mullinahone in the opening round, and then having to come through the Losers group. They were not their usual impressive selves in the drawn semi-final against Mullinahone, hitting a total of 17 wides. However, Killenaule showed a vast improvement for the replay and the result was never really in doubt from half time onwards. They will be looking to players like Donie O'Connell, Michael Brennan, the Shelleys, Paul and Tony andtheO'Dwyers, Joe and John to once again play like men inspired. For Ballingarry, this South final will be a big fe .. !. Under the guidance of former county great, Thea English, they certainly have served a line brand of hurling in thiS year's championship. Some will argue that the men from Ballingarry were lucky to beat Carrick Swan in the semi-final, literally snatching victory form the jaws of defeat. That win proves two things, this BaUingarryteam do nogiveup until the final whistle, and Ihatlhey do not lack the fitness tohurl forthefull hour. They Will be hoping that on the day players like Don Lyons, Seamus Doheny, the Ivors "Blondie" and Shane, and the Shelleys, Dan and Kevin, can play to expectations. Maybe because 01 their display In !nat marvellOUS Seml-llnal against Swan, Ballingarry will start loday's final as slight favourites, but then again Killenaule may have the edge in terms of experience. One word 01 caution to both learns, 1992 has proven to be the year 01 the beaten favourifesand theyearol the beaten defending champions. II all makes for a very intereSllng game of championship hurling. THE BOYS IN BLACK AND RED

J. Through lonely Allen bog, I heard the lark above, from Ballinure to Knockavardagh call, And the thrush and blackbirds thrill, Ballintogher and Springhill, It's SO lovely round the hills of Killenaule, Alone rules o\'er aU, The Mullinahone in song did recall, It's nice in Drangan and Cloneen, St. Johnstown and Famaleen, But it's lovely round the hills of Killenaule.

2. On the lonely Dunguib road, I heard a banjo play The melody sent magic through my soul, And I heard a love-song rare, Fill the rich Rathrnoley air, It's so lovely round the hills of IGllenauie, Alone Slievenamon rules over all, Whose valleys Ballingarry enthrall. It's nice in Fethard and Moyglass. And Coolmore of green-blue grass, But it's lovely round the hills of Killenaule.

3. On Ballynonty's slopes, I heard the pheasant call, In Lanespark, the hare bounds best of all, And through Cooldine's lowly gorse, Ran the foxhound, and the horse, It's so lovely round the hills of Killenaule, Alone over all rules Slievenamon, From Killusty to Derr)rnaflan, It's nice in Graigue, , Glengoole and Ballysloe, But it's lovely round the hills of Killenaule.

This song has, by now, been heard in all comers of Ireland and, indeed, in many countries abroad. It was written by Davy Connack and liam O'Donnell and has been recorded by John O'Connell, Louise Morrissey, Mick Flavin and lillm O'Donnell. ACTION FROM THE SEMI-FINALS ~~

Aldan Bradshaw, Hurling Runsl. The appearance in Cion mel ,odayof Ballyneale Under21 hurlers in the B final isa historic day for the Club as this is the firsllime in the club's history that a team from the Parish of Bal 'yneale and Grangemockler has made it to this stage althe championship. Indeed 8allyneate have never won a championship in Minor or Under 21 grades as a club on its own. Until recent years, Iheclubwasoften unableto field a team on its own in the grades. However, in 1985 Baltyneale combined with Moyle Rovers as Slievenamon to Win a great victory over Fethard in the Minor B final. Since then success has been scarce for Ballyneale hurting atany level but 1987 was a famous year for the club when South Junior title came to the Parish, after a long wait, bei ng the club's first si nce 1948. In 1990 the junior hurlers again reached the South final, only to be narrowly beaten in the decider. So wi n, lose or draw today, the club is proud of the players who have played so whole-heartedly th roughout the championship to reach this decider. In the first round they ousted one of the favourites, Carrick Davins by a couple of points. In the quarter-final /Castlegrace were eventually overcome in a dour game. The team upped their performance a great deal for the semi·final in which they defeated a highly fancied Kilsheelan. Preparations since have gone quite well for today's game. Hopefully, the team will deliver another whole hearted display today. Finally, the whole team will no doubt miss the services of Tony Lanigan, who played a significant part in the team to date. Tony, will no doubt be wishing he could be here from far New Zealand.

. South Under 21 Hurling Final 1984 Ballybacon/Cahir 1-8; Carrick Swans 1-5 The Nationalist reports: The &tlybacon/Cahir combination won U1C South under 21 hurling title by defeating the holders and favourites, Swan in a tremendous final on 2nd December. From the start evcry boll was contested with almost fanatical determination by the players on both sides and the hccti<' pace was maintained all through, an hour that provided high excitement and plenty of entcrWinment for all present. Whilst the Swans were strong pre-match favourites, Ballybacon/cahir tore into the fray from the throw-in and never let up. They put the classier Carrick men completely orr their game and Iheirdirect rirst-timc tactics fashioned a well deserved success. R. Quirke, G. Walsh, Jim and Dan Casey, Scan O·Gomwn. S. Quirkt'. Grant me, 0 Lord, a hurler's skill, With strength ofarm and speed oflimb, Unerring eye for the flying ball And courage to match them what'er befall. May my aim be steady, my stroke be true, My actions manly, my misses few; And no matter what way the game may go, May I rest infriendship with every foe. When the final whistle for me is blown, And I stand at last at God's judgement throne, May the Great Referee when He calls my name, Say "you hurled like a man, you played the game".
